Donia R. Coots, 85, of Shelbyville

Donia R. Coots, 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday January 27, 2022 at

her residence.

 

Born June 6, 1936 in Leitchfield, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Roy Cockriel

and Bessie (Hayes) Cockriel.  She married Herbert D. Coots on February 26, 1966

and he survives.

 

Other survivors include a daughter Sandy Johnson of St. Paul; a brother Edward Cockriel (wife Tina) of Leitchfield; a sister Kathern Hazelwood of Louisville; 3 grandchildren- Michael

Gibson (wife Lacy), Kelly Shine (husband Chris), Dr. Chasity Stahl (husband Josh); and 6 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Thomas Cockriel, sisters- Frankie Meredith, Shirley Milliner, and Lizzie Mae Brooks.

 

Mrs. Coots had lived in this area since 1959, after moving from Kentucky.  She had been a factory worker at the Garment Factory, worked 14 years at the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Shelbyville, KCL Corp. for 14 years, and managed Colonial Laundry for several  years.  

 

She was a member of the Waldron  Baptist Church.

 

Donia enjoyed shopping, coffee and diet Coke, and spending time with her grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Friday, February 4, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral  Home, 437 Amos Road, with Pastor Kim Jarrett officiating.   

 

Burial will be in Miller Cemetery. 

 

Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday evening, February 3, 2022 at the funeral home.

Joseph E. Buening, 84, of St. Paul

Joseph E. Buening, 84, of St. Paul,  passed away  January 29, 2022 at Our Hospice facility in Columbus.

 

Born July 9, 1937, in Letts, IN, he was the son of George Buening and 

Helen (Roell) Buening..  He married JoAnn (Colson) Buening on April 22, 1958 and she survives. 

Other survivors include 9 children: Juanita "Dee" Ann  Rogers (Keith) of St. Paul; Rebecca Buening of Indianapolis; Janice Buening of Indianapolis; Tim Buening of St. Paul;  Mary Linville (Dan) of Morristown; Helen Ramsey (Mike) of St. Paul; Patricia Stevens of Waldron; George Buening (Rebecca) of Indianapolis;  and Kathleen McGuire (Ed) of Indianapolis. He is also survived by 6 siblings : Mildred Busch of Greensburg; Philip Buening of Greensburg; Robert Buening of Indianapolis; 

Ruth Buening of Indianapolis; John Buening of Shelbyville; and Jerome Buening of St. Paul. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Alvin, Don, and Raymond Buening. 

 

Mr. Buening was a lifelong resident of this area. He was an engineer at Rogers Engineering of Cambridge City for 22 years and GE/Wellman for 36 years. He graduated from St. Francis Seminary High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church. 

 

Joe loved to travel and cruise with large groups of family and friends. He enjoyed large family get- togethers at his house. All his children and grandchildren played sports, and he and JoAnn followed them all.  He had fond memories of camping, and he loved playing dominoes. 

 

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 2:00 PM at St. Vincent Catholic Church, with Rev. Mike Keucher officiating. 

 

Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery.

 

Friends may call on Friday evening, February 4, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, from 4:00pm until 8:00 pm.  Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm at the funeral home.

Dorothy Morton, 93, of Fairland

Dorothy Morton, 93, of Fairland, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.

She was born October 30, 1928, in Allais, Perry County, Kentucky, the daughter of George and Leaner (Combs) White. Dorothy married Noah Morton, and he preceded her in death on September 1, 1986.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Fannie Brown and husband, Randy, of Fairland, Roy Morton of Fairland, Rachel Poling and husband, Rick, of New Palestine, Edith Taylor and husband, Gaylon, of Fairland, Fay Soard and husband, Mitch, of Fairland, Linda Rinker and husband, Greg, of Southport, and Lisa Wynn and husband, Tim, of Fairland; sister, Delphie Howard of North Vernon; grandchildren, Nada Morton Lawburg, Scotty Morton, Melissa Taylor and husband, Martin, Shane Williams and wife, Brittany, Ricky Morton and wife, Sara, Darrel Morton, Timothy Morton and wife, Allison, Christopher Rinker and Aaron Rinker; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to Noah, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Tommy Morton, Norman Morton, Ray Morton and Randy Morton; and siblings, Ettie Ivey, Cappie Gilbert, Ernest White, Ella Jane White, Jerry White, Bethany Wright and Troy White.

Dorothy was a member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing and was a prayer warrior.

She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed canning, after breaking beans with her friends and family. Dorothy could whip up a meal for 20 or more people, in no time.

Dorothy also enjoyed quilting.

Watching the birds at the bird feeder in her front yard gave her great joy.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the funeral home.

Interment will be at New Palestine Cemetery in New Palestine.

Diana Sue Hansen-Brattain, 70, of St. Paul

Diana Sue Hansen-Brattain, 70, of St. Paul, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at her residence.

 

Born July 4, 1951 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Jerry Brattain and Gelena (Guyne) Brattain.  She  married Don Hansen on August 19, 1978 and he passed away in 2003.

 

Survivors include 2 sons- Don "DC" Hansen (wife Nicole), Anthony Hansen (wife Kelli); a brother Fred Brattain  (wife Cyni), 2 sisters- Theresa Shutters, Marana Adams (husband Kyle); 5 grandchildren- Kaylee Hansen, Elizabeth Hansen, Samuel Hansen, Benjamin Hansen, Andrew Hansen; and many loved nieces and nephews, and  grand nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and her spouse.

 

Mrs. Hansen-Brattain was a lifelong resident of this area, and graduated from North Decatur High School in 1969.

 

She was a master chef for many years and also taught culinary arts in Bartholomew County Schools for 15 years.

 

She was past president of American Culinary Federation, Indianapolis Chapter, and also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years.

 

Diana enjoyed traveling, cruising, cooking, and spending time with her family.

 

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home 437 Amos Road, with Pastor George Mitchell officiating. 

 

Burial will be in Paul Hill Cemetery. 

 

Friends may call on Saturday morning from 12:00 noon until the time of the service.

Michael W. Yates, 66, of Shelbyville

Michael W. Yates, 66, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 at his residence.

 

He was born September 30, 1955 in Indianapolis to George E. Yates and Leerie (Smith) Yates.

 

Mike was employed at Delta Faucet in Greensburg for 25 years.  He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings.  He enjoyed wood working, watching NASCAR, and playing bingo.  His greatest pride were his grandchildren.  Mike was always willing to give a free helping hand to anyone in need.

 

He married Diana Simmonds on October 16, 1976, and she survives. He is also survived by his sons Cory (Jenna) Yates of IL; and Branden Yates of Shelbyville, his grandchildren, Lauren and Ethan; his brothers, Richard Yates, of Greencastle, and George Yates of Great Falls, MT; several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Judith Ann Yates, and Patricia Feney.

 

A celebration of life ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.

Peggy Jean (Dixon) Price, 88, Greenfield

Peggy Jean (Dixon) Price, 88, Greenfield, passed away on January 19, 2022, at Bloom at German Church, in Indianapolis.

 

She was born on July 30, 1933, in Stearns, KY.

Peggy is survived by her children: Joe Hardin, Sheree (Doug) Kirkhoff, Steve (Barb) Price, and Jeff (Meg) Price; grandchildren: Dawn Lester, Joey Hardin, Cory Price, and Zachary Brundage; and great-grandchildren: Kyle Wilson and Kaimon Johnson.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Orville Gene Price.

Maurice "Mo" James Whittemore Jr

Maurice "Mo" James Whittemore Jr. passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022.

 

He was born September 1, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia to Maurice James Whittemore Sr. and Ladislaw Dawidowich.

Mo is survived by his four children Roberta "Bobbi" L. Whittemore, Maurice J. Whittemore III, David A. Whittemore, Mark L. Whittemore, and six grandchildren and, his brothers John, Tom, Jim and, sister Grace Davis.

Mo was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elizabeth "Betty" Whittemore, his parents, and brothers Paul and David.

Mo was an electrical engineering Purdue University Graduate (1956). Mo & Betty met on campus. They married and lived in Indianapolis, Rushville, and Kokomo before moving to New Palestine in 1969.

 

Mo opened the family business, 700 West Recording studio, at their home which has become a part of central Indiana music history – 700West.com. Mo was a musician, composer, recording engineer, inventor, free-flight airplane builder and competitor, he had an interest in the Brandywine Wind Ensemble, he built furniture, instruments, audio speakers & equipment, was a champion muzzle loader.

 

At the age of 72, Mo received his master's degree in music composition from Butler University with his family & grandchildren in the audience cheering him on. His compositions were part of performance programs of the Indianapolis Symphony, the Allentown Band out of Pennsylvania, the Brandywine Wind Ensemble, New Palestine marching band & competition pieces, and used in several national marketing ad campaigns e.g., Vans shoes.

Respect & care of Mo & Betty's loved ones during COVID-19 is paramount. The visitations and funeral honoring both Mo and Betty will be brief, masks are required, and a live-stream will be available for those wishing to participate virtually.

 

Services will be Thursday, January 27, 2022, at 1pm with visitation from 12pm till time of service at Stillinger Family Funeral Service Hendryx Chapel, New Palestine,19 East Main St, New Palestine IN 46163.

 

Burial at New Palestine Cemetery will follow services.

Wanda G. Sheets, 53, of Shelbyville

Wanda G. Sheets, 53, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, January 21, 2022
at MHP Medical Center.


Born September 22, 1968 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Joe Johnson and 
Rena Hall.  She married Harley Sheets on February 7, 1986 and he survives.

 

Other survivors include her mother in law  and father in law Evelina and George Sheets of Shelbyville;  3 children- Stephanie Hatfield (husband Zachary) of Shelbyville, Heather Sheets (Blake Roberts) of Franklin, Brandon Sheets (wife Austin) of Indianapolis; several brothers and sisters including Carol Hall (Doug Merrill) of Homer; 5 grandchildren- Landon, Aiden, Zaelynn, Zoey, and Avery.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Mrs. Sheets was a lifelong resident of this area, and was a home maker.  She attended Shelbyville High School and became a member of the Waldron Baptist Church in October of 1997.

 

Wanda enjoyed camping, boating, vacationing, and playing minature golf.  She loved her family, her pets, and being involved in any family functions or activities.

 

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Friday, January 28, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Rev. David Humphrey officiating. 

 

Burial will be in Miller Cemetery.

Michael Wayne Wampler, 64, of Shelbyville

Michael Wayne Wampler, 64, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at St. Vincent Hospital.

 

He was born July 19, 1957 in Benham, KY to George Wampler and Geneva (Ward) Wampler.

 

Mike met the love of his life, Kathleen ‘Kathy’ (Walburn) Wampler when she was 15 years old and he was 16 years old.  They married on June 16, 1979 and spent 42 wonderful years as husband and wife.

 

Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy, his son, Kyle Wampler (Sabrina) and daughter, Kristin Mohr (Joseph) all of Shelbyville, his grandchildren, Taylor, Carly, Garrett, Brady, and Harper, and his brother, Randy Wampler (Sylvia) of Franklin.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Mike was a 1975 graduate of Triton Central High School.

 

He was the plant manager and a production supervisor for Pureflowairdog/Diesel RX.

 

Mike was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  He loved to fish.  His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

 

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m, Thursday, January 27, 2022 and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, January 28, 2022, at First Church of the Nazarene, 2315 S. Riley Hwy, Shelbyville, IN.

 

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, January 28, 2022 at the church with Dr. Stephen Bohall officiating.

 

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Richard Allen "Fuz" Huber, 82, of Manilla

Richard Allen "Fuz" Huber, 82, of Manilla, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.

He was born April 14, 1939, in Indianapolis, the son of Harold Huber and Virginia (Clifton) Stewart.

Richard is survived by his sons, Grant Huber of Fairland, and Michael Huber and wife, Beth, of Laurel; daughter, Kira Huber of Hitchcock, Texas; brother, John Stewart and wife, Judy, of Indianapolis; sisters, Kathleen Vahle and husband, Ron, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Edellen Winbun and husband, Dick, of Lafayette; grandchildren, Tyler Hepfer, Branson Huber and Sutton Huber; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard retired from IBEW Local No. 481, in 2000.

He was a member of FLE Brothers.

Richard enjoyed pestering people, being loud, working on projects and going to auctions.

He loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Most of all, he was the kind of Daddy and Papaw that loved and supported his kiddos and grandchildren no matter what. He was always the family's center and will be remembered for his undying dedication to his family and friends.

A gathering of friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Portia Anne Powers, 74, of Greensburg

Portia Anne Powers, 74, of Greensburg, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg.

She was born June 14, 1947, in Gridley, California, the daughter of J. R. and Mary J. (Longacre) Whitten. On June 30, 1997, she married Steven D. Powers, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2015. Portia is survived by her twin sons, Thomas W. Tucker and Wayne Jerry Tucker and wife, Sharon, both of Greensburg; daughter, Mary Ann McCarty and husband, Mike, of Roseville, California; companion and soul mate, Richard Crosby of Shelbyville; step-daughter (who was like a daughter to her), Peggy Sue Garwood and husband, Jeff, of Circleville, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Steven, Portia was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and one sister.

Portia graduated from Rio Linda High School, and received her nursing degree from Long Beach City College.

She was a nurse at Major Hospital in Shelbyville for 10 years, retiring in 1997. Portia loved working with patients.

Portia was a member of Star Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Portia’s Life will be held at a later date.

Wilma Louise Zike, 92, of Morristown

Wilma Louise Zike, 92, of Morristown, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Morristown Manor in Morristown.

She was born May 2, 1929, in Shelby County, the daughter of Harold and Mabel (Gould) Valentine. On December 25, 1950, she married Joed Zike, and he preceded her in death on October 19, 1990.

Wilma is survived by her son, Kevin Zike and wife, Rhonda, of Morristown; sisters, Doris Valentine and Rose Ann Valentine, both of Wanamaker; brother, Lloyd Valentine and wife, Susan, of Pleasant View; grandchildren, Jessie Zike Everhart and husband, Brandon, Stephanie Zike Everhart and husband, Jonathan, Jarrett Zike, Katon Zike and husband, Michael Preuschl, and Steven Zike and wife, Kaela; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Joed, Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steve J. Zike; sister, Luella “Chic” Yoder; brother, Max Valentine; and great-grandson, Abe Everhart.

Wilma graduated in 1947 from Moral Township High School and attended Indiana Business College.

She was a member of the Morristown United Methodist Church, where she was active in Feed My Lambs, a food bagging project for school children in need.

Wilma was a homemaker and helped on the family dairy farm, Zike Jersey Farm. She had formerly worked at International Harvester.

She was also a member of the Morristown Red Hat Society and participated at the Morristown Senior Center.

Wilma loved to shop. Carrying on the family Christmas tradition of having oyster stew and chili for Christmas Eve was very important to her.

She enjoyed embroidering.

Visitation will be from 10 to Noon on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.

Funeral services will be Noon on Saturday at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Hanover Cemetery in Shelby County.

Russell "Russ" William  Arbuckle, 71

Russell "Russ" William  Arbuckle, 71, passed away on January 20,2022 at his home near St. Paul, Indiana with his loving family alongside.

 

Russ was born on February 28, 1950 in Bethesda,  Maryland to Virginia DeVern (Bissett) Arbuckle and Charles William Arbuckle.  He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1968 and went on to travel the world as a Mechanical Engineer in

the automotive industry.  He was known for saying that no matter where he went in the world, all anyone that he met ever wanted was for their kids to have a better life than they had. He succeeded in making that come true for his own family. 

 

Russ is survived by his wife, Susan (Humpert) Arbuckle; his daughter Alexandria

Arbuckle; his son Charles Neal Arbuckle; and several grand-pets.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law Mark Humpert.

 

Russ's greatest joy came from spending time with his family.  He enjoyed being outdoors

and with his animals, working with his hands, figuring out how new machines worked, 

taking trips and watching movies with his family.  He was quick with a smile and had a 

generous heart.  He will be deeply missed by his loved ones.

 

Funeral services will be 6:00 pm on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Glenn E. George

Funeral Home, 106 E. Franklin St, St. Paul, with visitation there from 4:00 pm until

Nazario R. Guzman, 89, Greenfield

Nazario R. Guzman, 89, Greenfield, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at his residence. He was born on July 28, 1932, in Doctor Arroyo, Mexico to Anastacio and Atanacia (Rodriguez) Guzman.

He married his love Francisca Barcenas and together they started their family. Nazario was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He worked at Ed Martin Automotive in Indianapolis as a detailer for many years. In his spare time, he loved to mow grass, grill out, and travel back and forth to visit family members in Texas. But above all, Nazario cherished his time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Nazario is survived by his loving wife Francisca Guzman; their children: Nazario Guzman, Jr., Ric Guzman, Vince Guzman, Monica Guzman, Victor Guzman, Alex (Christine) Guzman, and Elizabeth Guzman; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and siblings, Juan (Juanita) Guzman and Rafaela Guzman Villescas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and great-granddaughter, Carmen Ellis.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, IN.

Heather Nicole McKinney, 22, of Homer

Heather Nicole McKinney, 22, of Homer, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2022.

 

She was born January 19, 1999 in Virginia Beach, VA to Jeremiah McKinney, Sr. and Melissa (Moore) McKinney.

 

Heather’s life revolved around her children.  She was a great Mom and her greatest joy was spending time with and taking care of her babies.  She had a passion for art and photography and also a love for music.

 

Heather is survived by her parents, her daughter, Penelope Nicole, her son, Kingston Cole, her daughter, Estelle Ann, her fiancé, Matt Grider, her sisters, Rachel, Ariel, and Rebecca, her brothers, Jeremiah, Jr., and Edward, several nieces and nephews, her maternal grandparents, James and Cathy Moore, and Karen Moore, and her paternal grandmother, Susan McKinney, her future mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kimberly Wagner and Jard Grider.

 

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Vernon McKinney and paternal grandmother, Teresa Qualls.

 

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, January 21, 2022 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

 

Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. with her grandmother, Susan McKinney officiating.

Deborah L. Evans, 68, of Greenwood, formerly of Shelbyville

Deborah L. Evans, 68, of Greenwood, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Community Hospital South.

 

She was born July 17, 1953 in Shelbyville to Herschel Evans and Melvena (Lay) Evans.

  

Debbie worked in the bakery and deli at Kroger.  She was a member of Village Bible Church in Greenwood and a member of a crocheting club associated with the church.

 

She enjoyed puzzles, puzzle books, and ceramic painting.  Debbie also loved to bowl.  She will be greatly missed by her family and church family that she loved very much.

 

Debbie is survived by her brother, Michael (Alicia) Vermillion, her nieces, Ashley Tibbs, Leanna Teney, and Mahri Vermillion, her nephews, Tyler Vermillion, and Joshua Vermillion, 2 great-nephews, and 3 great-nieces.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

 

Funeral services will follow at Noon at the funeral home with Reverend Ken Dalton officiating.

Joy I. Ernstes, 92, of Shelbyville

Joy I. Ernstes, 92, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.

She was born August 9, 1929, in Clarksville, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Alice (Jessup) Price. On September 23, 1950, she married Alfred Ernstes, and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1995.

Joy is survived by her daughters, Barbara Dalton and husband, Bart, of Lakewood, Washington, Alyce Gobel and husband, Mike, and Lydia Phillips, both of Shelbyville, Joyce Hatton and husband, Aaron, of Greensburg; daughter-in-law, Theresa Ernstes of Shelbyville; grandchildren, B. D. Dalton and wife, Michelle, Breanna Giove and husband, Joe, Dallas Phillips and wife, Heather, Trey Ernstes and wife, Jennifer, Jaron Hatton and wife, Sarah and Jennica Heckler and husband, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Max Dalton, Talia Dalton, Dalton Giove, Izzabella Giove, Spencer Phillips, Braeden Phillips, Jordyn Lynnae Ernstes, Ruby Elizabeth Heckler and Dylan Benjamin Heckler; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

In addition to Alfred, Joy was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ben Ernstes Jr.; granddaughter, Katie Ernstes; son-in-law, Rick Phillips; sisters, Virginia Warfield and Juanita Shanholtz; and brother, Francis Price.

Joy graduated in 1947 from Shelbyville High School.

She was an active member of Evangelical United Church of Christ.

Joy formerly worked as a nurses aide at Heritage House Convalescent Center from 1976 until retiring in 1994. She enjoyed volunteering at the Hospice of Shelby County Thrift Shop.

She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, painting, reading and making cards for the church card ministry.

The biggest joy in her life was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the Evangelical United Church of Christ, 2630 S. Miller St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.

Funeral services will be at Noon on Saturday at the church, with Rev. Charles Jordan officiating.

Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Charles Edward Larmore, 61, Greenfield, passed away on January 7, 2022.

 

He was born on September 2, 1960 in Dayton, OH, to Ralph Edward and Shirley Lorraine (Tanner) Larmore.

 

For many years, Charles resided in Virginia.

Survivors include his loving sister, Carolyn Ferrell and loving brother, Alan Larmore.

Elva Marie (Barton) Harris, 80, Greenfield

Elva Marie (Barton) Harris, 80, Greenfield, IN, went to be with our Lord on January 11, 2022.

 

She was born on August 1, 1941, in Lily, KY, to George W. and Rebecca (Elliott) Barton.

She was the wife of Herman Harris. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Greenfield for many years. She worked at Mechanics Laundry as well as the Elks Lodge as kitchen help and as a cook. She retired in 2003. She loved being with her family, traveling, camping, church, and growing flowers.

She leaves behind her children: Herman Russell Harris, David Leon (Christina) Reese, and Dennis Floyd Reese; grandchildren: Ashley M. Harris (Dylan) Routier, Aron M. Harris, Daniel L. (Kelly) Reese, Zachariah N. Reese, Dennis Floyd Reese II, Joshua Adam Reese, and Deeann R. Reese; step-grandchildren: Brittany N. Stanley and Katie E. Stanley; great-grandchildren: Landon, Carson, Keegan, Paisley, Derek, Kyler, and Gavin; nephews: Kenneth George, Timothy, Leonard Earl and Frank Kenneth; niece, Shirley Ann; best friend, Faye Elliott; and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Bertha Hazel, Vernia Alice, and Nellie Effie; brother, Kenneth Earl; nephew Daniel Lee; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth A. Reese; great-granddaughter, Renee; parents; and husband.

Shirley Darlene (Mills) Oleksy, 76, Greenfield

Shirley Darlene (Mills) Oleksy, 76, Greenfield, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022, in Indianapolis with family by her side.

 

She was born on September 4, 1945, to Delbert and Garnet Ruth (Downham) Mills, in Elwood, IN.

Shirley worked as a day care worker for Trusty Cook in Indianapolis for many years. Following her day care days, she enjoyed being a homemaker. Shirley attended Greenfield First Church of the Nazarene as well as Bethel Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and making ceramics. But, above all, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her loving children, Patricia Gosser and Stephanie (Bill) Banta; daughter-in-law, Robin Oleksy; 6 grandchildren: William A. (Brianna) Banta, Cole Oleksy, Tyler J. Oleksy, Emily R. Oleksy, Angela R. (Jon) Sears, and Whitney L. (Chris) Clinton; 6 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Teresa McDuffee, Mary Haygood, and Betty Savage.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Oleksy, Jr.; son, James “Jay” Oleksy; great-grandson, Brandon Sears; and second husband by faith, James L. Stone, Sr.

Darin Lee Brokering 56, of Flatrock

Darin Lee Brokering 56, of Flatrock, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at his residence.

 

He was born January 25, 1965 in Shelbyville to Max Brokering and Nancy (Stout) Richards.

 

Darin served in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years before receiving an honorable and medical discharge.    He was a member of the NRA.  Some of his favorite times were spent outdoors, whether it be hunting and fishing, or just out back cooking with his dogs.

 

Darin is survived by his daughter, Nicole Brokering, his son, Mathew Brokering, his grandson, Branden Coleman, his granddaughter, Kenzlee Brokering, his brother, Scott (Tanya) Brokering, and his sister, Melissa (Herb) DeSpain.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, and his brother, Warren Brokering.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing guitar, camping, playing cards, and listening to audio books.

 

Gene had a big heart and loved to care for his wife.

Jeremy Bellows, 40, of Waldron

Jeremy Bellows, 40, of Waldron, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at IU Health University Hospital.

 

He was born August 21, 1981 in Montgomery Co, TX to Robert D. Bellows and Christine Lovitt. 

 

Jeremy graduated from Waldron High School in 2000.  He was a jack of all trades, especially with construction work.  He was very adventurous and loved being outdoors camping, fishing, cliff jumping and tubing.  Jeremy enjoyed going to his kids sporting events and playing video games.  His favorite times were spent with his family and kids.

 

He is survived by his wife, Brittny, his daughter, Madison Bellows, his son, Grayson Bellows, his brother, Jonathon Bellows, his sister, Jennifer Bellows, his aunt, Tammy (Dale) Burton, his best friends, Andrew Smith, Alicia Euell, and Jeremiah Kellems, his mother-in-law, Annette Carew (Paul Sandefur), his brothers-in-law, Cody Sandefur, and Justin Carew, his grandma, Shirley Carew, his aunt and uncle, Beth and Tim Crouch, several cousins, nieces, and nephews, and his beloved dogs, Brody, and Xander.

Martha J. Alley, 90, of Fairland

Martha J. Alley, 90, of Fairland, passed away Monday, January 10, 2022 at her residence.   

  She was born December 6, 1931 in Indianapolis to Val T. Bunch and Virginia (Tooley) Bunch.

 She had lived in Shelby County since 1956.

  Martha graduated from George Washington High School in Indianapolis.  She attended Butler University for 1 year, taking music courses at the Jordan Conservatory of Music. 

 She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Greenfield. She formerly attended Shelbyville Baptist Temple where she was the pianist for over 45 years.

  Martha taught music and kindergarten at Fairland Baptist Church and Shelbyville Baptist Academy.

  In addition to playing at weddings and funerals she provided private piano lessons.

  Her musical talent brought comfort and joy to many people through the years. 

She enjoyed spending time with family and hobbies included sewing and reading.

  On July 1, 1956 she married John Alley, Jr. and they enjoyed 64 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on October 22, 2020.

  Martha is survived by her son, Daniel (Nina) Alley of Greenwood;  daughter, Valerie (Rob) Prather of Fairland; son, Joseph Alley of Darwin, Australia;  grandchildren, Rachel Huffman, Rebecca Downing, Christopher Alley, Megan Monnier, Emily Alley, Andrew Alley, Gabriel Alley, Loreena Alley, and Virginia Alley; and her great-grandchildren, Avery, Aidan, Alec, Asa, Amelia,

 Theodore John, and Harrison.

 She was also preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers. She is survived by 1 sister, Ruth Taylor (Gene) of Fairland.

 Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, January 17, 2022 at Hope’s Point Church, 1703 S. Miller Avenue, Shelbyville, IN. and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the church.

Anita Louise "Skeet" Landwerlen, 78, of Shelbyville

Anita Louise “Skeet” Landwerlen, 78, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at her home.

She was born June 29, 1943, in St. Paul, Decatur County, the daughter of Bernard and Evelyn Louise (Simpson) Cole. In January of 1968, she married George R. Landwerlen, and he preceded her in death on June 10, 1993.

Anita is survived by her brother, John Wayne Cole of Shelbyville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to George, Anita was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert “Bob” Cole, Charles Cole and Bernard Cole Jr.; and a sister, Donna Montgomery.

Anita was a member of Crossroads Community Church.

She formerly worked at Williams Industries, retiring in 1995.

Anita was an avid softball player.

Charline Mae Rehme Wicker, 89, of Huntington, formerly of Shelby County, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Huntington.

She was born January 8, 1933, in Delaware County, the daughter of Harold Grant and Mary Esther (Himelick) Rehme. On July 31, 1955, she married Bill J. Wicker, and he preceded her in death on November 9, 1988.

Charline is survived by her daughters, Catherine Elaine Reese and husband, Jon, of Peru, and Patricia Ann Gilson and husband, Ronald, of Andrews; son, David Wayne Wicker and wife, Karen, of Shelbyville; sister, Phyllis Irwin of Decatur; brother, Robert Rehme of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Brandon Reese, Carrie Cox, Logan Reese, Wayne Wicker, Sarah Hanes, Larry Wicker, Carson Reese and Brittany Wicker; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Bill, Charline was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Donald Eugene Wicker and Michael Allen Wicker; and sister, Christine Kimbrell.

Charline graduated in 1951 from Gaston High School, she received her bachelors degree in education from Ball State University in 1955.

She attended New Hope United Brethren Church.

Charline was an elementary school teacher.

She enjoyed sewing and researching genealogy.

Marilyn J. Lancaster, 83, of Fairland, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at Heritage House of Shelbyville.

She was born October 28, 1938, in Adams, the daughter of Robert and Vera Ruth (Ropp) Bennett. On November 6, 1960, she married Earl W. Lancaster, and he preceded her in death on July 18, 2012.

Marilyn is survived by her sons, Scott Alan Lancaster and wife, Heather, of Shelbyville, and Mark Wayne Lancaster of Fairland; sisters, Charlotte L. Hensley and Carol S. Fowler, both of Shelbyville, and Marsha James and husband, Jack, of Rushville; grandchildren, Jessica Six and husband, Charlie, and Cody Wayman and wife, Jessica; great-grandchildren, Journey Wayman, Charlee Wayman and Gunner Wayman; sister-in-law, Bobbi Bennett of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Earl, Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alan Bennett and Jerry Bennett; and brothers-in-law, Steve Fowler and Bill Hensley.

Marilyn was a lifelong Shelby County resident.

She was a member of Town and Country Christian Church.

Marilyn formerly worked at KCL, in 1983 she began working at Freudenburg NOK, retiring in 2002. She enjoyed going to craft shows with her sisters/best friends. Marilyn also enjoyed shopping, which included visiting with others.

Marilyn loved to take care of her husband and sons. She was a wonderful cook and her family enjoyed the delicious meals she prepared for them.

She also loved animals, especially her beloved dog, Peewee.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to Noon, Monday, January 17, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Rona Jo Rogers, 50, of Waldron

Rona Jo Rogers, 50, of Waldron, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at

OUR Hospice Inpatient Facility.

 

Born December 17, 1971 in Rockwood Tennessee, she was the daughter of 

William and Barbara (Williams) Taylor.  She married Michael L. Rogers Sr. on 

August 16, 2008 and he survives.

 

Other survivors include 2 sons- Zachery Peters of Shelbyville, Austin Hutton of

Shelbyville; stepson Michael Rogers Jr. (wife Tabby) of Waldron, stepdaughter 

Diana Rogers of Waldron; 1 brother Harold "Doug" Taylor (wife Diane) of Kentucky,

2 sisters- Cozetta Elliott (husband Steve) of Greenwood, Deborah Hensley (husband Don) of Greenwood; 8 grandchildren- Hayden, Alexis, Laynee, Blayne, Alliyah, Julian, Ashton, Braxton; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Ashley Heise, a brother William "Billy" Taylor, and sister Okeema Lee (Taylor).

 

Mrs. Rogers had lived in this area for most of her lifetime, and attended Shelbyville High School.    She was a home maker.

 

Rona enjoyed gardening, crafting, the outdoors, animals, and spending time with her grandkids.

 

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Monday, January 17, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Rev. David Humphrey officiating. 

 

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call on Monday morning, January 17, 2022 from 11:00 am until the time of the service, at the funeral home.

Martha Lou "Marty" Hurst, 95, of St. Paul

Martha Lou "Marty" Hurst, 95, of St. Paul, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Aspen Place In Greensburg. 

 

She was born in St. Paul on September 2, 1926 to Lawrence and Verney (Favor) Wiley.  She graduated from St. Paul High School in 1944.  

 

After high school, Marty worked at Public Service Company in Shelbyville, and later worked at the State Bank of Waldron.

 

She married Donn Hurst on June 26, 1948 and  he preceded her in death in 2017.

 

Marty loved music, and was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and loved to sing at church.  She was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church where she was song leader and choir director for many, many years.  Marty loved her church family, and was also a member of the St. Paul Friend's of Music Club.

 

Marty loved her  family.  She is survived by 2 daughters- Karen Hurst of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Kathleen Morton (husband Raymond) of Greensburg; 

3 grandchildren- Brian Morton of St. Paul, Jill McFarling (husband Bart) of Scottsdale Arizona, and Barry Morton (Wife Jessi) of Katy, Texas. She also has

4 great grandchildren- Sveta Morton, Elliott Morton, Asher Morton, and Lauren McFarling.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 69 years, 

and an infant brother.

 

Services will be 11:00 am on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Glenn E. George Funeral Home, 106 E. Franklin St., St. Paul, with burial in Union Chapel Cemetery.

 

Friends may call on Friday evening, January 14, 2022, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at the funeral home.

Robert L. Boswell, 45, of Shelbyville

Robert L. Boswell, 45, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.

He was born January 14, 1976, in Indianapolis, the son of Thomas and Judy (Bragg) Settles. On August 22, 2009, he married Susan Marie Smith, and she survives.

In addition to Susan, Rob is survived by his parents of Shelbyville; grandmother, Betty Reed of Shelbyville; brothers, William Boswell and significant other, Liana, of Greenwood, and Jacob Settles and wife, Karlie, of Shelbyville; sister, Taylor Short and husband, Adam, of Greenfield; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Tom and Sherry Smith of Shelbyville; sisters-in-law, Shannon Doyle and husband, Tony, and Misty Smith, both of Shelbyville, Melissa Crafton and boyfriend, Brian, of Fairland; special friends, Bill and Terri Brown of Shelbyville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rob was preceded in death by his daughter, Rushelle Renee Boswell on June 13, 2021.

He was a member of the Shelbyville High School Class of 1994.

Rob was a truck driver for JM Allen Trucking, for the last seven years.

He enjoyed going fishing and camping. Rob also enjoyed woodworking and shooting.

Rob also leaves behind his dogs, Missy and Milo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. For protection of others the family requires mask be worn in the building.

Wilma Barrett Padrick, 85, of New Palestine

Wilma Barrett Padrick, 85, of New Palestine, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community.

She was born October 27, 1936, in Shelby County, the daughter of Virgil and Goldie (Hickman) McCalip. On September 26, 1954, she married Charles “Ray” Barrett, and he preceded her in death in October of 1990. She married James D. Padrick on March 22, 1992, and he survives.

In addition to James, Wilma is survived by her son, Brian “Keith” Barrett, of Pleasantview; daughter, Pamela L. Webb and husband, Ralph, of Lawrence; step-children, Timothy Lee Padrick of Indianapolis, and Lea Ann Padrick of Greenwood; sister, Carole Weaver and husband, David, of Carmel; grandchildren, Anna Barrett, William Barrett and wife, Taylor, Adrien Barrett, Ellie Stanoch and Betsy Castro; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to Ray, Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Kenneth McCalip.

Wilma graduated in 1954 from Moral Township High School.

She and her husband, Ray, were dairy farmers in Moral Township for 36 years, until retiring in 1990.

Wilma loved her family and enjoyed creating a warm loving home for them.

Private family graveside services will be conducted at New Palestine Cemetery.

Sharon K. (Bennett) Hamner, 81, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Franklin Meadows in Franklin.

She was born November 5, 1940, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Carl Harold and Helen Irene (Heck) Bennett. On June 17, 1961, she married Larry Allen Hamner, and he preceded her in death on March 8, 2010.

Sharon is survived by her daughter, Laurie A. Woods of Shelbyville; sons, Bret Alan Hamner of Greenfield, and Brad Allen Hamner of Shelbyville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to Larry, Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth Ann Lemen; and granddaughter, Tara Ashton Phares.

Sharon graduated in 1959 from Shelbyville High School.

Connie Jo Smith, age 67, of Anderson, formerly of Greenfield passed away January 4, 2022, at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

 

She was born January 1, 1955, in Greenfield to Thomas E. Lawrence and the late Donna J. Lawrence.


She is survived by her father, Thomas Lawrence of Greenfield; sons, Steve, and Kenneth Woodruff; sisters, Cheryl Nienhaus and Marla Sturm; and several stepbrothers and sisters.

Mark Alan Hewitt, 69, New Palestine

Mark Alan Hewitt, 69, New Palestine, passed away January 3, 2022, at his residence. He was born on October 17, 1952, in Indianapolis to the late Bert and Shirley (Dickie) Hewitt.

 

He was a graduate of Arlington High School in Indianapolis.

Mark was employed as the Vice President of IVC Industrial Coatings for many years before retiring in 2002. He was a former dive master. He enjoyed traveling and waterfront vacations. He loved to work outdoors and around the yard and could often be seen riding in his golf cart and/or on his lawnmower.

He is survived by his loving wife Etta May (Cramer) Hewitt; children: Chris (Kristen) Hewitt, Kim (Channing) Russell, Scott (Jamie) Hewitt, Justin Maley, Jared Maley, and Kendra (David) Stelzel; 12 grandchildren; siblings: Mike (Becky) Hewitt, Linda (Gary) Rishel, and Lisa (Gerry) Pugh; many nieces and nephews; and many former work colleagues and friends.

Visitation will be on Saturday, January 15, 2022, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, with the Celebration of Life Service to immediately follow at 4:00 p.m.

Robert E. "B.B." Bayne 93, former Shelbyville resident

Robert E. "B.B." Bayne 93, former Shelbyville resident, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Community South Hospital.

 

Born August 2, 1928 in Akron Ohio, he was the son of Ramey Edward Bayne and Jessie Vetruse (McClain) Bayne.  He married Ruth (Coffey) Bayne on July 21, 1947 and she preceded him on January 10, 2016.

 

Survivors include 4 sons- David E. Bayne (wife Joyce) of Georgia, Danny L. Bayne of Shelbyville, Donald J. Bayne of California, Dennis E. Bayne (wife Teresa) of Greenwood; 2 sisters- Joy Marie Maltby of Taylorsville, Illinois, Judy VanArsdale of Washington; 7 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers- Donald E. Bayne, James M. Bayne, and a sister- Josephine Bird.

 

Mr. Bayne had lived in this area since 1952, after moving from Illinois.  He was an auto mechanic with Shelbyville Motors for 36 years, Gary Shore Ford for 2 years, and after that had been a cafeteria custodian at Shelbyville High School for a time. 

 

He graduated high school in Mason City, Illinois, attended Hope's Point Baptist Church, was a lifetime member of American Legion, a lifelong member of VFW, a member of the FOP, and AARP.  He was a US Army and a US Navy veteran.

 

B.B. enjoyed riding his motorcycle, camping and traveling, collecting and building electric trains, and working on cars.

 

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Monday, January 10, 2022 with Rev. David Humphrey officiating.

 

Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday morning from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion.

Tony B. Layne, 56, of Waldron, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at Waldron Health and Rehab.

 

He was born October 29, 1965 in Oakland, CA to Larry Layne and Margo (Crandall) Harris.

 

Tony graduated from Livermore High School, CA. in 1983.  Tony loved to play computer games and video games.  He was a bus driver for Modesto, California. 

 

Tony is survived by his sister, Jana (Daniel) Cheek, his nieces, Renee Odum, and Adrianne Stocks, his nephews, Travis Cheek, and Shane Cheek, and niece, Shaunda Goings.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Scott Goings.

Born November 12, 1964 in Shelbyville, he was the son of Charles Newbold

and Evelyn (Runshe) Newbold.  He married Donna (Fleener) Newbold on July

22, 2000 and she survives.

Jessica Davis (husband Adam) of Shelbyville, Jannae Litteral (husband Kevin) of Germany, Jason Kerr (wife Leigh Fall) of Anderson, Caleb Newbold of Waldron; brother- Mike Newbold (wife Beverly) of Missouri; sisters- Susie Nickels (husband Bob) of Shelbyville, Ruth Icenogle (husband Will) of Shelbyville, Pam Smith (husband John) of Waldron, Patty Gross (husband Donnie) of Gas City; and 8 grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Jennifer Elliott-Newbold and 3 grandchildren.

 

Mr. Newbold was a lifelong resident of this area, and graduated from Waldron High School in 1983.

 

He was a stretch press operator at Radius Aerospace (KT Corp.) for 37 years.  He was a member of the Waldron Masonic Lodge and was a US Army veteran.

 

William enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, tinkering in his garage, and was always on the go.  He loved his family and the time he spent with them.

 

Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 3718 E. Blue Ridge Rd., with Pastor Robb Barlow officiating. 

 

Burial will be in Paul Hill Cemetery in St. Paul.

Pamela Diane Davis-Green, 74

Pamela Diane Davis-Green, 74, a life-long resident of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at her residence.

 

She was born July 14, 1947 to Gene Davis and Alice J. (Smith) Davis.

 

Pam graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1966.  She was a former manager at Comfort Inn.

 

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Eastern Star, and Moose Ladies Auxiliary.  Pam loved to write poetry, read and travel.  She was a member of Singing Stars Show Group at Shelbyville High School.  She attended Clown School and was known as “Dazzle”.

 

Pam is survived by her son, Todd E. Green, her granddaughter, Jenna L. Green, her grandson, Ethan E. Green, and her nephews, Ashley M. Davis, and Spencer R. Davis.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Michael E. Davis.

 

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Wray DePrez "Dep" "Digger" Ewing

Wray DePrez “Dep” “Digger” Ewing

DeP was born on February 11, 1943, in Indianapolis to Richard L. Ewing and Patricia DePrez Ewing. He left this earth on January 4, 2022, and is soaring high.

He was married to Debbie (Wells) Ewing in 2001, after eight years of courtship.

He is survived by his wife and sons, Christopher (Emily) Ewing of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Todd Ewing of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Daughters, Jennifer (Chris) Dennis and Andrea (Dean Tucci) Payne. Grandchildren, Danny Ewing and Mary Ewing, Carolina Ewing, Adelyn Primavera, Megan Dennis, Brooke Dennis and Taylor Dennis. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Scheele of Indianapolis.

His parents preceded him in death.

DeP graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1962 and from Miami University in 1966, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Following graduation he went to pilot training school for the US Air Force and served as a Captain in the Vietnam War, where he flew several aircraft including the C-130. He was awarded five air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross award. He was proud to be of service to his country.

Following active duty he served in the Air Force Active Reserves as an A-37 fighter pilot for three years. His plan was to become a commercial pilot, but the airlines weren’t hiring. So with a nudge from his father, he went to Indiana Mortuary School and joined his father’s business, Ewing Mortuary, which he later purchased, and eventually merged with Carmony Funeral Home to become Carmony-Ewing Funeral Home.

DeP enjoyed a full and storied life. He was truly a one-of-a kind guy. In his wake were the many friends he collected along the way. His easy-going personality and ability to connect with people provided him the opportunity to experience many adventures and develop lifelong friendships. His quick wit and sense of humor served him well.

He was always up for anything. He loved sailing, traveling, snow skiing, golfing, riding bicycles, playing tennis, kayaking, and a variety of other activities. Mention doing something with him and he was all in.

He retired in 2008, and enjoyed traveling near and far throughout the world with his wife, Debbie. They spent the winter months in Florida and summers at his cottage in Harbor Springs, Michigan.

Past community involvement includes serving as co-chair of the Scuffy drive, Shelbyville Central Schools board member, Lions Club honorary volunteer, chairing the blood drive for Shelby County, Charter member of Sertoma Club, and served on the boards of the Shelbyville Elks Lodge, Shelby County Arts Council, Shelby County Players, and was on the Forest Hill Cemetery Board for 30 years. DeP and his wife Debbie were member of Wi-Hub Circle.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Rev. Bill Horner officiating.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2022, at Forest Hill Cemetery, 704 Morris Avenue in Shelbyville.

Gary Eugene Oldham, Jr., 30, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022, in Shelby County.

He was born September 17, 1991, in Metairie, Louisiana, the son of Gary Eugene Sr. and Vicki Jean (Lay) Oldham.

Gary is survived by his parents of Shelbyville; fiancée, Stephanie Munger of Shelbyville; maternal grandmother, Deloris Jean Cecil of Shelbyville; maternal step-grandmother, Denise Lay of Norris, Tennessee; sisters, Lydia Oldham and significant other, Randall Hunt, Tara Oldham, and Tiffany Garner and husband, Lee, all of Shelbyville, and Danielle Hufnagel and fiance’, Rob, of Bradenton, Florida; and nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, George H. Lay; maternal step-grandfather, Ray Cecil; and paternal grandfather, Jack Eugene Oldham; and paternal grandmother, Barbara Lorraine Gardner.

Gary graduated in 2011 from Shelbyville High School, and attended Vincennes University for one year.

He worked at Shelby Material, as a loader, at the Beech Grove plant. He had previously worked for eight years for Pierce Tree Trimming Service.

Gary attended Shelbyville Community Church.

He was a member of the Eagles Aerie Lodge No. 766 in Shelbyville.

Gary enjoyed going bowling, and playing softball, golf, soccer and basketball. He also enjoyed playing video games.

He also leaves behind his dogs, Loki and Kylo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Gary’s family is requesting those attending to wear face mask to prevent of spread of Covid.

Marcia Kay (Melson) Hollingsworth, 81, Greenfield, passed away on December 30, 2021 at Howard Community Hospital, Kokomo, IN.

 

She was born on September 13, 1940, in Tipton, IN, to the late Ralph and Deloris (Lambert) Melson. Marcia graduated from Tipton High School.

Marcia's recent employment was with Walmart in Greenfield assisting with their phone operations. She loved to read and complete cross work puzzles.

Marcia is survived by her 3 loving children: Deann Hollingsworth, Valerie (Roger) Beasley, and Brent Hollingsworth as well as her 4 loving grand-dogs.

Vivian E. Reeves, 96, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022

at Ashford Place Health Campus.

 

Born December 17, 1925 in Arrowsmith, Illinois, she was the daughter of Earl

DuBois and Emma (Steinlicht) DuBois and was raised by her mother and step

father, Fred Blackman of Homer , Indiana. 

 

She married Dale A. Reeves on November 17, 1946 in Rushville, and he preceded her in death.

 

Survivors include 2 daughters- Cathy Young (husband George) of Gig Harbor, Washington, and Connie Tuley of Washington Indiana; three grandchildren- Derek Young of Gig Harbor, Leslie Kirk (partner Justin Gonyea ) of Tacoma Washington, and Justin McFall (wife Autumn) of Rockville Indiana, and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her spouse.

 

She was a bookkeeper for various companies in Franklin and Shelbyville, and was one of the first women elected to office in Shelby County as Recorder, serving from 1968-1975.  She was a member of the West Street United Methodist Church, past president of BPW, and past president of the SE District of Elected Recorders.

 

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Friday January 7, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Pastor Robert Keck officiating.   

 

Burial will be in Lewis Creek Baptist Cemetery.  Friends may call on Friday morning from 11:00 am until the time of the service.

Norman Leon Voris, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2021
at his residence.

 

Born May 2, 1933 in Franklin, he was the son  of Rex Voris and Hazel (Willey) Voris.
He married Rose E. (Robbins) Voris on July 1, 1952 and she survives.

 

Other survivors include 2 sons- Lundy Voris (wife Melinda) of Shelbyville, Benji Voris (wife Bernadine) of Laurel; a daughter Tonya Johnson (significant other  Brian Gibson) of Shelbyville; 5 grandchildren- Amanda Voris, Jeremiah Johnson (wife Lisa), James Moore, Joshua Moore, Erin Smith; and 8 great grandchildren- Mackenzie, Michael, Liley, Kinsley, Peyton, Pyper, Ronan, and Ivan; 4 step grandchildren- Justin, Rebeka, Kaylee, and Samuel.  
 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bill Voris; and 3 sisters- Betty Slevin, Rosemary Mobley, and Barbara Thompson.
Mr. Voris had lived most of his life in this area, and graduated from Morristown High School in 1952.  He was a self employed welder/maintenance with Progressive Tank Products of Shelbyville for 40 years, retiring in 1998.  He attended Hope's Point Baptist Church, and was a US Army veteran.

 

Leon loved horses, camping, and trail riding in Brown County.  He enjoyed Indiana University basketball,  played basketball and ran track at Morristown High School, where he still holds the county record in the 100 yard dash.

 

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Rev. David Humphrey officiating. 

 

Friends may call on Thursday morning from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service. 

 

Burial will be at a later date in Richland Cemetery in Rush County.  Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion.

Allen W. Kuhn, 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2022, at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.

He was born November 17, 1936, in Blue Ridge, Shelby County, the son of Lawrence and Louise (Meloy) Kuhn. On June 18, 1960, he married Beverly Sue “Susie” Sarringhaus, and she preceded him in death on September 24, 2014.

Allen is survived by his daughter, Leann Smith and husband, Dustin, of Shelbyville; grandson, Mitchell Smith; sister, Kay Alkire and husband, Bob, of Loveland, Ohio; brother, Roger Kuhn and wife, Benita, of New Palestine; sister-in-law, Susan Kuhn of Frankfort; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to Susie, Allen was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Todd Kuhn. Allen graduated in 1954 from Waldron High School, and received his associates degree in engineering from IUPUI. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ.

Allen served in the National Guard.

He was a grain farmer and enjoyed raising cattle, hogs and sheep. Allen was also the manager of underground storage for Indiana Gas Company.

Allen was a member of the Shelby Masonic Lodge No. 28. He was a supporter of the Shelby County 4-H program and had formerly served on the Shelby County Fair Board for 10 years, being the Livestock Superintendent and Director of Concessions.

He also enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of the Columbus Gun Club.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at the funeral home, with Rev. Charles Jordan.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Sylvester Ezekiel Cooper, 87, of Shelbyville

Sylvester Ezekiel Cooper, 87, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, December 31, 2021 at MHP Medical Center.

 

Born December 7, 1934, in Ruggles, Kentucky, to James T. Cooper and Florabell (Lewis) Cooper. He married Janet Ann (Shortridge) VanScyoc Cooper on December 25, 1983 and she survives. 

 

Other survivors include 12 children: Robin Miller (husband Timothy) of Midland, TX;  Bill Cooper (wife Robin) of Muncie; Martha Jones of Muncie; Diane Essex (husband Jack) of Shelbyville; Geary VanScyoc (wife Karen) of Sheridan; Carla VanScyoc of Shelbyville; Sue Goodrich (husband John) of Shelbyville; Jon VanScyoc (wife Reyounora) of Las Vegas; Cheri Justus of Shelbyville; Brenda Browning of Mize, Mississippi; Steve VanScyoc (wife Elizabeth) of New Palestine; and Amy Daniel (husband Shannon) of Shelbyville. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Griffin of Muncie; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and 7 brothers and sisters.

 

Mr. Cooper had lived in this area since 1990 after moving from Daleville, IN. He had been a drywall finisher for 24 years for Union Local #47 of Indianapolis and had also served as Building Inspector for City of Shelbyville for a few years. He graduated from Gaston High School in Gaston, IN in 1953 and attended Ball State University. 

 

He was a U.S. Army veteran attaining the rank of Spec 3rd Class and serving in  the Korean conflict. 

 

Mr Cooper enjoyed fishing and playing guitar. He was a very hard worker and loved his family and grandchildren dearly.

 

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Dr. Robb Barlow officiating.

 

Friends may call from 11:00 am until the time of the service. A military graveside service will be observed.
