Anthony Wayne Carpenter, age 66 of Dover, passed away Friday, March 25, 2022.

He was born April 3, 1955 in Indiana to the late John Carpenter and Linda Lewis Carpenter.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, a Mason and a member of the Elks Lodge of Hot Springs.

Tony loved his family, music and politics and he enjoyed retirement at home. He was a loving husband, father and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt, Lee Crawford.

Survivors include his wife, Jalonna “Charlie” Carpenter; three children, Riley Carpenter, Anthony Wayne Carpenter “little Tony Jr., Ruthy Carpenter; one sister, Terri Benefiel (Todd); one brother, Tom Carpenter (Cindy); many loved grandchildren and nephew, Jonathan Carpenter.

Oscar Howard Jr., 78, of New Palestine, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Brandywine Golden Living Center in Greenfield.

He was born October 9, 1943, in Richmond, the son of Oscar Sr. and Irene (Hoskins) Howard.

Oscar is survived by his son, Patrick Howard and wife, Joy, of New Palestine; daughter, Sarah Howard of Southport; and grandchildren, Phoenix and Phoebe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice Haynes-Fry; and brothers, Toby Howard and Theodore Howard.

In 1962, he graduated from Richmond High School. He received his Master’s degree in Art from Ball State University.

Oscar was formerly an art teacher at Triton Central High School, retiring with over 25 years of service.

He enjoyed guns, cars and art.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Marilyn Elizabeth Phares, 93, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, in Bloomington, where she had lived for the past three and one half years.

She was born on January 31, 1929, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Henry Adolph Wendelboe and Wilburta Agnes (Garlitch) Wendelboe Eads. On March 22, 1947, she married Robert E. Phares, and he preceded her in death on November 3, 2013.

Marilyn is survived by her sons, John R. Phares (Connie), of Bloomington, and James W. Phares (Rick), of Indianapolis; step-grandchildren, Michelle (Eaton) Nolley (Gary) and Michael Eaton (Mandi); step-great-grandchildren, Matt Nolley, Heather (Nolley) Wilson (Jared), Ashley (Nolley) Livezey (Andrew), Jackson Eaton, Sydney Eaton, Trenton Eaton and Camden Eaton; and twin step-great-great-grandchildren, Mason Wilson and Lauren Wilson. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Robert, Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Arnold Eads; brother, Richard Wendelboe; and step-brother, Donald Eads.

Marilyn graduated from Shelbyville High School.

She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church.

Marilyn formerly worked as a secretary for Shelbyville Jr. High School and the Shelby Desk Company, retiring in 1991.

She was a 75-year member and past matron of the Naamah Chapter No. 73 Order of Eastern Star. Marilyn was also a member of Job’s Daughters, past president of Mary Mott Green Daughters of the American Revolution and past president of the Diligent Diggers Garden Club.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Nancy V. Soller, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at Altenheim Senior Living in Beech Grove, Indiana.

Born November 8, 1938 in Schenectady, New York, to August Richard Ryan and Frances Agnes Ruth of St. Louis, Missouri, and later Shelbyville. Nancy married David Urban Soller on June 30, 1962 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shelbyville. David preceded her in death on February 8, 1986 in Beech Grove.

Nancy graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1956 after moving from Schenectady at the beginning of her senior year and from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Nancy had many hobbies. She was a published author, painter, an avid gardener, scrapbook creator, a nutrition enthusiast and a talented crochetier. She enjoyed singing religious and traditional songs and playing piano. Among her favorite songs were “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles and “Amazing Grace.” She had a brilliant mind and an exceptional memory for small details. For many years she volunteered her time at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul-Indianapolis Archdiocesan Council. While a student at Saint Mary’s College, she was one of two girls selected to inset color tiles in the Jesse Tree as part of a large religious mural on the outside wall of Moreau Center for Arts which remains there today.

Nancy is survived by her five beloved children, Thomas David Soller and wife, Bonnie Jo Seybold, of Indianapolis, Robert Richard Soller and wife, Darla Sue Peoples, of Gilbert, Arizona, Daniel Edward Soller and wife, Alexandra Nowotny, of Springfield, Virginia, Patrick James Soller and wife, Joanne Louise Chesterson, of Greenwood, Indiana, and Mary “Molly” Frances Soller of Greenwood; brothers, Stewart Richard Ryan and wife, Rita Marie Sandman, of Norman, Oklahoma, David John Ryan and wife, Suzanne Hochstetter, of Carmel, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Andrew J. Jewell and wife, Courtney Marsh, Ryan P. Soller, Kathleen M. Soller, Elizabeth G. Soller, Kayla N. Soller, Cameron M. Soller, Benedict D. Soller, and Victoria C. Soller; two great-grandchildren, Emerson K. Jewell and Blaire M. Jewell.

In addition to her husband, David, Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, August Richard Ryan and Frances Agnes Ruth and her dear Aunts Mary Magdalen Ryan and Mary Virginia “Tante” Ruth.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with the rosary recited at 1:30 p.m.

Marjorie R. Bodily, 84, of St. Paul, passed away March 26, 2022 at Waldron Health & Rehab.

Marc A. Moore, 74, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022
at IU Health Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born August 24, 1947 in Shelby County, he was the son of Alonzo Fay Moore
and Leola (Haehl) Moore.

Survivors include a son- Chad Moore of Shelbyville, a daughter Lynn Baker
(husband Aric) of Fairland; and one granddaughter Riley Moore of Shelbyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Moore was a lifetime resident of this area, and graduated from Morristown
High School in 1965.  He was a lifelong self employed farmer and a school bus 
driver for 47 years with Shelbyville Central Schools, retiring in 2014.

Marc enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing baseball and basketball in earlier years,
and loved sprint and midget car racing.

Public graveside services will be 1:00 pm on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Bennett Cemetery with Rev. David Humphrey officiating.

Kelly Marie Quack, 61, of Fountaintown, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022, at her home.

She was born August 22, 1960, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the daughter of Walter and Beverly (Judeika) Schindler. On July 16, 1985, she married Robert Joseph Quack, and he survives.

In addition to Robert, Kelly is survived by her mother of Spokane Valley, Washington; daughter, Kelsey Quack of Lexington, Kentucky; brothers, Bud Schindler and wife, Colleen, Marty Schindler, Bob Schindler and wife, Tina, all of St. Mary’s, Kansas, Joseph Schindler and wife, Polly, of Spokane Valley, and Andy Schindler; sister, Mary Berg of Denver, Colorado; mother-in-law, Barbara Jean (Suttle) Quack of Indianapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; and father-in-law, Robert E. Quack.

Kelly graduated in 1978 from Tremper High School in Kenosha.

She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and also attended Saint Mark’s Catholic Church in Southport.

Kelly was a title insurance examiner at First American Title Insurance, for last five years of her 30-year career in real estate title insurance.

She enjoyed going to the Indianapolis 500.

Kelly loved her family and cherished the time she spent creating memories with them. She was musically inclined and played the piano and violin.

She also enjoyed watching and feeding the hummingbirds.

Judy Bass Van Dao passed away peacefully at Walker Place in Shelbyville, Indiana, on March 25, 2022.

Born May 8, 1940, Judy was the daughter of Raymond M. Bass and Marie Crosby Bass of Fairland. Judy graduated from Waldron High School in 1958. She attended Purdue University for two and a half years before transferring to Ball State University. She graduated from Ball State with a degree in Medical Technology.

Judy was employed at Thornton Hammond for three years before moving to Hawaii in 1965, where she worked at Sun Towers Hospital. While in Hawaii, Judy met her husband, Hoa Van Dao, in 1967. They were married in 1968 and celebrated 45 years of marriage before Hoa’s passing on October 19, 2013.

In 1969 Judy and Hoa moved to El Paso, Texas, where Judy worked at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, from which she retired after 20 years.

She is survived by her only child, Michael Raymond Van Dao, her beloved Shih Tzu Molly, and her sister Ann B. McDaniel, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoa Van Dao, her sister Allene B. Eiler, and her brothers Marsten R. Bass, Dwight S. Bass, and Dwain J. Bass.

Judy loved to travel and enjoyed horseback riding, Purdue football, and decorating. She was a friend to nature and animals.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Waldron Methodist Church, 202 W. Washington St. in Waldron.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be at 11 a.m. at the church, followed by a meal at 12:30 p.m. Please RSVP by leaving a message at 317/512-1145, by noon on Wednesday.

Terry A. Whited, 66, of Shelbyville, passed into the arms of our Lord after a long illness on March 25, 2022.

Marshall R. Lair, 84, of Greenfield, passed away on March 22, 2022 in Greenfield.

He was born to the late R.J. and Retta (Troxell) Lair on October 10, 1937 in Wayne County, KY. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He married the love of his life, Linda Lair, she preceded him in death. He worked in manufacturing at Navistar for several years before retirement.

Marshall enjoyed watching Nascar and John Wayne movies, working puzzles, attending church and was a big Civil War Buff.

He is survived by his 3 grandchildren, Steven Roberts (Jessica Roberts), Christina Dodd (Karmen Lewis), and Amber Roberts; companion, Faye Silvers; 4 great grandchildren; his sister, Marteen Montgomery.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his 7 siblings: Wilmont Lair, Bernice Whitler, Junior Lair, John Lair, Ruby Bonke, and Lorraine York; as well as his daughters Jennifer Lair and Pamela Roberts.

Patricia J. Garrett, 89, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022 at St. Francis Hospital.

She was born June 8, 1932 in Shelbyville to Benjamin “Benny” Smith and Helen (Matthews) Smith.

Patricia graduated from Shelbyville High School, class of 1950 and was a graduate of Indiana Business College. After completion of Indiana Business College, she was employed by RCA in Indianapolis. Then she worked at J.C. Penny Co. in Shelbyville, before finding her calling in banking. She was employed as a bank bookkeeper at Shelby National Bank for nearly 3 decades, retiring from J.P. Morgan Chase. 

Patricia was a lifetime member of Second Baptist Church and the Second Baptist Church Missionary Group.  She loved to read and was an enthusiastic basketball fan.  She enjoyed babysitting and taking care of the kids.  Her most cherished times were spent with her family and loved ones.

She married James E. Garrett on January 10, 1959 and he preceded her in death on April 29, 2008.

Patricia is survived by her son, James E. Garrett, Jr. (Tonita); grandson, James E. Garrett III; granddaughter, Taylor Taylor, nieces and nephews, Barbara Helen O’Banyon, Teresa Floyd, Mary Ruth Crowe, Timothy E, O’Banyon, Michael Smith, Vincent Smith, Jr, Judy Garrett Shelton, Laurie Jean Garrett-Cobina, John Garrett Wicks, William G. Garrett, Steven M. Wicks, a host of great-nieces and nephew, and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her grandson, Thomas Leon Garrett, her son, Kevin W. Garrett, nephew Roger O’Banyon, nieces Donna Powell, Tina Garrett and Delores Smith, 3 sisters and 1 brother.

Crystal Lynn Wood (Prather), 48, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022 in Indianapolis.

She was born June 2, 1973 in Shelbyville, Indiana to Clifton Prather Sr. and Ellen (Featherstone)  Prather.

Crystal attended Shelbyville High School. She also attended the Basma School for the Blind. She loved gardening and being a home maker. She could spot a yard sale a mile away. She enjoyed listening to Fleetwood Mac but her greatest joy was spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren.

Survivors include son Corey Wooten (Shiloh Green) and daughter Courtney Stambaugh (Gene) and grandchildren Ethan Wooten, McKinley Justus, David Cloud and Crue Wooten, sister, Tonja Prather, brothers Clifton Prather Jr., Brian Prather (Carrie) James Prather and twin brother Scott Prather (Francis), sister, April Prather, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jackie J. Tunks, 92, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, March 4, 2022 at

Morristown Manor.

She was born on August 9, 1929, and  later married Ernest Tunks, who  preceded her

in death. She is survived by her care giver Jana Dorsey of Manilla. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, a son, and a daughter.

Mrs. Tunks had lived in this area since 2014, after moving from Elkhart.  She was a 

home maker and a self employed quilter, who loved to quilt and to sell her quilts, and also enjoyed attending the casino and playing scratch off tickets.

Steven E. Higginbotham, 57, of Shelbyville, passed from this world on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at his workplace.

Born December 15, 1964 in Shelbyville, he was the second child of Shirley J (Bennett) Higginbotham and Edward Higginbotham.

Steve is survived by his Mother, Father, and Sisters- Elaine K. (Kevin) Schramm of Yuma, Arizona, Kathy Schlimgen of Venice, California, and special friend Ms. Jodie Moore of Shelbyville. He will also be missed by several uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Steve was a 1983 graduate of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis and had most recently worked at Allied Universal Security Services in Shelbyville as a Security Officer for several years. Steve had a love for cats instilled in him by his Mother, and was saddened by the recent loss of 2 of his furry friends. He liked music, video games, and just relaxing after work with a cold bottle of Mountain Dew. He also was a fan of the many forms of martial arts.

Steve's wish of cremation and a small graveside service will be respected, with burial near to his Mother's final resting place, in Miller Cemetery at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

Lois E. Jackson, age 88, of Greenfield, passed away March 20, 2022, in Fountaintown.

She was born October 15, 1933, in Greenfield to the late John W. and Hazel A. (Lane) Jackson. Lois was a 1951 graduate of Greenfield High School and prior to her retirement she was a typist for Indiana Lumberman’s Insurance Company. Lois was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time outdoors.

She is survived by her brother Max (Virginia) Jackson of Greenfield, several nieces, and nephews. She is preceded in death by parents listed above, and sister Dorothy Adams.

Stephen Charles “Steve” Harmon, 63, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus.

He was born on July 3, 1958, in Indianapolis, the son of Veo J. and N. Louise (Wyatt) Harmon.

Steve is survived by his sister, Susan J. “Susie” Headley of Sebastian, Florida; and his niece, Trinity Harmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, John D. Harmon.

Steve graduated in 1976 from Lawrence Central High School.

He was a computer technician for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Steve was an avid member of the NRA.

Kelly Ann Sebastian, 54, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022 at

OUR Hospice Inpatient Facility.

Born August 15, 1967 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Richard "Dick" Sebastian and Mary Ann (Colee) Sebastian.  

Survivors include her mother Mary Ann of Shelbyville; a sister Tina Justice of Shelbyville;  niece Jessica Bowers (husband Noah) of Shelbyville; nephew Joey Justice of Shelbyville; 2 great nieces- Ellie and Emmie; and one great nephew Lincoln.  She was preceded in death by her father and a brother Trent Allen Sebastian.

Ms. Sebastian had lived in this area since 2017, after moving from Florida.  She graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1985, and had been employed as office manager/collector with ABC Supply in Fort Lauderdale Floria for 20 years.

Kelly enjoyed traveling, shopping, cruising, and visiting Disneyworld.

James D. Skaggs, 46, of Shelbyville, IN passed away Friday, March 18, 2022 at his residence.

He was born April 30, 1975 in Shelbyville to Freddy Skaggs and Jenny Rutherford. 

James graduated from Southwestern High School in 1995. He was an industrial technician and specialized in restoring damages caused by natural disasters as well as   He was a hard worker and loved his work helping those in need.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and traveling with his family.

James married Debbie (Patterson) Skaggs on September 8, 2007, and she survives.

He is also survived by his father, his son, Tylor Skaggs, and daughter, Jenny Skaggs, 2 sisters, 3 brothers, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Victoria Ann Bartlett,  72,  of Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 4:00 PM Friday, March 18, 2022.

Born on August 28, 1949 in Logansport, Victoria Ann Gates was a treasured daughter of Thomas and Marsha Dillman Gates.  Growing up she shared her childhood with two sisters and a brother. Viki graduated from Rochester High School in 1968.

On August 11, 1979 Viki married the love of her life, Mr. James Maurice Bartlett.  Together they enjoyed over 42 years of life's adventures.  From their union came a trio of beautiful daughters.  The family tree continued to grow with the blessings of two more generations.

Viki was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.  Many will remember her as a medical receptionist at Woodlawn Hospital.

To relax Viki watched true crime shows on TV while sipping on her favorite drink lemonade.  She and Jim took several summer vacations to fish the lakes of Minnesota.  Their favorite destination was Big Moose Lake, MN.  She also played slot machine games on her phone.

Left to cherish Viki's memory our her husband Jim at home; 3 daughters: Michele Arnett of Rochester, Melinda Navara (Joe) of Akron, Bridget Bartlett and fiancé David Fox of Rochester; 7 grandchildren:  Jessamyn McClure (T.J.), Devon Vanraalte, Kayleen Vannostrand and companion Jeremiah Carpenter, twins Austin Razer and Skyler Razer, Kaili Navara, Taylor Navara;  6 great-grandchildren: Imana, Amara, Jacob James, Mia, Luna, Esmaye; 2 sisters: Terry Gates of Talma and Jennie Bradley (Jake) of Rochester; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving are her treasured canines Poindexter James, the handsome Jack Russell Terrier and grand dog Axl Slash, the French Mastiff.

Preceding Viki in death are her parents Tom and Marsha Gates, infant son James Thomas Bartlett and a brother Ernie Gates.

Gladys H. Stahl Arbuckle, 72, of Rochester, passed away at 10:05 PM on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Woodlawn Hospital of Rochester.

On April 2, 1949, Gladys Hope was born in Kankakee, IL to Everette and Thelma  Brouette Mills.

Gladys and Charles L. Stahl were married on April 10, 1965 in Kankakee. He passed away on October 19, 2000.  On August 2, 2002, Gladys married Larry E. Arbuckle, sadly he passed away on October 10, 2014.

As a molder, Gladys worked at NISCO for 20 years. Listening to country music was a great way to relax. Her favorite artists were Anne Murray, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton and Elvis. Playing solitaire and doing word search puzzles kept her mind sharp.  She had a unique collection of angels and dolls.  With her talent of sewing and crocheting, she made doll clothing.

Left to cherish the memories of Gladys are a daughter, Tammy Clapper and husband Ron Sr. of Rochester; eight grandchildren: Ronald Clapper Jr. and wife Bianca, Timothy Clapper, Kayla Jordan and husband Johnny, Kyle Clapper and wife Cindy, Gretchen Jones, Gwen Laurie and husband Kevin, Uriah Milner and fiancé Brianna, Paige Robinson and husband Will; eleven great grandchildren: Braxton, Jessie, Judith, Mason, Sophia, Alyssa, Grayson, Wyatt, Dalton, Ava, Memphis; numerous nieces and nephews; and feline companions, Bella a buff color and a calico mix Baby girl.

Preceding Gladys in death are her parents; husband; daughter, Debra J. Stahl; son Jeffery Allan Stahl; two sisters: Rosalie Cooper, Violet Wilson; and three Mills brothers: Arthur, Furman and Everette Jr.

A celebration of the life of Gladys Arbuckle will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday,  March  23, 2022 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th St., Rochester.

James “Jim” Leroy Ott, 80 of New Palestine, passed away on March 16, 2022, in Indianapolis.

He was born on September 27, 1941, in Indianapolis, IN to the late James Frances and Julia Jean (Waddell) Ott. He married the love of his life Judy (Taylor) Ott on February 3, 1961, she survives. Jim retired from Indiana Power & Light after 37 years of service.

He enjoyed spending time with his loving family and reading.

Jim is survived by his wife, Judy; his three daughters, Kellie (Larry) Bryant, Kimberly (David) DeVore and Karla Ott; 2 sisters, Robin Kekar and Gloria Hollenbaugh; his brother, Jason Ott; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Ott.

Graveside service for Jim will be held on Wednesday March 23, 2022, at 10 AM in New Palestine Cemetery.

Margaret M. Keppel, 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022 at her residence surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born May 25, 1936 in Shelbyville to Frank Whitten and Mary (Barnhart) Whitten.

Margaret attended Manilla High School.  She was self-employed as a private duty nurse for 14 years.

She lived in Shelby County most of her life.  Margaret was a member of Town and Country Christian Church.  She enjoyed sports, especially watching the Cubs and Pacers play.  She also enjoyed listening to country music.

Margaret had a love for people and enjoyed visiting with them. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and grandchildren.

  She married Stanley Hittle on March 2, 1953 and he preceded her in death in October of 1959.  She then married John Keppel on March 24, 1979 and he preceded her in death in July of 1992.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Martha (Dale) Phillips; and Mary (Kevin) LaRussa; her sons, Leroy (Bev) Hittle; Keith (Elissa) Keppel, and Gary Keppel; her sister, Betty Keppel, her brother, Gilbert (Irma) Whitten; 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her daughter, Marilyn Murnan, her brother, Jake Whitten, and her sister, Donna Whitten.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Amaralis “Carol” Anspaugh passed away, March 14, 2022 at I.U. Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

Carol (79) was born May 28, 1942 in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of Thomas Carlton & Geraldine Lorent.  The Lorents moved to Shelbyville with the General Electric Company in August of 1955.  She attended Shelby Township Elementary School, Shelbyville High School, and then transferred to Waldron High School where she graduated.  She attended Indiana Business College right after graduation. 

Carol married her best friend and classmate, Herbert Hiatt, a Shelbyville police officer.  After a few years, they started a business, Shelby Security Services, Inc., a nightwatch service.  They hired other off-duty police officers to help watch businesses in town until Herb’s death at 29.  After three years, she married Robert Anspaugh at St. Joseph Church.

Carol was employed for twenty-six years at Major Hospital.  She was a preschool teacher at St. Joseph School, and she worked in the arts and crafts room at the Shelbyville Boys & Girls Club.  She was a volunteer teaching religious education for eighteen years at St. Joseph Church.  Most recently she volunteered at Major Health Partners Benesse Oncology Center in the boutique.  Carol was a member of St. Joseph’s St. Anne’s Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.

Carol is survived by her four children Jeff (Julie) Hiatt, Chino Valley, AZ; Greg (Dana) Hiatt, Westfield, IN; Merri-Anne Hiatt (Brian) Sullivan, Shelbyville; Joseph (Angela) Anspaugh, Shelbyville.  Her thirteen grandchildren are Danielle Schnake, Audrey Hiatt, Heath Hiatt, Jack Hiatt, Max Hiatt, Ava Hiatt, Alyx Hiatt, Jaden Hiatt, Megan Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Brianne Sullivan, Jonah Anspaugh, Julian Anspaugh, Josie Anspaugh, and Jude Anspaugh.  Her great-grandchildren are Ransom Schnake, Jamison Hiatt, Layla Hiatt, Jaden Hiatt, Jr., Nick Hiatt, and Rosie Hiatt.

Carol never knew a stranger. She loved God, her family & friends, and helping others. 

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Mike Keucher officiating.

Phyllis A. Haus, 76, of Shelbyville, IN passed away March 11,2022 at the Waldron Rehab and Healthcare, Waldron, IN. She was born August 8,1945 in McQueary County, KY the daughter of the late Willie Cook and Tona (Hughes) Cook.

She met Robert J. Haus and was married April 24, 1964, and he preceded her in death in 2018. She also was preceded in death by parents, daughter, Robin Annette Haus, brothers, Dempsey,

Billie, Ronald, Robert, Richard, James and Charles Cook, sister, Caroll Sue Cook, Mary Margaret Jones and a grandson, Joseph Strang.

Phyllis graduated from Southwestern High School. She worked in assisted living care in Walker House and also worked 23 years for Old Hickory Furniture. She was a believer of the gospel and accepted Christ as her Savior. Phyllis enjoyed cooking, playing cards, but most of all loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her survivors include children, William (Jamie) Haus of Shelbyville, IN; Robert (Teresa) Haus of Waldron, IN; Sharon (Robert) Hobbs of New Castle, IN; Danny (Denise) Bailey of Indianapolis, IN; a sister, Rita Fry of Portland, IN; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Phyllis will be on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 10:00AM in Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IN.

John D. Stoops, 71 of Franklin, IN formerly of Boggstown, IN passed away March 11,2022 at his residence.

He was born November 4,1950 in Boggstown, IN the son of the late Ralph Stoops and Mildred (Padrick) Stoops. John was a 1969 graduate of Triton Central High School. He was a truck driver working 40 years as a Teamster's trucker.

John was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Carl and James Stoops, Anna Perew and Judy Dunham. He is survived by his companion, Cathy Schwarzkopf; his brother, William Stoops of The Philippines; several nieces and nephews and great nieces.

He enjoyed his family, loved to travel and also target shooting. He loved to talk to people and never met a stranger.

Nettie Jean Ebert, 90, passed away Wednesday evening, March 9, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.

Nettie—a long time resident of Morristown IN, was born in Buckeye Holler, Knox County, Kentucky, October 5, 1931. She grew up on Stinking Creek, KY with her mother, Birdie (Mills) Smith, Sister-Zemalia Hubbard, and Brother—Earl Smith. After moving to Indianapolis, in 1948 to live with family—she fell in love and married George G. Ebert Jr. on January 22, 1949. George, her beloved husband and father to her 5 children preceded her in death on April 11, 2013. Nettie was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Shelbyville, IN and attended Brookville Road Community Church in New Palestine, IN for many years.

Nettie is survived by her children: George G. Ebert III (wife, Anita) of Fort Wayne, Juanita M. Brand of New Palestine, Sheila A. Appleby (husband-Randy), Clarence E. Ebert (wife, Robin), Greg W. Ebert (wife, Rebecca)—all from Morristown, Tom Antrobus of Liberty, and Diana Deweese of Pineville, Louisiana, Nettie was also blessed with 15 grandchildren; 29 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Nettie, had many different jobs in her life as she and George worked hard to raise their 5 children. She was a caregiver for others at home and at Hancock Regional, she was a campground attendant, she worked in the local factory making auto parts, she was a waitress/ server and became first licensed woman bartender in Indiana. Nettie loved camping, as well as fishing with ‘George’. She and George were instrumental in helping establish the Brookville Anglers -Annual Children's Tournament—which was a wonderful way to young children understand the joy of fishing and the importance of sharing that joy with others.

Nettie was always one to help another who was in need. It could be someone who didn’t have diapers, formula or a baby bed or even a car or a stove. She would work to help others in need- in a quiet and selfless manner. She was one who others sought out for motherly advice and comfort in times of need.

But Nettie’s proudest accomplishment was the way she modeled and guided her children as a role model for hard work, determination, joy and love–in her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother & daughter-in-law. She cared for her mother-in-law—Lavania Ebert, for 8 years while Lavania was bed-ridden. She raised 7 children to be thoughtful, kind and productive persons who gave back to the world--with one son as a highly successful mechanical engineer; one daughter who was a Cardiac Nurse, one daughter who is a Nurse Practitioner and Professor of Nursing; one son who is a Pastor and a gifted carpenter; another son who has a wonderful gift to maintain and repair any sort of engine or auto and works to help ensure that others—less fortunate have opportunities to have needed transportation. And finally, Nettie and George gave the gift of themselves—where they changed a family tragedy into a blessing for all—by choosing to raise their niece and nephew after the tragic loss of their parents—and embrace them in their family as their own children.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Hubert Nolen officiating. Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.

Clinton (Clint) William Ettinger, 33, Greenfield, passed away March 12, 2022, in his home. He was born May 24, 1988 to parents Bill Ettinger and Judi Ettinger.

He graduated from New Palestine High School in 2006 and attended Ball State University.

He proudly worked for Indy Humane Society as well as Rubber Products, National Chimney, and most recently at LabCorp in Greenfield. Clint was a very talented artist, a huge animal lover and especially passionate about rescues. He enjoyed music and concerts, playing disc golf, gardening (his hot hot peppers!), eating any exotic or gourmet food, and designing his custom tattoos. He was a loving son and a caring friend to so many people. He wore his heart on his sleeve and his huge personality will be missed by everyone.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel; his parents; stepmother, Debbie Ettinger; his special new pup Persephone; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Jim and Shirley Willey and Howard and Doris Ettinger; uncles, Jimmy and Jeff Willey; and most recently his beloved dog, Mr. Pinkerton.

A Gathering of Friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.

Hillary Scroggham, 29, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at her residence.

She was born May 26, 1992 in Indianapolis to Jeff Scroggham and Dawn Bassett.

She was employed at Burger King and Rally’s.

Hillary loved spending time with her family and friends.  She will be remembered for the compassion she showed to everyone she knew.

She is survived by her mother, her step-dad, Tim Rhodes, her son, Daize Fortner, her brother, Jacob Scroggham, her grandmother, Betty Burch, and her step-grandfather, Frank Burch.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jeff Scroggham, her grandfathers, Jack Bassett, and Charles Scroggham.

Betty J. Benson died suddenly March 10,2022 at Heritage House of Shelbyville.

She was born in Waldron, Indiana, on April 26, 1928. Her parents were Nellie (Moore) Yeager and Charles S Yeager.  She was married in Waldron to John F. Benson June 22, 1947.  He preceded her in death in 2017. 

Their children are David A. Benson of Greensburg, IN, John C. (Jay) Benson wife Sherry of Waldron, IN, Judy L Kuhn husband Steve, Joyce Lux husband Danny both of Shelbyville, IN. She is survived by ten grandchildren; Mike (Kimberly) Benson, Mark (Darla) Benson, Greg Benson, Katie (Chad) Crews, Matt (Amy) Kuhn, Patrick (Amber) Kuhn, Kevin (Viktoria) Kuhn, Ashley (Lee) Tanks, Benson Harlamert, Brian (Farrah) Taylor and great grandchildren; Tyler (Audrey) Benson, Maggie (Sklyer) Peetz, Mollie Benson, Alyssa Benson, Collin Kuhn, Jackson Kuhn, Camren Kuhn, Kate Kuhn, Leah Kuhn, Aleksandr Kuhn, Ethan Kuhn, Anna Kuhn, Ella Tanks and Harley Tanks. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John F Benson and six siblings: Donald Yeager, Roy Yeager, Robert Yeager, Mildred Boyle, Maxine Winkler, Evelyn Weintraut and daughter-in-law Nancy E Benson.

She was a member of the Waldron Baptist Church, Liberty 57 Extension Homemakers club, a 1947 Waldron graduate and belonged to the Camp-Lack-A lot group.

She was a bookkeeper for Benson Construction, and she was a cook at Waldron High School, worked at Cunningham Gardens, in the office at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Dept.

She loved to cook and host family gatherings. Noodles, pie, peach cobbler, chili sauce were some of her specialties.  She was a competitive euchre player and enjoyed antiques. 

Viewing will be Monday, March 14, 2022, from 4:00-8:00 pm and Tuesday, March 15 from 9:00-10:00 am with the funeral on Tuesday, March 15 at 10:00 am at Glenn E George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Rd., Shelbyville, IN. 

Burial will be in the Van Pelt Cemetery, St. Paul.

Mary Corley, 84, of Shelbyville, passed away February 28, 2022 at MHP Medical Center.

 She was born January 30, 1938 in Shelbyville to Chet and Alice (Dake) Corley.

Mary was employed in her early years at G.E. before they closed.

She is survived by her sons, Timothy Shearer of Franklin, Jeffery Shearer of Shelbyville, Mark Shearer of Indianapolis, and Brian Shearer of Shelbyville, her grandchildren, Shelby, Joshua, Jessica, Hannah, Sarah, Zachary, and Jenna; 9 great-grandchildren, and her brother, Norman Corley.

Mary was the youngest of 13 children.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 11 of her siblings, and her son, Jon Shearer.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m, Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Mary Amanda Fishback Nickolas, 97, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022

at Ashford Place Health Campus.

She was born   August 11,1924 to parents Everett Fishback and Emma (Meyer) Fishback in Williamstown, Indiana.  They moved to Manilla, Indiana in 1932, and she graduated from Manilla High School in 1942.  She attended Beauty School of Indianapolis and started her beauty shop in a house next to the school. 

She married Charles "Tom" Nickolas on November 21, 1945, and he preceded her on July 15, 2011.  

She then moved her shop to her home where she operated it for the next 38 years.  She worked second shift at TRW Cinch for 12 years, and at Heritage House Convalescent Center and Heritage Manor, retiring in 2006.  

Mary belonged to the Manilla Christian Church where she was baptized at the age of 10 in Pitts Ford.

She attended Morristown Christian Church for several years, Prime Time Bible Study, and was a member of Rush County Home Makers Club, attended Indiana Eye Support Group, and the Coffee and Comfort Support Group in Shelbyville.

Mary is survived by her sister Linda Fishback Parton of Indianapolis; two daughters Marsha Fishback Neeb, of Shelbyville, Vicki Nickolas Weitzel (Gary), of Manilla, one son Jon Nickolas, of Rushville. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, son Jim Nickolas, daughter Susan Nickolas Lower; 2 grandsons Jamie Nickolas and Trampas Weitzel.  She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.

She loved spending time with her family, and was very happy at the Ashford Place, where she made many made many friends.

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Pastor Fred Hickman officiating. 

Burial will be in Blue River Wesleyan Cemetery in Rush County.
