Class 4A, No. 10 Shelbyville has faced little adversity in getting off to a 15-1 start this season.

On Thursday at 4A No. 4 New Palestine, the Golden Bears struggled to play a clean game and lost an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

The Dragons got a strong pitching performance from University of Louisville recruit Sam Booe, produced timely hits and did not commit an error in collecting its second win of the week over a state-ranked opponent, 4-3.

The Golden Bears got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Kylee Edwards led off the game with a base hit and Karissa Hamilton delivered her 16^th home run of the season.

The top of the third inning proved pivotal, though. After intentionally walking Hamilton to load the bases with no outs, Booe was able to set down Katie Mathies, Addisenn Weaver and Cheyenne Eads without a run scoring.

Then the Dragons (16-0, 3-0 HHC) started chipping away with help from a Shelbyville defense that committed five errors.

New Palestine scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game and took the lead in the fifth, 3-2.

Shelbyville (15-2, 5-1 HHC) tied the game in the top of the sixth then was left stung by a controversial call in the bottom half of the inning.

With two outs, Hamilton appeared the make a diving catch in centerfield that was ruled a trap. That allowed what proved to be the game-winning run to score.

Booe tossed the complete game, allowing six hits while striking out eight. She was the winning pitcher Wednesday as well after defeating 4A No. 7 Center Grove, 1-0.

Eads scattered eight hits and allowed just two earned runs while taking the loss.

Shelbyville will need help to get at least a share of the HHC title. The Golden Bears’ final conference game is Tuesday against Mt. Vernon (11-2, 3-1 HHC).

New Palestine has four HHC games left on its schedule.

The Dragons have one more ranked opponent this week. Top-ranked Roncalli (14-0) visits New Palestine for a 10 a.m. game Saturday.

Shelbyville is back in action today at Batesville (6-5).

Next week, the Golden Bears host Whiteland Monday, Mt. Vernon Tuesday, travel to Hamilton Heights Thursday and host Triton Central Friday before getting its marquee matchup with Roncalli on May 11.

Shelbyville has added a road contest at Center Grove on May 20.

#12 (1A) Indianapolis Lutheran broke open a 1-1 game with an 11-run third inning to defeat Triton Central in ICC softball, 13-3.

Savanna Trueblood pitched 5 2/3 in suffering the loss.  Just six of the Lutheran (7-7, 2-1 ICC) runs were earned.  It was a rough day defensively for TC as six errors helped the Saints' cause.

Hailey Harris, Lauren Hatch and Abigail Eberhart accounted for the Tiger hits on the day.  Taylor Heath scored two runs.  Harris had the other for TC (6-5, 0-3 ICC).

Logan Young was 1-for-5 at the plate with a stolen base and a run batted in Sunday in Indiana University South Bend’s 13-8 Senior Day loss to Roosevelt at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs, in South Bend, Indiana.

The Titans swept a Tuesday doubleheader at Lincoln College, 8-0 and 4-3.

Young, a Shelbyville graduate (photo), was 1-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs in game one and threw one scoreless inning of relief in game two.

The Titans are 19-21 this season.

Natalie Weber

The Shelbyville graduate celebrated her Senior Day Tuesday at Franklin College going 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI in an 8-0 win over Anderson.

Weber followed that with a 2-for-4 performance in a 4-3 win in game two of the doubleheader.

On Friday, Weber had a solo home run and two RBIs in an 8-6 win vs. Manchester.

At Washington (Mo.) Sunday, Weber had a two-run home run and a double in a 5-1 victory for Franklin.

The Grizzlies are 17-9 this season.

Madisen Hinderliter

The Shelbyville graduate won the hammer throw (38.4 meters) and finished fourth in the discus (30.81 meters) for St. Francis (Ind.) Saturday in the Huntington University Invite in Huntington, Ind.

Erin Diemer

The Shelbyville graduate placed sixth in the pole vault competition for Southern Illinois University Friday at the Clark Wood Open in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Triton Central graduate took 12^th in the 100 meters (11.58 seconds), 19^th in the 200 (23.87) and eighth in the long jump (20 feet, 1.5 inches) for Wabash College Friday in the Big Blue Open hosted by Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

The Shelbyville graduate carded rounds of 102 and 107 for Earlham College’s women’s golf team Friday and Saturday in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship held at Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Club in Harrison, Ohio.

Morgan Stieneker

The Shelbyville graduate was 3-for-6 with three runs scored Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep for Olney Central College at Rend Lake College.

Olney won game one, 8-0, and took game two, 5-3, to improve to 20-22 this season.

On Monday, Stieneker was 5-for-6 with two runs scored in a pair of victories over Southwestern Illinois College.

Indiana Tech Invite

Kaden Branam, a Waldron graduate (photo), finished fourth in the high jump competition Friday at the Indiana Tech Invite in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Branam cleared 6-6.25 in an event that featured two more Shelby County graduates.

Steffen Shackelford, a Southwestern graduate, placed eighth with a best clearance of 6-2.25.

Chandler Martin, a Shelbyville graduate, finished ninth, also clearing 6-2.25.

Joe Lux, a Shelbyville graduate, finished 31^st in the 800 (2:11.83) for Indiana Tech.

Friday Night Twilight Meet

Southwestern graduate Taylor Tatlock (photo) threw the javelin a personal best 118-08 for Franklin College Friday to win the event hosted by Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Ind.

The distance was a new personal best for Tatlock and moved her to third all-time on FC’s outdoor track and field record board.

She also finished 15^th in the hammer throw (82-08) and fourth in the discus (106-09).

Dalen Williams, a Waldron graduate, finished second in the discus at 137-07, a new personal best, and third in the javelin (135-07) for Franklin College.

Kenneth Gipson, a Triton Central graduate, finished seventh in the discus (108-11) for Rose-Hulman.

Jill Anspaugh, a Shelbyville graduate, finished 10^th in the 3,000 (12:22.96) for Franklin.

Zaleeya Martin posted a pair of personal bests for Hanover College.

The Shelbyville graduate finished sixth in the 200 (26.7) and third in the long jump (16-5.25) – both personal bests – and finished runner-up in the 100 (12.59).

She also was part of Hanover’s third-place finishing 400 relay team (51.81).

Class 4A, No. 10-ranked Shelbyville softball moved one step closer Tuesday to clinching at least a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference title.

The Golden Bears pummeled 4A, No. 25 Greenfield-Central, 17-4.

Shelbyville’s powerhouse offense produced six more home runs, including a pair each from Katie Mathies and Kylie McIver. Maddie Campton and Karissa Hamilton also homered to push the team total to 50 this year in 16 games.

Shelbyville (15-1, 5-0 HHC) led 2-1 going into the top of the third inning when it exploded for 10 runs.

Cheyenne Eads earned the win with four innings of work, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out six. Brooke Lipperd tossed a scoreless fifth inning to complete the HHC win.

Mathies and McIver each went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Addisenn Weaver, Hamilton, Eads and Campton each had two hits.

Three of the Cougars’ four runs came on solo home runs by Ella Redmon (2) and Caroline Gibson.

Shelbyville continues its quest for an HHC title Thursday at 4A, No. 4 New Palestine (14-0, 2-0 HHC). The Dragons take on 4A No. 7 Center Grove today and host 4A No. 1 Roncalli Saturday.

Pairings for the upcoming Indiana High School Athletic Association Softball and Baseball State Tournaments will be announced Sunday via live webstream.

The matchups for the softball state tournament will be released Sunday at 6 p.m.

The baseball state tournament pairings will follow at 7 p.m.

Both pairings shows will be hosted by Greg Rakestraw and streamed live on the IHSAA’s video portal at IHSAAtv.org.

Immediately following both shows, all sectional pairings will be available online at IHSAA.org.

Shelbyville softball and baseball will compete in Class 4A, Sectional 14 which includes Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Columbus East, Columbus North and East Central.

Triton Central softball is assigned to 2A, Sectional 42 with Eastern Hancock, Heritage Christian, Scecina and Knightstown.

Triton Central baseball is in the same sectional assignment with a sixth team, Indianapolis Howe, in the field.

Morristown, Southwestern and Waldron softball and baseball are in Class A, Sectional 59 with Edinburgh, Greenwood Christian Academy and Lutheran.

Riding an 11-game winning streak and a new berth in the top 10 of the state coaches poll, Shelbyville softball travels north to Greenfield-Central today.

At 14-1, the Golden Bears cracked the top 10 for the first time this season in the latest poll.

Roncalli remains No. 1 in Class 4A, powered by the pitching of Keagan Rothrock, a University of Florida commit who is ranked No. 1 in the graduating class of 2023. The Golden Bears are scheduled to play at Roncalli on May 11.

Lake Central is No. 2 followed by Mooresville, New Palestine – Shelbyville’s opponent Thursday, and Crown Point.

The second five include Bedford North Lawrence, Center Grove, Decatur Central, Jasper and Shelbyville.

Other notables in the 4A poll include Franklin Central (No. 11), Mt. Vernon (No. 17), Franklin (No. 19), Pendleton Heights (No. 22), Columbus North (No. 22) and Greenfield-Central (No. 25).

Loogootee and Lanesville are tied atop the Class A poll. Hauser is ranked 7^th.

Tecumseh is No. 1 in 2A. Eastern Hancock is 8^th.

Danville leads the 3A poll. Yorktown is ranked 4^th.

Shelbyville’s high-powered offense is averaging 12.1 runs per game this season.

Karissa Hamilton, a University of Kentucky commit, leads the way with a .723 batting average. The junior also has team-highs in hits (34), home runs (14), runs batted in (37), walks (8) and runs scored (35).

Senior Katie Mathies, a DePauw commit, is hitting .688 with team-highs in doubles (10) and triples (3), and has eight home runs and 30 RBIs.

Sophomore Kylee Edwards, a highly-ranked college prospect, is batting .519 from the leadoff position with six doubles, four home runs, 14 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.

Senior Addisenn Weaver, a Valparaiso commit, is hitting .500 with seven doubles, five home runs and 23 RBIs.

Freshman Cheyenne Eads makes five Golden Bears hitting over .450 this season. She is at .471 with three doubles and two home runs.

Eads is 6-1 in the pitcher’s circle with a 3.56 earned run average over 39 innings of work.

Hailey Pogue, a sophomore, is 5-0 with a 3.45 ERA.

Brooke Lipperd, a junior committed to Franklin College, is 3-0 with a 4.07 ERA.

Triton Central golf found itself finishing third to a pair of Indianapolis-based schools Monday at Maple Creek Golf Course.

Cathedral secured a 29-shot victory over Heritage Christian, 160-189. The Tigers followed at 201.

Oliver Gearlds led Triton Central with a 41. Evan Uhls (52), Maxwell Ray (53) and Griffin Sego (55) completed the Tigers’ scorecard.

On Friday, Triton Central defeated Southwestern, 200-245, at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course.

Gearlds was the match medalist with a 41. Uhls shot 44 followed by Sego’s 53 and Ray’s 63.

Ty Burcham topped Southwestern with a 53. Completing the scorecard were Caleb Pappano (60), Tristan Pappano (63), and Justin Swift (64).

Triton Central takes on Whiteland Wednesday at The Legends Golf Club.

The Shelby County Tournament is Saturday at Timbergate Golf Course.

Shelbyville softball ran its winning streak to 11 straight and improved to 14-1 with a pair of dominant victories Friday over visiting Columbus East.

The Class 4A, 14^th-ranked Golden Bears won game one, 11-5, and cruised to a 22-1 win in game two.

Cheyenne Eads surrendered a leadoff home run to Kenzie Foster in game one but settled in and delivered five strong innings in the circle. She allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out four to collect the win.

Hailey Pogue pitched the final two innings to seal the victory.

Kylee Edwards, Katie Mathies and Addisenn Weaver each had three hits for Shelbyville.

Edwards had a triple and a home run, her fourth of the season.

Maddie Campton collected her fifth home run of the season.

Shelbyville broke open a 2-1 game with a five-run bottom of the third inning.

Foster also had a double and three runs batted in during a 3-for-4 performance for the Olympians (2-13).

In game two, the Golden Bears put up six runs in the home half of the first inning and never trailed, scoring 10 times in the second and six more in the third.

Ten different Golden Bears had a hit in the win. Kylie McIver, Eads and Pogue each went 3-for-4.

Weaver was 3-for-3 with six RBIs. She had two doubles and a home run. McIver and Pogue each had three RBIs.

Weaver’s home run was her fifth this season. McIver delivered her fifth.

Kaylie Phelps became the eighth Golden Bear to hit a home run this year.

Brooke Lipperd picked up the win, allowing five hits and one earned run.

Shelbyville has three road games scheduled this week.

On Tuesday, the Golden Bears (4-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference) travel to Greenfield-Central (10-2, 1-0 HHC).

Class 4A, No. 5 New Palestine (12-0, 1-0 HHC) hosts Shelbyville Thursday.

The week ends Friday with a road trip to Batesville (6-4).

A second set of Quarter Horse training races was held Thursday featuring 11 events for the sprinters prepping for the 2021 racing season at Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, Ind.

Of the 11 races, 10 were earmarked for two-year-olds going 250 yards, giving onlookers a first look at some of the local talent headed to the track in 2021.

One set finishing together was in the second race of the day as Honey B and BP Eagle Cartel, both from the Saul Perez barn, finished together with Fast N Fancy Stone from the Randy Smith barn. The trio of horses finished together, giving Honey B the nod in 13.9 seconds. Honey B, an Alabama-bred filly bred by Paris Wixon by Freighttrain B, is owned by Rodolfo Rodriguez.

The quickest time of the day was recorded in the fourth race as This Lovers Leavin stopped the timer in 13.85 seconds. The son of Coronas Leaving You was guided by Sammy Mendez for trainer Randy Smith. Hutchinson Racing and Debbie Smith own the Indiana-bred gelding.

The first Quarter Horse stakes of the season is May 17 featuring the Harley Greene Derby trials. The final will be held on the first All-Quarter Horse Saturday on June 5 with a first post of 10 a.m.

The 19^th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is now in progress and continues through Nov. 8. Live racing is conducted at 2:25 p.m. Monday through Wednesday with first post on Thursdays at 3:25 p.m.

Beech Grove (8-2, 1-0 ICC) scored five times in the third inning to break open a 1-0 ballgame and defeated Triton Central in ICC softball action Wednesday, 7-0.

Triton Central (4-3, 0-1 ICC) could only muster two hits on the day.  Taylor Heath doubled and Emma Stohry added a single for the Tigers as Hornets' freshman pitcher Malone Moore (1-0) earned the win with a complete game, 17-strikeout performance.

Triton Central freshman Hailey Harris (0-1) started and worked three innings.  Savanna Trueblood pitched the final four innings.

Powered by five home runs, Shelbyville softball pushed its win streak to nine straight Tuesday with a 13-7 victory at Connersville.

Karissa Hamilton hit two home runs and Addisenn Weaver, Katie Mathies and Kylie McIver each had one to lead the Class 4A, No. 14 Golden Bears (12-1).

Hailey Pogue went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing 15 hits over seven innings and seven runs, only four were earned. She had four strikeouts.

Hamilton, a University of Kentucky recruit, also had two doubles in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. She scored three runs and had three runs batted in.

Mathies was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

McIver was the only other Golden Bear to have at least two hits.

Shelbyville scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings before scoring six in the fifth to take a 9-0 lead.

The Spartans (5-6) scored all their runs in the final three innings.

Morgan Stieneker celebrated hitting her first career home run Sunday by hitting a second one in the second game of a doubleheader.

Olney Central College’s starting third baseman and Shelbyville graduate, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and her first-ever home run in a 7-4 loss at Southwestern Illinois College.

Stieneker followed that up with a 2-for-4 performance and another home run in an 8-5 victory.

Olney Central added two more wins Monday over Shawnee Community College to improve to 15-21 this season. Stieneker was 2-for-5 at the plate in the doubleheader.

Fellow Shelbyville graduate Erica Henry smashed her first collegiate home run for Olney, a grand slam, on April 14 in a 7-5 loss to Wabash Valley College. Henry also pitched two innings in the loss, allowing one hit and striking out three.

The Shelbyville graduate was 0-for-1 in a pinch-hitting performance Friday in Duke University’s 11-0 loss to Wake Forest.

The Blue Devils are 17-16 this season.

Natalie Weber

The Shelbyville graduate was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in a 10-3 win for Franklin College at Bluffton Saturday.

The Grizzlies lost game one of the doubleheader, 5-0.

On Sunday, Franklin College returned to Behrens Field and defeated Rose-Hulman, 11-3. Weber was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.

The Fightin’ Engineers rebounded to win game two, 10-5. Weber was 1-for-4 with another double.

The Grizzlies are 12-8 this season (3-3 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference).

Logan Young

The Shelbyville graduate was 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs Saturday in Indiana University South Bend’s 6-5 win over Trinity Christian. Young also pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the victory.

The Titans (16-18, 12-7 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) opened the three-game series Friday with a 22-2 victory.

Game one of the doubleheader Saturday went to IU South Bend, 14-7. Young was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

TeAnn Bringle

The Shelbyville graduate was 1-for-8 for Indiana State in a three-game series at Bradley in Peoria, Illinois.

Bringle was 1-for-3 in Friday’s 7-6 loss. She was 0-for-5 combined in Saturday’s 3-1 loss and 5-4 win.

The Sycamores are 15-19 this season (8-7 Missouri Valley Conference).

Zaleeya Martin

The Shelbyville graduate finished 21^st for Hanover College Saturday in the 100 meters at the Gibson Invitational hosted by Indiana State University.

Martin’s time of 12.7 seconds was a personal best.

Kyler Schalk

The Triton Central graduate finished third in the long jump (19 feet, six inches) and 14^th in the 100 (11.84 seconds) for Wabash College Saturday in the DePauw Quad Meet in Greencastle, Ind.

Erin Diemer

The Shelbyville graduate won the women’s pole vault competition at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.

Diemer cleared 12 feet, 5.5 inches for Southern Illinois University to capture her first outdoor win of the season.

Chandler Martin

The Shelbyville graduate placed sixth in the high jump (6-2.75) and 10^th in the javelin (127-5) for the University of Indianapolis at the 114^th annual Little State Championships held at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marian, Indiana.

The Greyhounds won the men’s team title.

Kaden Branam

The Waldron graduate cleared 6-4.75 to place fifth in the high jump event for Indiana Tech at the Little State Championships, which is a non-Division I event.

Madisen Hinderliter

The Shelbyville graduate finished 13^th in the discus (32.6 meters) and 16^th in the hammer throw (38.57 meters) for St. Francis University (Ind.) in the Little State Championships.

Indiana Pacers forward JaKarr Sampson has been suspended one game without pay for headbutting San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills, and Mills and Spurs forward Rudy Gay have each been fined for their roles in an on-court altercation, it was announced today by Kiki VanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

The incident began when Sampson and Mills were battling for rebounding position. It continued to the next possession when Mills made contact with Sampson and Sampson shoved Mills. Sampson then furthered the altercation by aggressively confronting and headbutting Mills. Sampson’s actions resulted in a Flagrant Foul 2 and an automatic ejection.

Mills received a technical foul and has been fined $25,000 for his role in the altercation. Gay also received a technical foul and has been fined $20,000 for escalating the incident by shoving Sampson.

The incident occurred with 9:32 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Spurs’ 109-94 win over the Pacers on April 19 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Sampson will serve his suspension tonight when Indiana faces the Oklahoma City Thunder at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Shelbyville's trip to North Vernon for golf action last Saturday was more eventful than just the competition the Golden Bears faced.  It was an unexpected find on the golf course.

On Friday, a pilot made an emergency landing on the golf course after departing nearby North Vernon Municipal Airport.  A mechanical issue forced the landing of the single-engine Cessna.  The pilot was uninjured.

Shelbyville golf coach Jason Bass said the plane certainly added to the day.

Bass said the plane looked like it belonged there.

Class 4A, No. 14-ranked Shelbyville got off to a slow start Monday against visiting Greenwood then took control with a 9-run fourth inning.

The Woodmen built a 3-0 lead off starting pitcher Brooke Lipperd but the Golden Bears responded with a three-run third to tie the score once again.

After a scoreless top of the fourth, Shelbyville posted nine runs in its half of the inning and tacked on two more in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory, 14-4.

Lipperd allowed five hits and three walks but just four earned runs to get the Golden Bears to 11-1 this season.

Addisenn Weaver, Maddie Campton, Karissa Hamilton and Cheyenne Eads each had home runs in the game. Campton, Hamilton, Kylee Edwards and Katie Mathies had doubles.

Shelbyville pounded out 13 hits total with six different players having two hits.

With a statement victory Saturday over previously No. 1 ranked Yorktown (Class 3A), the Golden Bears rose five spots in the state coaches poll that was released Tuesday.

Roncalli remains No. 1 in 4A ahead of Lake Central, Crown Point, Mooresville and New Palestine. Rounding out the top five are Center Grove, Bedford North Lawrence, Decatur Central, Castle and Brownsburg.

The next five includes Jasper, Franklin Central, Penn, Shelbyville and Leo. Pendleton Heights is 16^th, Mt. Vernon is 20^th, and Shelbyville’s opponent Thursday, Franklin, is 22^nd.

Yorktown dropped to No. 4 in 3A behind Edgewood, Guerin Catholic and Benton Central but ahead of Danville, Kankakee Valley, Bellmont, Frankfort, Tri-West Hendricks and Northwestern.

Tecumseh is No. 1 in 2A ahead of Union County, Boone Grove, Alexandria Monroe, North Posey, Eastern Hancock, Pioneer, Eastern (Greentown), Whitko and Evansville Mater Dei.

Lanesville tops the Class A poll with Loogootee, Tri, Hauser, Clay City, West Central, Caston, Borden, South Central (Union Mills) and North Miami completing the top 10.

Triton Central’s Oliver Gearlds collected the medalist honor Monday at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course in Greenfield but the host, New Palestine, earned the team victory, 188-211.

Gearlds carded 37 for nine holes to lead Triton Central. Evan Uhls followed with a 46. Maxwell Ray (61) and Caleb Anderson (67) completed the Tigers’ scorecard. Hendrix Davidson posted 70.

All five New Palestine golfers shot 47 or better led by Braeden Baker’s 44. Matt Burada carded 45, Evan Griffith and Gus Wallen each shot 46 and Sammy Chifalo shot 47.

Triton Central returns to the golf course Wednesday to face Eastern Hancock.

Fourteen players have been selected for the 2021 IndyStar Indiana Boys All-Stars, All-Stars game director Mike Broughton announced Monday (April 19).
           

Those chosen to the team will play three games in June -- one exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars as well as home-and-home contests against the Kentucky All-Stars.

Caleb Furst of Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian was named winner of the Indiana Mr. Basketball award on Friday (April 16). Furst will be joined by 13 other players on the 2021 Indiana Boys All-Star team. The coaches for the 2021 All-Stars will be the same staff that was to guide the All-Stars a year ago, as the 2020 All-Star events were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The head coach will be Ryan Osborn of Carmel. He will be assisted by Mark Detweiler of Delta and Nate Hawkins of Heritage Hills.

The Junior-Senior exhibition game is set for June 9 at Brownsburg High School. The first game against Kentucky will be June 11 at the Owensboro SportsCenter in Owensboro, Ky. The final game against Kentucky will be June 12 at Southport Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The games in Indianapolis are at Southport because Bankers Life Fieldhouse is unavailable this summer because of another phase of renovations that will be occurring there.

All three dates will be doubleheaders with the IndyStar Indiana Girls All-Stars.

The Indiana Junior All-Stars will play just one game this year -- June 9 against the seniors. There are no Junior All-Star games against Kentucky this year.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana Boys All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls'  portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996. The All-Star senior boys have played Kentucky in all but three years since 1940 -- 1943 (World War II), 1944 (World War II) and 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic). The All-Star senior girls have played Kentucky every year since 1976, except 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic). 

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is a title sponsor.

Mr. Basketball is selected through a balloting process of coaches and media overseen by game organizers from the IBCA. The remainder of the team is finalized by Broughton after observing numerous games and events throughout the season, conferring with coaches, school officials and media across the state. Broughton also reviews votes submitted by coaches and media who each could recommend up to 10 players.

Southwestern High School’s baseball team climbed to No. 2 in the Class A state coaches poll released today.

The Spartans were 5-0 heading into Saturday’s two-game set at South Dearborn against the host Knights and Class A, No. 1 Oldenburg Academy.

Southwestern never got on track, losing to South Dearborn 13-2, and Oldenburg Academy 17-3.

Southwestern will attempt to get back in the win column today when it hosts Greenwood Christian.

Following the Spartans in the Class A poll are Kouts, Riverton Parke, Rossville, Fremont, Daleville, Shakamak, Wes-Del and Borden.

Monroe Central sits on top of the 2A poll followed by Wapahani, Lafayette Central Catholic, Cascade, Clinton Prairie, South Adams, Eastern (Greentown), Centerville, University and Forest Park.

Lebanon is the leader in 3A ahead of West Vigo, Hanover Central, Silver Creek, Western, Peru, Franklin County, Evansville Memorial, Leo and Madison.

Columbus North is No. 1 in 4A for the second straight week. The Bull Dogs are followed in the rankings by Westfield, Evansville North, Cathedral, Center Grove, Castle, Homestead, Zionsville, Hobart and Carmel.

Shelbyville softball added two more Hoosier Heritage Conference wins to its record to stay atop the standings.

Following a dominant 14-2 win Friday over Delta, Shelbyville knocked off Class 3A, No. 1 Yorktown Saturday, 7-2.

Cheyenne Eads went the distance in the circle, allowing three hits while striking out six to improve to 5-1 this season for the Golden Bears (10-1, 4-0 HHC).

Karissa Hamilton (left) smashed her 11th home run of the season and Maddie Campton collected her third for a Shelbyville squad that defeated Class 3A, No. 1 Yorktown Saturday.

Karissa Hamilton delivered her team-leading 11^th home run of the season and team-high 27^th run batted in. The University of Kentucky commit also had two doubles on a 3-for-4 day that raised her batting average to .727 this season.

Maddie Campton blasted her third home run of the season and Katie Mathies, Addisenn Weaver and Kyle Edwards each had doubles for a Shelbyville squad that is hitting .425 this season with 29 doubles and 30 home runs.

Kaylyn Cochran took the loss for Yorktown (5-2, 0-2 HHC).

The Golden Bears lead the HHC with a 4-0 mark. Mount Vernon follows at 1-0. Pendleton Heights is 1-1 ahead of Delta (1-2), Yorktown (0-2) and New Castle (0-2). New Palestine and Greenfield-Central have their first HHC contests this week.

Shelbyville has four games scheduled this week starting today when Greenwood (3-4) comes to town.

The Golden Bears are at Connersville (4-5) Tuesday  before closing out the week hosting Franklin (5-2) Thursday and Columbus East (2-7) Friday.

Franklin has its own Kentucky recruit in standout pitcher Izzy Harrison. She is 3-0 this season with 61 strikeouts in 26 innings of work.

Southwestern beat county rival Waldron 13-2 in 5 innings Thursday.

The Spartans Anick Hartsell pitched the first three innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 5, giving up one run.  Ethan Wendling pitched the last two innings.

Southwestern broke the game open in the second inning, scoring eight runs, in large part to four extra base hits in a row by Jordan Jones, Hartsell, Wendling, and Christian DeArmitt. 

Matthew Clements led SW with 3 RBI.

Bryce Yarling took the loss for Waldron.

Southwestern and Waldron play at Waldron Friday.

Caleb Furst has earned the top individual award in Indiana high school boys basketball.

Furst, a 6-10 senior forward from Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, has been named IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball for 2021 in online voting of media and boys’ varsity coaches conducted by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and All-Star game director Mike Broughton, it was announced Friday.

The Mr. Basketball result allows Furst to join Lawrence North senior Jayla Smith to wear No. 1 jerseys for the Indiana All-Stars in their annual series with Kentucky. Smith's selection as 2021 Indiana Miss Basketball, after a vote of media and girls' varsity coaches, was announced last month.

 The Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball awards go to the respective top boys’ basketball senior and top girls’ basketball senior in the state. The Mr. Basketball award is part of the IndyStar Indiana All-Star program that dates to 1939. The Miss Basketball award, along with the girls All-Stars, was added to the All-Star program in 1976.

The remainder of the 2021 Boys All-Star team is expected to be announced next week. The full 2021 Girls All-Star team also was announced last month.

Furst earned the boys' top honor after being named on 73 ballots submitted to Broughton during late March and early April. Trey Kaufman-Renn of Silver Creek was runner-up in the voting with 47 votes. Luke Brown of Blackford placed third with 40 votes. Other finalists were Brooks Barnhizer of Lafayette Jeff, Shamar Avance of Lawrence North and J.R. Konieczny of South Bend St. Joseph. 

A Purdue University recruit, Furst averaged 21.4 points, 14.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.2 blocks as a senior while leading Blackhawk Christian to a 28-3 season that included the Class 2A state championship. He converted 64.0 percent on field goals (260-of-406) and 84.2 percent on free throws (133-of-158) as the Braves captured their second state crown in three seasons. They also captured the Class A trophy in 2019 and no title was determined in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic that stopped the tournament after sectional play.

For his career, Furst totaled a school records of 2,067 points, 1,254 rebounds and 213 blocked shots while Blackhawk Christian amassed an aggregate 105-11 record over his four seasons (26-3, 28-2, 23-3 and 28-3). He averaged 18.7 points and 8.9 rebounds as a sophomore and followed with norms of 22.1 points and 13.4 rebounds as a junior. Furst is the first Mr. Basketball winner and the just second player to become an Indiana All-Star from his school, joining Russell Byrd in 2010.

Furst also is the 12th Mr. Basketball recipient -- but just the second in the past 30 years -- bound for Purdue. He joins Joe Sexson (1952), Willie Eison (1955), Dennis Brady (1964), Billy Keller (1965), Rick Mount (1966), Kyle Macy (1975), Dan Palombizio (1981), Troy Lewis (1984), Woody Austin (1988), Glenn Robinson (1991) and Caleb Swanigan (2015) as Mr. Basketball winners who joined the Boilermakers.

In voting announced on March 19, Smith captured the Indiana Miss Basketball award for 2021 after receiving 28 votes in balloting that occurred in late February and early March. Ariana Wiggins of Heritage Christian was second with 22 votes. Ally Becki of Brownsburg was third with 21 votes.

Smith, also a Purdue signee, averaged 19.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 4.8 steals in leading Lawrence North to a 19-7 record as a senior. That came after the 5-11 guard averaged 14.7 points and propelled the Wildcats to the 2020 Class 4A state championship with a 26-4 record as a junior. The previous season, Smith averaged 16.1 points and helped Lawrence North finish as Class 4A state runner-up with a 22-7 slate.

Smith is her school's first Indiana Miss Basketball honoree and the 14th girl from Lawrence North to be chosen to the All-Star team. LN girls chosen All-Star to previous All-Star teams were Kelly Miller (1983), Reicina Russell (2005), Azjah Bass (2007), Felisha Johnson (2008), CoCo Moore (2012), Destiny Washington (2014), Ana Owens (2014), Lamina Cooper (2015), Lauren Dickerson (2016), Ae'Rianna Harris (2016), Destiny Perkins (2017), Kristian Young (2020) and Katie Davidson (2020).

Lawrence North also has had 15 boys named as All-Stars over the years dating to Reed Crafton in 1985. The Wildcats have had one Mr. Basketball winner in Greg Oden in 2006.

Smith is the 10th Miss Basketball honoree to be headed to Purdue. Previous winners to join the Boilermakers are Sharon Versyp (1984), Jennifer Jacoby (1991), Stephanie White (1995), Kelly Komara (1998), Katie Gearlds (2003), Jodi Howell (2005), Brittany Rayburn (2008), Courtney Moses (2010) and Karissa McLaughlin (2017).

Powered by a pair of Katie Mathies home runs and a complete-game performance from Hailey Pogue in the circle, Shelbyville softball collected its fifth-straight win Thursday and improved to 8-1 overall with a 14-1 victory over Rushville.

Pogue scattered four hits over five innings of work and struck out eight.

Mathies went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and five runs batted in. The senior now has seven home runs this season and 22 RBIs.

Maddie Campton had three hits and two RBIs.

Karissa Hamilton bashed her team-leading 10^th home run of the season. She also leads the team in RBIs with 23.

Kylee Edwards and Addisenn Weaver each had two hits.

Kara Chandler took the loss for Rushville (3-3). Briley Munchel had two of the Lions’ four hits.

The Golden Bears returns to Hoosier Heritage Conference play today when Delta (4-5, 1-1 HHC)

visits. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Shelbyville travels to Class 3A, No. 1-ranked Yorktown (5-1, 0-1 HHC).

The Shelbyville Golden Bears golf team lost to #13 Franklin Community at The Legends Golf Club.

Franklin won 155-198 led by match medalist Damon Dickey who shot a (-1) 35.

The Golden Bears were led by Senior Ethan Apsley, who shot a 48. Teammates Eli Baker carded a 49, Matthew Bunton - 50 and Nolan Chaney - 51.

The Golden Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to St. Anne's Golf Course for the Jennings County Invitational.  

Indiana High School Athletic Association commissioner Paul Neidig announced Wednesday the host sites for two spring state tournaments.

Following conversations with the IHSAA Executive Committee, the 2021 Boys, Girls and Unified Track and Field State Finals will be held at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.

The boys meet will be contested on Friday, June 4, while the unified meet and the girls meet are set for Saturday, June 5.

The Softball State Finals will be played at Center Grove High School in Greenwood on Friday, June 11, and Saturday June 12.

The track meets had been planned for Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington while the softball championship games had been scheduled for Purdue University’s Bittinger Stadium in West Lafayette.

Both universities confirmed last month they would be unable to host the IHSAA events with spectators on the scheduled dates.

Oliver Gearlds was the only golfer to break 40 Wednesday at Deer Creek Golf Course to earn medalist honors for Triton Central.

Gearlds’ 39 led the Tigers to a 203-241 victory over Cascade.

Also for Triton Central, Evan Uhls shot 44, Griffin Sego posted 56 and Maxwell Ray completed the scorecard with 64. TC’s fifth golfer, Hendrix Davidson, shot 66.

Evan Franklin led Cascade with 51. Henry Tucker (55), Mason Rausch (68) and Tyler Bush (67) rounded out Cascade’s scorecard.

Triton Central returns to action Monday against New Palestine at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course in Greenfield.

In only the second day of action for the 2021 season at Indiana Grand, jockey Orlando Mojica hit win 2,500 aboard Sky Judge in Wednesday afternoon’s seventh race. It was Mojica’s only mount of the day and only his third start of the season thus far in Indiana.

“I thought I was going to get it at Oaklawn (Arkansas) and I came really close, winning my 2,499^th race there,” said Mojica, who has several leading jockey titles to his name at Indiana Grand. “This is a very exciting day for me. I’m a very blessed guy.”

Mojica won the jockey title at Indiana Grand (Shelbyville, Ind.) during the inaugural season in 2003 and then returned for back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009. The multiple Graded Stakes winning jockey has garnered success at nearly every racetrack he has ridden at, including Canterbury Park in Minnesota, where he won his 2,000^th race in 2016.

The Puerto Rican native also won leading rider titles at Ellis Park (Henderson, Ky.) and at Hoosier Park (Anderson, Ind.) before all Thoroughbred racing was moved to Indiana Grand in 2013.

Mojica also won his 1,000^th career race at Indiana Grand. He is still ranked third on the list of all-time winning jockeys at Indiana Grand. Since his riding career began in 2000, he has ridden in more than 17,700 races and accumulated in excess of $45 million in purse earnings.

The 19^th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing extends through Nov. 8. Live racing is conducted at 2:25 p.m. Monday through Wednesday with first post on Thursdays set at 3:25 p.m.

Mount Vernon defeated Triton Central 5-0 Tuesday in match play format at Arrowhead Golf Course in Greenfield.

Mount Vernon’s Sam McWilliams was medalist with the low round of 34.

Oliver Gearlds led Triton Central with a 38.

Also for Triton Central, Evan Uhls carded 46, Griffin Sego had 55, Maxwell Ray posted 58 and Caleb Anderson shot 69.

Aden Cappalletti had 39 for Mount Vernon. Kyran Maxfield (41), Sam Bridenthal (43) and Asher Cotton (48) completed the Marauders’ scorecard.

Logan Young’s grand slam Monday was not enough to keep Indiana University South Bend’s baseball team from being swept in a three-game series against Olivet Nazarene.

Young, a Shelbyville graduate, went 3-for-5 at the plate in the series finale with two runs scored and four runs batted in and he pitched a scoreless inning of relief in an 11-9 loss.

Olivet Nazarene defeated the Titans (13-18) 3-2 and 8-4 Friday in the opening two games of the series. Young went 2-for-7 combined in the losses.

TeAnn Bringle

The Shelbyville graduate had a pair of hits in Indiana State softball’s three-game sweep of Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Sycamores won game one Saturday, 12-8. Bringle went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. She was 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in game two, an 11-3 victory.

On Sunday, ISU (14-17) won 6-4. Bringle was 0-for-3 but was hit by a pitch and scored.

Franklin College’s softball team produced two wins at Rose-Hulman Thursday. The Grizzlies won game one, 6-1, and completed the sweep in game two, 6-4.

Weber, a Shelbyville graduate, went 5-for-8 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, and two RBIs for the Grizzlies (10-6).

The Shelbyville graduate went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored Friday in Olney Central College’s 12-8 loss to Lake Land College.

The Shelbyville graduate carded 18-hole rounds of 111 and 103 for a two-day total of 214 (+70) for Earlham College in the Rose-Hulman Invitational Saturday and Sunday at The Trophy Club in Lebanon, Indiana.

The Shelbyville graduate finished 55^th for Indiana Tech in the 800 meters (2:13.05) Saturday in the Warrior Opener in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Shelbyville graduate, competing for St. Francis (Ind.), finished 14^th in the hammer throw (121 feet) and seventh in the discus (105-1) Saturday at the Warrior Opener in Fort Wayne.

Chandler Martin

The Shelbyville graduate won the high jump competition with a best clearance of 1.90 meters Saturday for the University of Indianapolis at the Jim Vargo Invitational hosted by Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.

Martin also finished third in the javelin (36.77 meters).

The Southwestern graduate placed fourth in the high jump event (1.80 meters) for the University of Indianapolis at the Jim Vargo Invitational.

The Triton Central graduate finished fifth in the 100 (11.47) and fourth in the long jump (19-11.75) for Wabash College Saturday in the Wabash Invitational in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

The Waldron graduate won the discus event for Franklin College with a personal best throw of 41.69 meters Saturday in the Manchester Invitational.

The 19^th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing got underway Tuesday, April 13 with Apron Strings and Tommy Pompell winning the season opener. The Indiana bred mare was one of three winners on the card for Trainer Randy Klopp, longtime Indiana horseman and Rushville, Ind. Resident.

Apron Strings got out of the gate well and tracked Long Legged Linda and Sant Sanjur through the early stages of the five furlong sprint before pressing forward and getting the lead midway through the stretch, holding on gamely through the wire. Archie’s Girl and Manny Esquivel closed well for second followed by Bold Concept and Joe Ramos, who moved up the inside through traffic to finish third.

Owned by Spiess Stable and Klopp, Apron Strings was making her first start of 2021 since taking the winter off from racing in Indiana. The Kodiak Kowboy six-year-old mare now has five wins in 12 starts.

Klopp also greeted Tale of Fame and Jockey Joe Ramos in the winner’s circle for the third race and Tapit’s Spirit, also ridden by Ramos, for the eighth race, giving Ramos a riding double on the card.

Newcomer Jose Batista also scored two wins on the season opener. The Panamanian native recently finished 10^th in the jockey standings at Tampa Bay Downs and moved his tack to Indiana for the 2021 racing season. Batista connected with Gran Rojo in the second race followed by Day in the Country in the fifth race.

One Quarter Horse race was carded on the first program of 2021 with L.D. Martinez and Anthony Cunningham winning with Beach Shakin. The Indiana bred son of Escondido Beach scored his first career win in the race, his first of 2021.

A sizeable crowd was trackside for the season opener. Wagering for the nine-race card topped $1.7 million, outperforming opening day in April 2019 by nearly $400,000.

He was our biggest fan and our most loving critic, and he personified Pacers basketball for generations of Hoosier families. Most importantly, though, Slick and Nancy are our family, and his passing leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of everyone associated with this organization. We keep the entire Leonard family in our prayers, and we recognize and honor Slick for what he meant to our state both on and off the court.”

Bobby “Slick” Leonard:

A Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee in 2014, Bobby “Slick” Leonard spent more than 50 years as a part of the Pacers organization, both as a championship-winning coach and a broadcaster. As Pacers’ head coach from 1968-1980, he won 529 games and three ABA championships and was later voted by a national sportswriters and broadcasters association as the ABA’s All-Time Coach.

Named one of Indiana’s “50 Greatest Players” and a two-time All-American at Indiana University, Slick was captain of the Hoosiers’ 1953 NCAA championship team and Big Ten Championship teams in 1953 and ‘54. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56 before playing seven years in the NBA with the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers and was named an All Star in 1963.

In addition to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, Slick is enshrined in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Indiana Sports Writers and Broadcasters Hall of Fame and was the first person inducted into the Indiana University Sports Hall of Fame. He was also honored as a member of Indiana University’s All-Century Basketball Team

Finally, Slick is one of just six individuals in Pacers history to have a banner raised in his honor. Hanging from the rafters of Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the banner honors his 529 victories as coach of the Pacers and his contributions to the game.

Slick and his wife, Nancy, have five children, 12 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Shelbyville softball’s power surge continued Monday in Pendleton when a four home run performance spurred the Golden Bears to a 9-6 victory over the Arabians.

Addisenn Weaver had two runs as part of a three-hit game and Katie Mathies belted her fifth homer of the season. Kiley McIver collected her third bomb as the Golden Bears improved to 7-1 this year and 2-0 versus Hoosier Heritage Conference opponents.

Cheyenne Eads improved to 4-1 in the pitcher’s circle with a complete-game performance that included seven strikeouts.

Pendleton Heights (4-3, 1-1 HHC) got home runs from Kieli Ryan, Caroline DeRolf, Grace Scott and Bo Shelton but it was not enough to keep up with a Shelbyville squad that has 25 home runs now.

The strong start to the season has not helped the Golden Bears’ ranking in the most recent state coaches poll.

Shelbyville is ranked 19^th in Class 4A this week, six spots lower than Pendleton Heights.

Roncalli is the new No. 1 in 4A. New Palestine is fifth and Center Grove is sixth.

Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon, both HHC foes for Shelbyville, also received votes.

Tri is ranked No. 1 in Class A. Lutheran is third and Hauser is tied for fourth.

Tecumseh is the top-ranked team in 2A. Speedway is eighth and Eastern Hancock is 10^th.

Edgewood and Yorktown are tied for the top spot in 3A. Cathedral is 16^th followed by Greensburg.

The Golden Bears are back in action Thursday when Rushville (2-2) comes to town.

The 19^th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing gets underway Tuesday, April 13. Tagged with the theme, “Run for the Money,” an added bonus will be offered on three exotic wagers with reduced takeout rates in 2021.

Returning this season is the Pick 5 featuring one of the lowest takeout rates in the industry at 11.99 percent. The wager is offered on the final five Thoroughbred races daily with a 50-cent minimum wager. For days when the Pick 5 goes without being hit, a carryover will ensue moving to the next Thoroughbred racing program. The Pick 5, which has had carryovers top the $100,000 mark in the past, is not offered on all-Quarter Horse racing days.

“Our Pick 5 really gained momentum last year,” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing. “We captured a lot of attention from racing fans across the nation with the 11.99 percent takeout, one of the lowest rates out there. It is very appealing to those seeking value on wagering options.”

Joining the Pick 5 with reduced takeouts is the Pick 4 and the Straight Fire 6 (Jackpot Pick 6), which will offer a rate of 15 percent each beginning in 2021. The Pick 4 is provided twice per racing program on the first race and then on the last four Thoroughbred races daily. The minimum wager for the Pick 4 is 50 cents.

The Straight Fire 6 (Jackpot Pick 6) moves into its second year of operation in 2021. With a 20-cent minimum, the wager begins on the third race daily. If one unique ticket is not submitted on the Straight Fire 6, then a carryover moves to the next Thoroughbred racing program and continues until one unique ticket is recorded as a winner. The carryover got up to more than $140,000 last year during its first season.

The 2021 Thoroughbred racing season will be highlighted by the 27^th running of the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby set for Wednesday, July 8. The afternoon card will feature six stakes with purses for the day nearing the $1 million mark.

The 2021 Quarter Horse season will feature six all-Quarter Horse racing programs set for special Saturday cards. Action will be held June 5, July 3, July 24, Aug. 14, Sept. 4, and Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. Both the top Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses in the State of Indiana will be featured during a special Indiana Champions Day Saturday, Oct. 30 with a first post of 12 p.m. Between the two breeds, eight stakes will be on the card with purses nearing the $1 million mark.

With a pair of Mid-Hoosier Conference victories over South Decatur, Southwestern’s baseball team remained in the state rankings for Class A programs.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 this season with a 9-2 victory over South Decatur Friday and a 1-0 win in eight innings Saturday.

In the most recent state coaches poll, Southwestern is ranked sixth behind Daleville, Oldenburg Academy, Kouts, Riverton Parke, and Washington Township.

Rounding out the top 10 are Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Shakamak, Fremont and Wes-Del.

Monroe Central, Wapahani and Lafayette Central Catholic are the top three teams respectively in 2A.

Silver Creek is No. 1 in 3A followed by West Vigo and Lebanon.

Columbus North takes over the top spot in 4A with an 8-0 start to the season. Westfield, Evansville North, Cathedral and Center Grove complete the top five.

Shelbyville is scheduled to play at Columbus North Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Shelbyville softball bashed 10 home runs to collect three victories Friday and Saturday.

Following the Golden Bears’ first loss of the season Thursday, Shelbyville rebounded to defeat potential sectional opponent East Central Friday night, 7-4.

Brooke Lipperd (1-0) went five innings, allowing five hits, four runs and collecting three strikeouts to earn the win. Hailey Pogue pitched two scoreless innings in relief to push Shelbyville’s record to 4-1.

Kylee Edwards, Karissa Hamilton and Katie Mathies each had two hits in the victory. Mathies, Edwards and Maddie Campton each had home runs.

Five more softballs left the Shelbyville softball facility Saturday morning as the Golden Bears routed Hoosier Heritage Conference softball rival New Castle, 18-3, in game one of a doubleheader.

Hamilton smashed three of the home runs, and Mathies and Campton homered.

Cheyenne Eads (3-1) earned the win in the circle going five innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven.

Shelbyville collected 17 hits, with Hamilton and Mathies each having four. Edwards went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases.

The Golden Bears continued the offensive onslaught in game two, winning 12-5.

Hamilton crushed her team-leading ninth home run of the season and pushed her season runs batted in total to 22.

Pogue (2-0) got the start in the circle and earned the win, allowing three hits while striking out six. Lipped worked the final two innings to seal the victory.

The Golden Bears, now 6-1, are hitting .429 as a team with 21 home runs and 16 doubles.

Mathies leads the way with a .750 average, with three doubles, three triples, four home runs and 14 RBIs.

Hamilton follows with a .727 average.

Edwards is hitting .583 with three doubles, three home runs and a team-leading 16 runs scored.

Six more Golden Bears are hitting at least .300.

Shelbyville continues its HHC schedule today with a road trip to Pendleton Heights (4-2, 1-0 HHC). The Arabians are averaging 14 runs per game this season.

Triton Central High School’s basketball programs will host summer camps in 2021.

The Lady Tiger Basketball Camp, under the direction of head coach Bryan Graham, is offering camps for kindergarten through fourth grade from May 3 to May 6; and grades 5-8 from June 7 through June 10.

Camp registration fee is $35 for each camp. Deadline for the K-4^th grade camp is April 28. Deadline for the grades 5-8 camp is May 26.

The camp environment will offer participants the opportunity to learn and improve on fundamentals.

Each player will receive a T-shirt and a basketball.

Triton Central High School boys basketball coach Kyle Ballard is offering camps for boys in K-4^th grade from May 17 through May 20, and boys in grades 5-8 from June 1 through June 4.

Registration fee is $40 for each camp and due by May 10 for K-4^th graders and May 24 for those in grades 5-8.

Campers will receive instruction from TC boys basketball coaches and players in dribbling, passing, shooting, scoring, and defense.

All participants will receive a T-shirt and a basketball.

Columbus North used a five-run fifth inning to erase a 5-1 Shelbyville lead and held on for a 9-5 victory Wednesday.

Kiley McIver’s second home run of the season helped the Golden Bears build a 4-run lead but the Bull Dogs erupted in the fifth inning.

Columbus North (3-1), a potential sectional opponent for Shelbyville, added three more runs in the sixth to get Maddi Rutan the win in the circle. She pitched four innings in relief of Meghan Waggoner and allowed one earned run while striking out five.

Cheyenne Eads (2-1) took the loss for Shelbyville (3-1). She pitched into the sixth inning, allowing all nine runs on 10 hits while striking out seven.

Hailey Pogue closed out the game, allowing two hits and no runs.

McIver and Katie Mathies were the only Golden Bears with two hits in the loss. Mathies and Kylee Edwards each had doubles.

Shelbyville is back in action today at home against another potential sectional opponent in East Central (3-0).

Nine races will kick off the 19^th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing Tuesday, April 13. The program features eight Thoroughbred and one Quarter Horse race with a first post time of 2:25 p.m.

Featured on the card is a $37,000 Indiana sired allowance in the sixth race. The eight-horse field brings the return of several Indiana winners from last season, including Sudden Shift from the Bob Gorham Stable. The three-year-old Unbridled Express gelding finished second in his final start of 2020 in the $75,000 Indiana Futurity. DeShawn Parker, 2020 leading rider at Indiana Grand, will guide Sudden Shift from post seven.

Parker earned his first leading jockey title at Indiana Grand in 2020 with 106 trips to the winner’s circle. The jockey with more than 5,800 career wins adds the title from Indiana Grand to his impressive resume with numerous leading jockey titles from Mountaineer Park. Joining Parker in the race for leading jockey in 2021 is Marcelino Pedroza, Jr., who won his second leading jockey title at Indiana Grand in 2019. Pedroza was sidelined for most of the 2020 season due to injury.

In the trainer category, Genaro Garcia returns seeking his fifth straight title. He topped the standings last year with 43 wins over the shortened 96-day racing season. His stable, Southwest Racing, teamed up with Steve Lewis last year to also win leading owner honors.

The 120-day racing season extends through Monday, Nov. 8, 2021. The stakes schedule has been expanded to include several new stakes, bringing the total count to 40 with purses exceeding $3.6 million. Highlighting the stakes season is the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby and the Grade 3 $200,000 Indiana Oaks set for Wednesday, July 7. Also featured is the state’s richest turf race, the $150,000 Caesars Stakes (Listed) set for Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Triton Central with boys and girls wins over Scecina

TeAnn Bringle had four hits in a pair of Indiana State softball wins at Valparaiso.

Bringle, a Shelbyville graduate, went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in Friday in a 10-0 victory over the Crusaders.

On Saturday, Bringle was again 2-for-3 and belted her second home run of the season to lead the Sycamores to an 8-2 victory that completed a three-game sweep of their Missouri Valley Conference rival.

Indiana State split a doubleheader Tuesday at Behrens Field in Terre Haute with Eastern Illinois.

The Sycamores won game won, 5-0, but lost game two, 4-0, to fall to 11-17 this season.

Natalie Weber

The Shelbyville graduate was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Franklin College Sunday in a 4-3 win over 13^th-ranked Transylvania.

The Grizzlies lost game two, 13-4. Weber had a double and scored a run in the loss.

Franklin is 8-6 this season.

Logan Young

The Shelbyville graduate was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Indiana University South Bend’s baseball team Saturday in game one of a doubleheader against St. Francis (Ill.).

The Titans won 12-6 but lost the series finale later Saturday, 6-5. Young was 1-for-4 in that contest.

On Friday, IU South Bend opened the three-game series with a 9-4 victory. Young was 0-for-4 at the plate with a walk and pitched the final inning to close out the win.

The Titans are 13-15 this season.

Collin Miltz

The Shelbyville graduate helped Marian University’s 400-meter relay team to a third-place finish Saturday at the George Glass Invitational hosted by Taylor University in Upland, Indiana.

Miltz teamed with Charles Crayton III, Matthew Hamer and Chase Maxey to complete the event in 42.73 seconds.

Madisen Hinderliter

The Shelbyville graduate placed 18^th in the discus (98 feet, eight inches) and 18^th in the hammer throw (113-8) Saturday for St. Francis (Ind.) at the George Glass Invitational.

Hanover Invitational

Shelbyville graduate Zaleeya Martin won the 100 (12.77), 200 (27.35) and was part of the 400 relay team that took first place for Hanover College Saturday in Hanover, Indiana.

Martin also finished third in the long jump (15.5.5).

Waldron graduate Dalen Williams earned his first outdoor meet victory for Franklin College after taking first place in the javelin (145-6).

Williams also placed runner-up in the discus (131-0) and 12^th in the shot put (35-10.75).

Southwestern graduate Taylor Tatlock also won the javelin event for Franklin College. She threw a career best 113-8 to earn first-place points.

Tatlock also finished third in the discus (108-7) and 12^th in the hammer throw (76-9).

Shelbyville graduate Jill Anspaugh finished seventh for Franklin College in the 1,500 (5:53.11) and eighth in the 800 (2:44.64).

Hoosier Basketball Magazine's Top 60 Senior Workout is highlighted by 13 players who participated in the 2021 IHSAA State Finals on Saturday, April 3rd including seven state champions— Brycen Graber and Curt Hopf (Class A - Barr-Reeve),  Zane Burke and Caleb Furst (AA - Fort Wayne Blackhawk), Kooper Jacobi and Trey Kaufman-Renn (AAA - Silver Creek) and Brian Waddell (AAAA - Carmel). Selected from runner-up teams are Cale and Cole Wireman (Class A - Kouts), Connor Davis (AA - Parke Heritage), Blake Davison (AAA - Leo) along with Shamar Avance and DJ Hughes (AAAA - Lawrence North).

Unfortunately, due to spring break conflicts a few of these players are selected, but unable to attend. They include Davison and future Purdue Boilermakers Furst and Kaufman-Renn.

The top two scorers in the state are also featured in the Top 60 Workout. They are Jalen Blackmon, Marion (33.5 ppg) who will attend Divison I Grand Canyon and Brooks Barnhizer, Lafayette Jeff (32.7), who will play in the Big Ten at Northwestern. Two more high scorers are also signees with the University of Notre Dame. They are JR Konieczny, South Bend St. Joe (28.6 ppg) and Blake Wesley, South Bend Riley (27.1)

More Division I talent that will be headed to in-state colleges include Payton Sparks, Winchester (Ball State) and Blake Sisley, Heritage Hills (Evansville) along with three Bulter recruits— Hughes, Lawrence North and Jayden Taylor, Perry Meridian and Pierce Thomas, Brownsburg. Other Division I players on display at the Top 60 Workout will be Jacobi, Silver Creek (Toledo), Darrell Reed, Hammond (Alabama State), Christopher Mantis, Lowell (Appalachian State), Gus Etchison, Hamilton Heights (Western Michigan), Langdon "LT" Hatton, North Harrison (William & Mary) along with three US Military Academy commits— Blake Barker, Columbus North (Army - West Point) plus Vincent Brady, Indianapolis Cathedral (Air Force Academy) and Jake Heidbreder, Floyd Central (Air Force Academy).

Statistical evaluation, game observation and statewide research were conducted throughout the season to determine Hoosier Basketball Magazine's Top 60. Two sessions of the Top 60 Senior Workout will be hosted on Sunday, April 11, 2021 by Hoosier Basketball Magazine, in conjunction with the IHSAA and the IBCA, at Marian University in Indianapolis (3200 N. Cold Spring Road).

Boys primarily from Northern and Southern Indiana will participate in the first session (1:00-3:00 pm EST). The remaining players, mostly from Central Indiana, will compete during the second session (3:30-5:30 pm EST).

Coach Steve Lynch (Brownsburg) will direct both sessions. Four other outstanding IBCA coaches— Chad Ballenger (Hamilton Heights), Chad Johnston (South Bend Adams), Rich Schelsky (Parke Heritage) and Kendall Wildey (South Decatur)— have been invited to assist with on-court coaching.

After a 3-0 start in which the team has blasted 10 home runs, Shelbyville High School’s softball program has climbed to No. 18 in the most recent state coaches poll.

Crown Point remains No. 1 in Class 4A with Roncalli, Center Grove, Decatur Central and Lake Central rounding out the top five, respectively.

Roncalli features the No. 1 recruit in the country for the Class of 2023. Pitcher Keagan Rothrock is verbally committed to play softball at the University of Florida.

Hoosier Heritage Conference rival New Palestine is ranked sixth ahead of Leo, Bedford North Lawrence, Hamilton Southeastern and Franklin Central.

Ahead of the Golden Bears in the 4A poll are Penn, Castle, Brownsburg, Avon, Franklin, Chesterton, another HHC rival in Pendleton Heights, and Mooresville.

Shelbyville has four games this week. The Golden Bears travel to Columbus North Thursday then host East Central Friday and New Castle for a doubleheader Saturday.

There are nine schools ranked or receiving votes on Shelbyville’s schedule.

Shelbyville will face Class 3A, No. 1 Yorktown on April 17 and Roncalli on May 11.

Franklin features University of Kentucky pitching recruit Izzy Harrison. The Grizzly Cubs face the Golden Bears on April 22.

Five of the eight HHC schools are receiving votes.

The state championship games will not return to Purdue University in West Lafayette in 2021.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association recently announced that this year’s state title games will be played at Center Grove High School on June 11 and June 12.

Kyle Robertson accounted for the SW win

The Class A, No. 3-ranked Southwestern Spartans open the 2021 season today against Eminence at 5:30 p.m. at Southwestern.

The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll has the Spartans ranked third behind No. 1 Daleville and No. 2 Oldenburg Academy.

The rest of the Class A poll is No. 4 Washington Township, No. 5 Kouts, No. 6 Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, No. 7 Shakamak, No. 8 Tecumseh, No. 9 South Central (Union Mills), and No. 10 Hauser.

In Class 2A, Lafayette Central Catholic tops the poll ahead of Monroe Central, South Adams, Wapahani, South Ripley, Clinton Prairie, Boone Grove, Linton-Stockton, North Posey and University.

Western leads the 3A poll ahead of South Bend St. Joseph, Silver Creek, Brebeuf, West Vigo, Edgewood, Lebanon, Southridge, New Castle and Evansville Memorial.

In the 4A poll, Westfield is ranked No. 1 ahead of Columbus North, Zionsville, Lake Central, Center Grove, Evansville North, Cathedral, Carmel, Penn and Andrean.

Shelbyville smashed seven home runs Saturday to sweep a doubleheader at Jennings County.

The Golden Bears opened the day with a 16-0 shutout victory over the Panthers.

Karissa Hamilton, a University of Kentucky commit, belted three home runs and drove in six runs to lead the offensive onslaught.

Katie Mathies, DePauw commit, and Kylee Edwards each delivered their second home runs of the year and Kiley McIver had a grand slam.

Cheyenne Eads improved to 2-0 with a four-inning shutout performance. Aliyah Lewis pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

The Golden Bears collected 14 hits in the win and Edwards had four stolen bases.

In game two, Hamilton was 4-for-4 at the plate with another home run – her fifth of the season – and she had four more RBIs.

Three Shelbyville pitchers combined to get the Golden Bears off to a 3-0 start this season.

Hailey Pogue got the start and pitched 3 2-3 innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs while striking out five. Brooke Lipperd pitched 2 1-3 innings in relief, allowing one hit and one unearned run.

Eads returned to the pitcher’s circle and tossed another scoreless inning to earn the save.

Edwards and Kaylie Phelps each had two hits in the victory.

The Golden Bears return to action Thursday at potential sectional opponent Columbus North.

The IHSAA Executive Committee today approved retaining the member school enrollment figures from the current classification cycle thus delaying realignment and reclassification for one year.

This year’s enrollment numbers showed significant fluctuation in the case of many schools likely affected by the pandemic and raising questions about their true representation. Following prolonged discussion during today’s monthly meeting of the Executive Committee, members voted 18-1 to extend the classification cycle by a year. However, points earned through the Tournament Success Factor last year (2019-20) and this year (2020-21) will still be applied toward sectional groupings for the 2021-22 school year.

To reiterate, all schools will remain in their respective current classifications in each sport for one more year except for those who meet the Tournament Success Factor criteria.

Next year, the IHSAA will resume reclassification of team sports using certified enrollment figures from the 2021-22 school year for the next two-year cycle (2022-23, 2023-24). Tournament Success Factor points from the 2020-21 and 2021-22 tournament results will be applied toward that next two-year cycle.

Given that last year’s state tournaments in boys basketball, softball and baseball were cancelled, no schools in those sports will move up in 2021-22 since those schools will not be able to achieve the point totals necessary (6 points). Schools already playing up a class in those sports could remain in their same classification (2 points) or revert to their enrollment class once point totals are applied.
