Missed opportunities cost Shelbyville a second-straight regional championship

MOORESVILLE -- In Mooresville’s regular-season win over Shelbyville, Zoey Kugelman pitched a gem to lead the Pioneers over the Golden Bears.

In Tuesday’s Class 4A regional championship game, Kugelman did not get the call to start the game in the circle. So she set forth to do damage at the plate.

The Mooresville junior had three hits, including a solo home run in the  bottom of the first inning, and Kendall Lowry drove in three runs to lead the Pioneers to a 4-1 victory and the program’s first softball regional title.

Class 4A, No. 9 Mooresville (29-3-1) will face 4A No. 12 Pendleton Heights (24-5-1) in the second semifinal game Saturday at the Center Grove Semistate. The first semifinal pits 4A No. 1 Roncalli (29-3-1) against either Evansville North (24-3) or 4A No. 11 Floyd Central (26-7).

Kugelman set the tone early for Mooresville blasting a 2-2 pitch off Shelbyville starting pitcher Cheyenne Eads out of the facility for an early lead.

An Alex Cooper triple and Lowry groundout extended the lead to 2-0 before the inning was over.

Shelbyville, who finished the season 20-9, spent the first half of the game searching for the “big” hit.

Mooresville starting pitcher Reagan Bauer loaded the bases in the first and third innings but escaped unscathed with key strikeouts. The Golden Bears finished the game leaving 10 runners on base.

“We left the bases loaded twice. We were a hit away from cracking that game open,” said Shelbyville head coach Mark Hensley, who informed the team after the game that he will be stepping down as coach. “When you leave 10 on base, especially seven through the first three innings, that could have been a totally different game.”

Two walks and a fielder’s choice in the top of the first inning loaded the bases for Shelbyville but Bauer struck out Riley Maulden to end the threat.

In the third, Pogue had a leadoff double and Bauer walked Stieneker and Abby Brenner to load the bases but struck out Maulden and Destiney Johnson to end the inning.

“It was a tough (loss) because we did so much work to get to this point and I felt like we had everything about where we wanted it and we just could not get over the hump,” said Hensley, who has led Shelbyville to all four of its sectional championships during his tenure.

The fifth inning sealed Shelbyville’s fate. Kugelman reached base on a two-out single and moved to second on a throwing error. With first base open, Shelbyville intentionally walked Cooper – the Indiana University commit, and Lowry made them pay with a two-run double to make it 4-0.

Shelbyville’s lone run came on senior Kylee Edwards’ 16th home run of the season in what fittingly was her final at bat as a Golden Bear.

“Kylee’s last at bat was a home run and Hailey’s last pitch was a strikeout. Even though we didn’t win the game, that was a really nice way to end their careers,” said Hensley.

Pogue, also a senior, pitched the sixth inning and struck out two of the three batters she faced. She will play collegiately at the University of Indianapolis next season.

Shelbyville graduates four – Edwards, Pogue, Brenner and Riley Maulden -- from a squad that added a third straight season with at least 20 wins and back-to-back Hoosier Heritage Conference titles.

Over the last three seasons, the Golden Bears were 68-20 (18-3 in HHC games) and won two sectionals and a regional title and played in the 2022 Class 4A Semistate championship game.

Triton Central earns semistate trip with extra-inning win at Union County

Triton Central’s 20th win of the season netted the softball program’s first regional championship.

On Tuesday in Liberty, Indiana, Brylie Couch stifled Class 2A, No. 10 Union County for eight innings and got enough run support to secure a 4-3 win in eight innings.

Triton Central (20-5) will travel south to the Forest Park Semistate Saturday to face Hauser (24-7) in an 11 a.m. semifinal contest. The second semifinal at Forest Park will feature 2A No. 1 North Posey (26-0) and 2A No. 6 Cascade (24-4).

The semistate championship game is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Triton Central, making just its second regional appearance, scored solo runs off Union County starting pitcher Bailey Mathews in each of the first two innings Tuesday to stake Couch to the lead.

Union County countered with a solo run in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.

Both teams scored again in the sixth inning before the Patriots pushed a run across in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

Jalynn Keith was the only Tiger with two hits in the win. The freshman scored one of TC’s four runs.

Lillie Fillippinie, Hailey Harris and Brooklyn Adkins, who had a solo home run in the win, delivered big hits that produced runs.

Couch struggled to get Auburn-recruit AnnaLea Adams out as most pitchers have this season. Entering the game hitting over .800, the junior had three hits, two doubles and a home run, and scored two runs but Couch limited the rest of the Patriots to just four hits and struck out 16.

Mathews surrendered eight hits and three walks while striking out 10 for Union County.

Triton Central and Hauser did not play each other this season.

Indianapolis 500 purse reaches new peak

The Indianapolis 500 purse record was shattered for the second year in a row after a monumentally successful 107th running of the Indianapolis 500, with race winner Josef Newgarden (photo) of Team Penske earning $3.666 million from the total purse of $17,021,500.

After record-breaking payouts in 2022, this is the largest purse and largest winner’s payout in the century-plus history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” The year’s average payout for NTT Indycar Series drivers was $500,600, which also exceeds last year’s average of $485,000.

In 2022, the Indianapolis 500 purse was $16,000,200 and the year’s winner payout was $3.1 million. Prior to 2022, the largest Indianapolis 500 purse was $14.4 million for the 2008 Indianapolis 500.

Second-place finisher Marcus Ericsson of Chip Ganassi Racing took home $1.043 million, exceeding the take-home prize for last year’s second-place finisher.

“This is the greatest race in the world, and it was an especially monumental month of May featuring packed grandstands and intense on-track action,” Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said. “Now, we have the best end card possible for the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500: a record-breaking purse for the history books.”

The month of May was full of major milestones as Indianapolis Motor Speedway welcomed more than 330,000 fans to the Racing Capital of the World for Sunday’s race, making it the second-largest Indianapolis 500 crowd in more than two decades.

A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ Benjamin Pedersen earned Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year honors for his performance during the month. Pedersen earned a $50,000 bonus for being named Rookie of the Year, adding to a take-home prize of $215,300.

Renew Tickets for 2024

Fans can renew or upgrade their Indy 500 tickets at ims.com/review, by calling 317-492-6700 or by visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Ticket Office. The renewal window will continue through June 20.

Shelbyville softball riding underdog wave of momentum to Mooresville

A Final Four team in 2022 with its pitching staff intact and a Miss Softball candidate in the lineup appears to be labeled an underdog in the 2023 postseason. Shelbyville head coach Mark Hensley is fine with that notion.

“I love it,” said Hensley ahead of Monday’s final practice before tonight’s regional championship game. “I don’t want the target on my back. All the pressure is on everybody else. We are probably one of the lowest seeds in (Class) 4A still alive. If we can somehow find a way to squeeze past Mooresville and get down to where there are only eight teams left, I like our chances.”

Unranked Shelbyville (20-8) travels to 4A No. 9 Mooresville (28-3-1) today for a one-game regional championship game at 7 p.m. The Pioneers defeated Shelbyville, 2-1 on May 6 at Shelbyville.

“I don’t think they played their best game and we definitely didn’t play our best game so I am assuming this game may look a lot different than that first one,” said Hensley. “It still may be kind of low scoring but I felt like our energy level wasn’t great when we played them.

“We came out a little flat and gave up a couple of runs. I don’t think they played their best game either. They didn’t look like they were all that excited to play on a Saturday morning either and they had a little bit more in the tank on that particular Saturday.”

The pitching matchup sets up for a low-scoring game. Shelbyville junior Cheyenne Eads is 13-6 this season with a 2.17 earned run average and 187 strikeouts over 122 innings. After giving up two runs in the first inning against the Pioneers she faced just four batters over the minimum over the final six innings.

On Friday, she limited nationally-ranked Columbus North to five hits and two walks in another complete-game performance.

“Nothing was going to keep me from finishing that game,” said Eads, whose six losses this season have come by a combined nine runs. “I was really dead set on staying in that game and getting it done for my team.”

Mooresville will likely counter with junior Zoey Kugelman, 11-0 with a 1.30 ERA. She limited the Golden Bears to five hits and one run on May 6.

“She is not going to blow it past anybody. She reminds me a little bit of the East Central pitcher in that she won’t blow it past you. We don’t have many strikeouts against that type of pitcher but we also don’t seem to square them up very much either,” said Hensley.

The game also features a battle of two of the top shortstops in the state – both signed to Division I programs.

Shelbyville senior Kylee Edwards, a Mississippi State recruit, is hitting .558 with eight doubles, 15 home runs and a team-high 46 runs scored. In three sectional games, she had six hits and two walks and scored six runs.

Mooresville senior Alex Cooper is committed to Indiana University. She is hitting .576 with 11 doubles, 15 home runs and 69 RBIs. In sectional wins over Center Grove (11-5), Bloomington South (10-0) and Martinsville (6-1), Cooper also had six hits, including four home runs, scored six runs and drove in 10 runs.

“There is a reason she is a Division I shortstop,” said Hensley. “That girl can flat-out hit. We will have to be real careful and pick and choose the pitches we want to throw to her. Hopefully we can find a way to keep the ball in the park when she swings at it.”

Also dangerous for Mooresville are senior Kendall Lowry (.500, 12 doubles, 36 RBIs), junior Madison Poulson (.440, 50 runs scored) – an Indiana State commit, Kugelman (.388, 36 RBIs) and senior Maddie Gainey (.367, 28 RBIs).

Shelbyville has its own wicked trio at the top of the batting order with Edwards, senior Hailey Pogue (.467, 16 doubles, 32 runs scored) – a University of Indianapolis commit, and sophomore Addie Stieneker (.451, 12 doubles, seven home runs, team-leading 40 RBIs). Those three went 7-for-10 in Friday’s 5-2 sectional championship win over 4A No. 2 Columbus North, which was labeled an upset in the minds of the Bull Dogs’ followers.

“(Columbus North) had some pretty high rankings and if you lose one game all year and tie another one you probably deserve to get a lot of press,” said Hensley. “I think they were as high as No. 14 in the country when we beat them. I guess in most people’s eyes it was an upset. We came in to that game fully expecting to win. I don’t think anybody in our dugout thought it was an upset.”

Shelbyville’s Final Four run in 2022 also featured Eads (.337, nine doubles, four home runs, 23 RBIs) and sophomore catcher Kali Laycock (.253, seven doubles, 15 RBIs) but the rest of the 2023 roster has limited postseason experience.

“There are seven or eight that were on that team last year when we made that run all the way to the Final Four,” said Hensley. “Our girls believe, there are 16 teams left in 4A, I think they all believe they are one of the best 16 teams in the state.

“Confidence is a factor with that and obviously some experience. We still have a lot of youth on our team with four sophomores and a handful of freshmen. Even though they are young, they’ve all sort of been there, done that. Even most of our freshmen have played fairly high-level travel seasons and played in big games.”

Mooresville captured its eighth sectional championship but just the program’s first since 2007.

Youthful Tigers set for regional showdown with veteran Patriots

The last words Triton Central head coach Aaron Pyle told his team after its final practice Monday morning before the regional championship was give 100% on the field, make the plays the best you can so you don’t beat yourselves.

For the first time since 2015, and just the second time in program history, Triton Central advanced out of the sectional round of the softball state tournament. The Tigers (19-5) travel to Liberty today to face Class 2A, No. 10 Union County (21-4) at 6 p.m.

The Patriots, winners of four straight sectional tournaments, will have the experience edge on a Triton Central roster that features no seniors and three underclassmen pitchers.

“They do have a little bit more experience at this stage of the game,” said Pyle. “They are solid top to bottom.”

Union County has a devastating one-two punch in junior AnnaLea Adams (.806 batting average, 14 home runs, 55 runs batted in) and senior Shelby Hill (.554, 11 home runs, 55 RBIs). Adams, one of the nation’s leading hitters, is committed to Auburn.

“We will not take them lightly but we’re not going to focus on just those two,” said Pyle.

Union County has four more hitters in the lineup batting at least .360.

Pyle knows he will start a sophomore pitcher tonight, but which one will be a close-to-game-time decision. Sophomores Brylie Couch (7-3, 1.91 earned run average) and Lillie Fillippinie (7-2, 1.53 ERA) have been equally impressive this season.

“I am going to have both warm up and based on which one warms up the best (will be the choice),” said Pyle. “Both will be ready to go.”

Freshman Madi Peterson (5-0, 1.65 ERA) also is part of a pitching staff that has not allowed a run in 25 consecutive innings.

If the pitching staff and defense can do its part, Triton Central just needs to find a way to put runs on the scoreboard.

Union County will counter with junior Bailey Matthews in the pitcher’s circle. She is 18-3 this season with a 2.33 ERA and 174 strikeouts over 114 innings.

“I will be expecting something like the Beech Grove game (2-1 win) or the Southport game (1-0 win) or even the last Heritage Christian game (3-0 win) where it is who gets the bat on the ball first and who gets that first run.”

Fillippinie leads the TC offense, hitting .557 with eight doubles, five home runs and a team-high 31 RBIs. Couch follows at .508 with 12 doubles, six home runs and 26 RBIs.

Madison Collins, another sophomore, is hitting .478 with seven doubles and 26 RBIs.

Triton Central finished the 2015 season at 9-12 but broke through with the program’s first sectional title, just one season after Pyle stepped away from coaching the program. The Tigers lost in the regional semifinal to Monrovia that year, 26-0.

Now with a program-record 19 wins and a roster full of experienced travel ball players, Pyle does not expect his team to be nervous.

“I don’t think the girls will have too much nerves but I know the coaching staff will have some nerves,” said Pyle.

Win or lose, the experience will be invaluable for the Triton Central program in the coming seasons.

“Setting the school record for most wins, having a young crew pitching and catching with them being sophomores and freshmen makes this easy going forward,” said Pyle. “The next 2-3 years we will be solid. And we will know going forward, we can do this.”

Waldron baseball season ends with sectional loss to South Decatur

A defensive error in the fifth inning proved too much to overcome for Waldron.

In the Sectional 60 semifinal round Monday afternoon at Jac-Cen-Del, a costly error allowed South Decatur to score three unearned runs that finished off a 5-1 victory.

Devin Pate pitched into the seventh inning for South Decatur (17-8) and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out 12. Brock Lane needed three pitches to secure the final out and propel the Cougars into the championship game.

Pate and Colby Rathburn each had two hits to lead South Decatur.

Jacob Bennett matched up with Pate on the mound and was equally as impressive. The junior allowed eight hits in six innings and struck out seven. Of the five runs allowed, only two were earned.

Senior Bryce Yarling pitched a scoreless seventh inning to cap off his career. He also had two hits at the plate to raise his batting average to .463 this season. He finished the season with 31 stolen bases for Waldron (7-20).

In the championship game Monday night, North Decatur topped South Decatur, 8-4, to earn a regional championship game berth against Greenwood Christian, winner of the Morristown Sectional.

Shelbyville softball repeats as Sectional 14 champions

COLUMBUS – Kylee Edwards came to pick a fight – and she brought some hungry Golden Bears with her to the Sectional 14 championship game.

The defending sectional champions had not had much success against Columbus North ace Maddi Rutan over the last three seasons. So Edwards did not want to waste time making a statement Friday and whacked the first pitch of the game off the fence for a leadoff double.

Addie Stieneker quickly delivered the senior home, one of three RBIs the sophomore would collect in the game. Hailey Pogue attacked a fifth-inning pitch from Rutan and sent it to the wall that scored two more and Shelbyville captured the program’s fourth sectional championship, 5-2 over the No. 2-ranked Bull Dogs.

The Golden Bears (20-8) will travel to Class 4A, No. 9 Mooresville (28-3-1) Tuesday for the regional championship. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Edwards played with a heavy heart all week. Her grandfather passed away Sunday. Two days later she belted her 15th home run to help Shelbyville to a 2-0 win over East Central in the sectional opener. On Thursday, she had two hits and a walk, scored two runs and drove in two in an 8-3 win over Franklin.

She wasted little time getting to work Friday.

“As the leadoff batter I was attacking,” explained Edwards. “Starting the game, I knew she was going to throw me a strike first pitch to start off in a good way so I knew I was going to attack it. In my other at bats I had that same mindset. I was going to get to her before she got to me.”

Edwards tripled in the third inning on the first pitch from Rutan and after getting up in the count 3-0 in the fifth was intentionally walked. She added a double in the seventh inning and was part of a devastating trio of hitters at the top of Shelbyville’s lineup that went 7-for-10 with four extra-base hits, four runs scored and all five RBIs.

“Those first three hitters we have in the lineup, when they go we are hard to beat,” said Shelbyville head coach Mark Hensley. “Those are three of the best hitters in the state that we go back-to-back-to back with. They make a lot of chaos and make a lot of issues for people.”

While the top three did the discernible damage, the entire lineup put pressure on Rutan. The leadoff hitter reached in all seven innings.

“To do it against a pitcher like that … as far as I’m concerned she is a top-10 in the country type of player,” said Hensley of the Eastern Kentucky commit. “When you are a pitcher like that you can win every single day. You have a shot.”

The same can be said of Shelbyville pitcher Cheyenne Eads. The junior limited Columbus North (25-2-1) to just five hits, two walks and notched 10 strikeouts.

“That’s the difference, too,” said Hensley. “When ‘Chey’ is on and she is working her pitches, she is as good as anybody in the state. I think some people have kind of missed the boat on that but if you look out there and she is five-foot-four and about 130 pounds, some people don’t realize just how good she is. I’ve been screaming it from the rooftops for three years now to realize how good she is. Some of these colleges have been slow to the party with her but whoever pulls the trigger on that one is going to get a good one.”

The Bull Dogs quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first inning when Rutan doubled to score Kelsey Lovelace.

Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth.

Kali Laycock led off the inning with her second hit of the game. Edwards drew a one-out walk and Pogue laced the first pitch she saw past Columbus North second baseman Josephine Lemmons into the gap. Both runners scored to give Shelbyville a 3-1 advantage.

Stieneker brought Pogue home for her second RBI of the game.

Kaylee Cowan blasted a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 4-2.

Edwards doubled to start the seventh and scored on another Stieneker single to get Shelbyville within three outs of the title.

Miley McClellan started the final half inning with a single and Cowan ripped an Eads pitch into left field but Riley Maulden got a quick jump and made a diving catch to quell any momentum for Columbus North.

“I think that’s the best high school outfield catch I’ve ever seen,” said Hensley.

Eads struck out pinch hitter Bailee Scruggs and, fittingly, got Lemmons to roll a grounder at Edwards. The shortstop gobbled it up and fired it across the diamond to set off the celebration.

The sectional champions show appreciation to the large crowd in attendance Friday in Columbus.

“We all worked together really well. We all wanted this game so bad,” said Edwards. “You could tell on the field because our energy was up. Everybody was communicating. We were talking strategy the whole time. Our energy was way higher than theirs and I think that got us the win this game.”

Edwards and her family laid Pat Settles to rest today after she went 6-for-9 in the sectional with five extra-base hits, six runs scored and three RBIs.

“We have a lot going on with my grandpa,” admitted Edwards. “I wanted to go out and do this for my parents and my family. I wouldn’t want this any other way. I think this is a great opportunity and I was playing for him.”

Notes: Columbus North entered the game ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 14 nationally by MaxPreps. The Bull Dogs tied the program record for wins in a season. … Columbus North head coach Ron McDonald is retiring after building the program up since 2017. … Prior to the game, each Shelbyville player presented a rose to Mindy Edwards, daughter of Pat Settles. … With the win over Columbus North, Shelbyville is set up for a “revenge tour.” After losing 1-0 to Columbus North early in the season, the Golden Bears avenged that loss and now face Mooresville, who defeated Shelbyville 2-1 on May 6. The semistate bracket pairs the Shelbyville-Mooresville winner with the winner of the Lawrence North (22-7)-Pendleton Heights (23-5-1). HHC-member Pendleton Heights defeated the Golden Bears 4-3 on May 13. And the semistate championship game could yield a rematch with top-ranked and two-time defending state champion Roncalli, who topped Shelbyville 2-0 on May 9.

Saints capitalize at opportune moment to bring end to Morristown's baseball season

MORRISTOWN -- When Morristown missed its chance to take the lead, Indianapolis Lutheran capitalized.

Ryan Redding ripped a full-count offering into the gap to score Nate Hughes in the bottom of the fifth inning for what turned out to be the sectional semifinal game’s only run.

Lutheran eliminated Morristown from Sectional 59 Saturday, 1-0. The Saints (16-11) will face either Greenwood Christian or Indianapolis Metropolitan, making its first sectional appearance, Monday in the championship game.

Hughes needed help to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top half of the fifth inning and Hudson Mills threw just one pitch to get the third out of the inning. The lefty then struck out five of the seven batters he faced in the final two innings to secure the win.

Grant Kessler took the hard-luck loss for Morristown (12-12). The lefty surrendered seven hits but struck out 10 Saints and saw his defense make several outstanding plays.

“I challenged them to play clean baseball and they did just that for me,” said Morristown head coach Brandon Kessler. “I couldn’t ask for more.”

Hughes only allowed two Yellow Jackets to reach second base in the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth when he hit Owen Rinzel, allowed a Dyllan Rutledge single and hit Kessler to load the bases and bring Bryce Bryant to the plate.

Bryant was aggressive on the first pitch he saw from Mills but grounded out to end the inning.

“We couldn’t piece a couple of hits together,” said Kessler. “It was a little frustrating. I couldn’t say enough about our hitting, it just wasn’t timely hitting. We’ve been struggling with the sticks the last couple games and that part I was pleased with (today). We just couldn’t put a couple together.”

Bryant, a junior, came into the sectional semifinal hitting a team-leading .594.

“There is nobody more frustrated than that young man right there,” said Kessler of Bryant. “He is leading the conference in hitting and ranked pretty high in the state. He has a solid stick and always has.”

Kessler worked out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning and kept the Saints in check the entire game.

Hughes produced a one-out single in the fifth inning and leadoff hitter Jackson Brandenburg sacrifice bunted him to second. Hughes stole third base and scored when Redding doubled into the left-centerfield gap.

Morristown matched its 2022 season record and finished third in the Mid-Hoosier Conference standings. Graduation will take Rutledge (.391 batting average), Zachary Noel (.368), Tyler Schonfeld (.295), Kamdyn Gaines (Morristown’s starting centerfield Saturday) and Kessler, a Mount St. Joseph commit, who finished with more than 140 strikeouts this season.

“I’m pretty dang excited,” said Kessler with regard to the state of the baseball program. “With our junior high program, we are almost evenly balanced across the team with 5-6 guys in each class. We’ve got guys coming in from the eighth grade and we will expect a lot more out of our freshmen next year, and sophomores as well.”

Shelbyville softball moves into Sectional 14 championship game with win over Franklin

COLUMBUS -- Franklin got the spark it needed then Shelbyville stomped it out.

Following a two-run home run by Aubrey Leugers in the top of the fifth inning that tied the Sectional 14 semifinal game, the Golden Bears responded with back-to-back three-run innings to salt away an 8-3 victory and a berth in the sectional championship game.

Shelbyville (19-8) will face Class 4A, No. Columbus North (25-1-1) at 7 p.m. tonight for the right to take on No. 9 Mooresville (28-3-1) in a one-game regional Tuesday in Mooresville. Columbus North defeated Shelbyville, 1-0, on April 6.

On Thursday, Shelbyville staked starting pitcher Cheyenne Eads to a quick 2-0 lead after one inning. Kylee Edwards and Hailey Pogue worked walks from Franklin pitcher Bryleigh Carlisle-Haltom and scored on an Addie Stieneker double and Eads sacrifice fly.

The Golden Bears failed to extend the lead over the next three innings which kept the Grizzly Cubs (15-14-1) in contention.

In the top of the fifth, Madison Stearns battled Eads for a walk and Leugers belted her fifth home run of the season over the centerfield wall.

A team Shelbyville defeated 13-5 earlier in the season was now tied with it in an elimination game. The Golden Bears were not bothered by the mounting pressure, though.

Hailey Maulden drew a leadoff walk. Pinch-runner Makinah Noel scored on a Kylee Edwards double. The senior went to third on the throw home and then scored on a Pogue single up the middle to make it 4-2. An Abby Brenner groundout plated Pogue for a 5-2 lead.

Pogue took over for Eads in the pitcher’s circle in the sixth and delivered a quick inning, bringing the Golden Bears back to the plate.

A Riley Maulden walk and back-to-back pinch-hit singles by Sydney Brown and Noel loaded the bases for Edwards, who collected her second hit and run batted in for a 6-2 lead.

Laycock, returning to the bases to run for Brown, stole home as Edwards distracted the Franklin catcher on the base paths.

Pogue followed with a sacrifice fly for her second RBI.

Franklin plated a run in the top half of the seventh ahead of the final out.

Sectional Championship Preview

The pitching duel is set. Shelbyville junior Cheyenne Eads against Columbus North senior Maddi Rutan.

Columbus North is 4-1 against Shelbyville over the last three seasons with the Golden Bears’ lone win coming in the 2022 sectional, 2-1.

Rutan, an Eastern Kentucky commit, can be overpowering – both in the circle and the batter’s box. She had three hits and three RBIs as a sophomore in the Bull Dogs’ 9-5 win at Shelbyville. At the sectional that year, she had two more hits and struck out nine Golden Bears in a 4-2 victory.

Rutan racked up 13 strikeouts in the 2022 regular-season meeting – a 2-0 victory. And she threw two scoreless innings of relief in early April in her team’s 1-0 win at Shelbyville.

Eads, the losing pitcher in each of Shelbyville’s four losses to the Bull Dogs, has grown in confidence and effectiveness since her freshman debut in 2021.

With two dynamic pitchers starting – and both teams having strong No. 2 pitchers – runs should be hard to come by. Defensive mistakes could prove devastating.

Rutan is hitting .545 this season with 12 doubles and eight home runs. Kelsey Lovelace follows at .433 with nine doubles and 29 RBIs. Kirsten Danford, who had a home run in Thursday’s 8-2 semifinal win over Whiteland, is hitting .416 with 38 RBIs.

Mississippi State commit Kylee Edwards is hitting .542 from the leadoff spot for Shelbyville with a team-high 15 home runs.

Hailey Pogue has been hot down the stretch, raising her batting average to .471.

Addie Stieneker is hitting .437 with 13 doubles, seven home runs and a team-leading 37 RBIs.

Collegiate Update: Taylor helps Eastern Michigan to first winning record since 2011

Eastern Michigan baseball swept a three-game series against Northern Illinois to secure its first winning season since 2011.

The Eagles closed out the series Saturday with a 7-1 victory that improved them to 27-26 (12-18 Mid-American Conference).

Cory Taylor, a Shelbyville graduate, belted his seventh home run of the season in the win. The junior went 1-for-3 in the game with a walk and his 32nd run batted in for the Eagles.

In Thursday’s series-opening 11-2 win, Taylor had his 12th double of the season and drove in two.

He had two walks and a stolen base Friday in a 10-9 victory.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Jill Anspaugh

The Shelbyville graduate was one of 39 Franklin College student-athletes to be named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tom Bohlsen Academic All-Conference list. Athletes must have at least a cumulative 3.5 GPA, be a varsity athlete, and have completed the equivalent of a full academic year to be considered.

Anspaugh is a senior Exercise Science major.

Elizabeth Kemper

The Triton Central graduate finished 121st overall Wednesday for Taylor University in the NAIA National Championships at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

Kemper shot rounds of 85 and 87 for Taylor, who missed the top-17 cut by three shots and finished 20th in the tournament.

Charlie Rife

The Shelbyville graduate had a double Friday in his final at bat of his freshman year at Bellarmine University.

Bellarmine lost to Liberty, 12-2, Friday and closed out its season with a 13-42 record (8-22 Atlantic Sun).

Damon Lux

The Shelbyville graduate had a hit and was hit by a pitch Tuesday in Duke’s 8-7 loss in 11 innings to North Carolina State in Pool D play of the ACC Tournament.

The loss dropped Duke to 35-20 this season.

The Blue Devils continue Pool D play Friday at 3 p.m. against Miami, who won two games in the three-game series with Duke that ended Saturday.

Hannah File

The Shelbyville graduate smashed her 12th home run of the season Saturday in Louisville’s 9-1 win over Northern Kentucky in the NCAA Regional in Knoxville, Tennessee.

File’s home run set the Louisville team record for home runs in a season (64).

The Cardinals opened the regional Friday with a 4-3 loss to Indiana and closed out their season Sunday with a 4-2 loss to the Hoosiers.

Whiteland pitcher shuts down Shelbyville in baseball sectional debut

ST. LEON – Shelbyville had no answer for Drew Helton.

The Whiteland junior twirled a no-hitter Wednesday to lead Whiteland to a 6-0 win over Shelbyville in game two of the Class 4A, Sectional 14 baseball tournament at East Central High School.

Helton allowed two walks and struck out 11 in completely shutting down Shelbyville (14-14).

“Kudos to Drew Helton,” said Shelbyville head coach Royce Carlton. “He threw the game of his life tonight.

“It was one of those you can’t ever anticipate. Our guys were swinging at it. It wasn’t like we were watching a whole lot of stuff. He had some good movement. He was bringing it and spotting it up. It is hard to do much when a guy pitches that well.”

Aiden Smith took the loss for Shelbyville in his postseason debut. The freshman struggled to command his pitches but kept working out of trouble to keep the Golden Bears in the game.

Maalik Perkins led off the game with an infield single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Blake Riddle’s fly out to centerfielder Donovon Martin.

Helton followed with a sacrifice fly to left field and it was all the run support he needed.

Logan Prickett earned a two-out walk in the bottom of the third inning but a Luke Brinkman infield grounder ended the inning.

Dalton Jones worked a two-out walk in the seventh inning but Helton struck out Eli Sheppard to end the game.

The Golden Bears entered the sectional with great expectations but the execution was non-existent – no hits, 11 strikeouts, five walks and two hit batters, and four defensive errors.

“This was a series of the most unfortunate events all compiled into one,” said Carlton. “I would say this is probably my most disappointing loss in my career. Nothing got started. Nothing went right. It was one of those where you hope something happens to get a little momentum and we couldn’t even get a little bit.”

Peyton Emberton delivered a two-out single in the fourth that scored Brayden Roy with the game’s second run.

In the fifth, Perkins scored on a Helton double to make it 3-0. Riddle scored on a Donavin Woodall sacrifice fly and a fielding error allowed Helton to score for a 5-0 lead.

In game one of the sectional Wednesday, East Central defeated Columbus East, 8-0. The Trojans (18-7) will host Whiteland (12-13) Friday at 6 p.m. in the first sectional semifinal game at Benner Field.

In game two, Columbus North (15-10) will take the field against Franklin (14-13-1).

Shelbyville started just one senior Wednesday and its top three pitchers will return next season.

“We have a lot of talent and we have talent coming up from the eighth-grade level,” said Carlton. “We have a very bright future.”

Triton Central shuts down Heritage Christian to secure sectional championship

A pitcher’s duel was expected. Triton Central’s pitcher just happened to be a little bit better.

Brylie Couch did not allow a hit and struck out 15 Wednesday to lead Triton Central to a 3-0 victory over Heritage Christian in the Class 2A, Sectional 42 championship game in Fairland.

The sectional title is the first for the Tigers since 2015 and just the second in program history.

Lillie Fillippinie provided the offensive spark, collecting a double and a home run, scoring two runs and driving in two of TC’s three runs. Madison Collin drove in the other TC run.

Heritage Christian pitcher Alayna Tesnar went the distance, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out nine.

The Eagles finished the season 19-9.

Triton Central (19-5) will travel to 2A No. 10 Union County Tuesday for a one-game regional. The Patriots (21-4) defeated 2A No. 9 Eastern Hancock Wednesday, 6-5, to get the program a third-straight sectional championship.

Prep Report: Eads dominant in Shelbyville's sectional win over East Central

Most nights Cheyenne Eads does not need much run support when she is pitching. Tuesday’s sectional opener for Shelbyville was a perfect example.

Eads allowed one hit and two walks while striking out 13 to lead the Golden Bears to a 2-0 victory over East Central (11-18).

Shelbyville (18-8) got a quick run in the first inning when Hailey Pogue singled off East Central starting pitcher Montana Plymale and Addie Stieneker doubled into the right-centerfield gap.

Kylee Edwards added a solo home run – her 15th of the season – in the third inning and Eads delivered a complete-game shutout.

The Trojans only got one runner to second base in their only real threat against the Golden Bears. Lexi Hatmaker had a one-out single and Makenna Mason drew a two-out walk but Eads struck out Karlie Davis to end the inning.

Eads had at least two strikeouts in four of the seven innings.

In the other quarterfinal game Tuesday, Class 4A, No. 2 Columbus North eliminated Columbus East, 14-4.

Thursday’s semifinal games are now set.

At 6 p.m., Shelbyville will face Franklin (15-13-1). The Golden Bears defeated Franklin, 13-5, on April 20.

Columbus North (24-1-1) will follow in the second semifinal against Whiteland (13-11). The Bull Dogs defeated Whiteland, 9-1, on April 10.

Triton Central hires Hall of Fame coach to lead boys basketball program

Once again Bryan Graham turned to Franklin Central to find a new boys basketball coach. This one turns out to be a little more experienced than the last one.

In 2020, Graham, Triton Central’s athletic director and girls basketball coach, turned to Mark James, his former coach at Franklin Central who was now coaching at Perry Meridian, to ask if he could recommend anyone for the TC job. Kyle Ballard’s name came up.

Triton Central hired Ballard who went on to win 48 games and two sectional titles in four seasons in Fairland. Ballard recently announced his resignation to become the new boys basketball coach at Franklin Central.

So Graham called James, who resigned at Perry Meridian after five seasons, to gauge his interest in coming to Triton Central. James never hesitated, citing Triton Central as just the environment he was looking for after 41 years of coaching.

“It used to be the county schools were small enough where everything revolved around the school,” said James Monday after being introduced as Triton Central’s head coach. “Now everything is so diverse and big, it’s not quite the same.

“Whereas when you come to Waldron and Triton Central games, there are still a lot of people in the gym. Everything still revolves around that. I missed that so I am excited to be here.”

James arrives with Hall of Fame credentials – literally. He has 599 career wins, two Marion County championships, 12 sectional and two regional titles and he led Ben Davis to the 2017 state championship. Over his career, he has coached two NBA players, seven Indiana All-Stars and 20 Division I players.

James was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

The 1973 Martinsville graduate began his coaching career at Covington. After stops as an assistant coach at Carmel and head coaching gigs at Franklin Central, Ben Davis and Perry Meridian, James was ready to return to a smaller school environment similar to where he started.

“I am excited about this opportunity,” said James. “The people are excited but they are not nearly as excited as I am.”

Triton Central finished 17-7 last season and lost to Scecina in the championship game of the Eastern Hancock Sectional, which denied the Tigers a third-straight sectional title.

The program graduated its two leading scorers in Isaac Morgan (15.6 ppg) and Luke Faust (13.3 ppg) but saw freshmen Eli Sego (12.2 ppg) and Max Crouse (6 ppg) see significant playing time with the seniors and sophomore Silas Blair (9.9 ppg).

Ballard takes over a Franklin Central program that has not won 10 games in a season since 2020.

“Thank you to Triton Central for an incredible four years,” wrote Ballard on his Twitter account. “The players, families, staff, and administration made it a truly special time for us and we are forever grateful. I am so glad the program is in great hands moving forward. We will be your biggest fans.”

Baseball Sectional Preview: Shelbyville goal to ride young starting pitchers through the postseason

Shelbyville scored eight runs in the first inning on the way to a 15-5 win over Whiteland on May 12. Another strong start against the Warriors would put the Golden Bears into the East Central Sectional semifinal round on Friday.

Shelbyville (14-13) opens the postseason Wednesday at East Central against Whiteland (11-13) in the second quarterfinal game. Head coach Royce Carlton would take another big inning early but will not count on it a second time around.

“You always hear the old adage it’s tough to beat a good team twice,” said Carlton. “It was nice to see what Whiteland had and know we can handle a lot of their hitters.”

Shelbyville did not throw its No. 1 pitcher in that regular-season game, but neither did Whiteland. Carlton expects junior Drew Helton (4-3, 2.06 earned run average) will get the start for the Warriors.

“We know we are going to get the Helton kid,” he said. “He is pretty good. He throws a lot of strikes. We are definitely going to have to put the ball in play and hit it hard.”

Shelbyville will send freshman Aiden Smith (photo) to the mound. He is 5-2 this season with a 2.17 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 42 innings.

“It is nice going in knowing we have our No. 1 on the mound,” said Carlton. “He has been good all year for us. He is a gamer and he wants that big moment.”

In the sectional opener Wednesday, Columbus East (4-21) takes on East Central (17-7). The winner faces the winner of game two Wednesday in the semifinal round Friday at 6 p.m.

The second semifinal Friday pits Columbus North (15-10) against Franklin (13-13-1).

The sectional championship game is set for Monday at noon.

Shelbyville has had success behind the formidable pitching punch of Smith and sophomore Gavyn Fisher, who would get the semifinal start.

“Gavyn is kind of the unsung, underrated hero of our pitching staff,” said Carlton. “He has not had the run support and had some defensive errors behind him at times, but if you look at his ERA against the conference teams, that kid is really good as a sophomore.”

Fisher is 2-3 with a 2.40 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 35 innings.

If either Smith or Fisher get in trouble, senior McKayne Wickham (2-2, 3.43 ERA) and junior Luke Brinkman are capable of getting outs.

While Smith is a heralded pitcher, he leads the team in hitting at .446 and has 10 doubles and two home runs.

“In year one since I first got here, he was the first kid I ever met and the first kid I worked with,” said Carlton. “He was a fifth grader. Seeing his progress through and through, the kid is special. He is different. I haven’t personally coached a kid with that mentality and skill set. The sky is the limit for him.”

Fisher has been strong at the plate as well, hitting .311 with 20 RBIs.

The East Central Sectional champion will face the Mooresville Sectional champion in a one-game regional on June 3. The Mooresville Sectional includes top-ranked Center Grove, No. 6 Mooresville and No. 8 Bloomington North.

TRITON CENTRAL

Triton Central (14-12) opens Class 2A, Sectional 42 Wednesday against the host school, 2A No. 5 Park Tudor (20-7).

The two teams met just recently on May 18 in Fairland. The Panthers prevailed 7-5.

Sophomore Bryce Haney (4-3, 2.51 ERA) has been Triton Central’s top pitcher this season. No other pitcher has more than two wins for the Tigers, who started the season 0-5 and won just two of their first 10 games.

Mathew Shircliff finished his junior season strong, now leading Triton Central in batting average (.392), hits (29), home runs (3) and RBIs (26).

Freshman Eli Sego is hitting .354 and matched Shircliff with a team-high 29 hits. Sophomore Nick Riggins (.306, 19 RBIs) and Avynn Whitaker (.301, 23 RBIs) also have been productive.

The winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal contest advances to face Indianapolis Scecina (10-16) in Monday’s second semifinal game.

The first semifinal has Irvington Prep (14-6) taking on Heritage Christian (14-15) at 10 a.m.

The sectional championship game follows at 7 p.m. Monday.

The Park Tudor Sectional champion moves on to face the Northeastern Sectional champion on June 3. Both No. 3 Shenandoah and No. 8 Hagerstown are in the Northeastern Sectional.

MORRISTOWN

Morristown is again a sectional host but will not have county rivals Waldron and Southwestern in the field.

The first quarterfinal contest is Wednesday with Edinburgh (3-21) taking on the host Yellow Jackets (11-11) at 5 p.m. Indianapolis Lutheran (14-11) follows against Eminence (7-11).

Wednesday’s winners return Saturday at 10 a.m. for a semifinal game. The second semifinal will follow pitting Greenwood Christian (12-12-1) against Indianapolis Metropolitan (0-6).

The sectional championship game is set for 10 a.m. Monday.

The draw sets up Morristown to utilize its more dominant pitcher, senior Grant Kessler (Mount St. Joseph commit), in the semifinal round. The Yellow Jackets swept Edinburgh by scores of 17-0 and 18-0 in late April.

With a win over the Lancers, Morristown would likely get a rematch with Lutheran, who defeated the Yellow Jackets 14-3 on April 15.

Kessler has 130 strikeouts through 55 innings pitched, which puts him amongst the state leaders.

Morristown also has had success working behind Dyllan Rutledge, Kade Rogers and Bryce Bryant.

Bryant leads the Yellow Jackets with a .569 batting average and 20 RBIs.

Snyder (.431, 12 RBIs) and Rutledge (.404, 12 RBIs) also are dangerous in the lineup.

The Morristown Sectional winner will face the Jac-Cen-Del Sectional champion in a one-game regional, hosted by Morristown.

SOUTHWESTERN

The Spartans (8-11) have been streaky. They have lost four games in a row twice this season but won their final three to maintain an opportunity to get back to .500 this season.

Southwestern opens the Jac-Cen-Del Sectional Wednesday in the second semifinal game against the host Eagles (8-13). The Spartans defeated Jac-Cen-Del, 16-13, on April 4.

In the first quarterfinal game Wednesday, North Decatur (6-15) takes on Oldenburg Academy (8-11).

Wednesday’s winners meet Monday at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal game.

The sectional championship is set for 7 p.m. Monday.

WALDRON

The Mohawks (7-18) received a bye into Monday’s semifinals. To stay busy, Waldron added games against Rushville and Indianapolis Scecina this week to prepare for the postseason.

In the second semifinal Saturday, Waldron takes on South Decatur (16-7), the co-Mid-Hoosier Conference champions this season. The Mohawks and Cougars split their two-game MHC series this season.

Waldron has relied on senior Bryce Yarling (2-3, 4.59 ERA) and junior Jacob Bennett (2-1, 2.73 ERA) on the mound this season.

Yarling is the offensive sparkplug, hitting .459 with 10 doubles, three triples and 29 stolen bases.

Jared Brooks leads the team with 20 RBIs. The junior is hitting .352.

Bennett is hitting .355 with six doubles and 17 RBIs.

Senior Donovan Russell is hitting .347 with five doubles.

The winner of the Jac-Cen-Del Sectional advances to face the Morristown Sectional champion.

Softball Sectional Preview: Golden Bears chasing another deep postseason run

With the final day of the school year near, teachers are already making vacation plans. Mark Hensley does not have that luxury because of his double duty as educator and head softball coach at Shelbyville.

“We’re not making any plans,” laughed Hensley as he recalled his wife asking him about the upcoming schedule. “We may be off Memorial Day weekend or we play be playing for two more weeks.”

To be clear, Hensley will take the extended postseason softball schedule before enjoying his summer break.

Shelbyville has followed up its first Final Four appearance in 2022 with a 17-8 season that includes six losses against state-ranked opponents by a combined eight runs, including a 2-0 loss to Class 4A, No. 1 Roncalli and 1-0 loss to 4A No. 2 Columbus North.

The Golden Bears, co-champions of the Hoosier Heritage Conference for the second consecutive season, open the Columbus North Sectional tonight at 6 p.m. against East Central (11-17). Shelbyville secured a 1-0 victory over the Trojans on April 7.

“All I remember about that game is I don’t think I’ve ever been that cold in my life,” said Hensley. “It was about 40 degrees out. It was spitting that sleety rain stuff and it was dark. I remember it was not a real good game.”

East Central pitcher Montana Plymale limited Shelbyville to seven hits in what was a scoreless game until the bottom of the seventh when Hailey Pogue drove in Addysyn Wettrick with the game’s only run.

“This time around, it will be around 80 degrees when we play,” said Hensley. “Hopefully, it is a little bit better for us.”

The second sectional quarterfinal game tonight pits Columbus East (16-11) against Columbus North (23-1-1).

The winner of the Shelbyville-East Central game returns Thursday for a 6 p.m. semifinal contest against Franklin (15-13-1). The winner of the game between the Columbus schools gets Whiteland (13-11) in the second game Thursday.
The sectional championship game is slated for 7 p.m. Friday.

The Golden Bears are led offensively by Mississippi State commit Kylee Edwards, who is hitting .542 during her senior season with 39 hits, 14 home runs and 24 runs batted in.

Pogue (photo), who will play collegiately at the University of Indianapolis, is hitting .449 with 15 doubles and 20 RBIs.

Shelbyville also will count on production from junior Cheyenne Eads (.351 average, nine doubles, three home runs, 18 RBIs) and sophomore Addie Stieneker (.442, 10 doubles, seven home runs, team-leading 35 RBIs).

Eads (9-6, 2.17 earned run average, 150 strikeouts in 96 innings) and Pogue (6-1, 1.57 ERA) are a strong 1-2 pitching punch and regularly overpower opponents.

The winner of the Columbus North Sectional advances to play at the winner of Sectional 13, which includes 4A No. 9 Mooresville (26-3-1), who defeated Shelbyville, 2-1, on May 6.

TRITON CENTRAL

Class 2A, Sectional 42, hosted by Triton Central, got underway Monday with a pair of quarterfinal contests that did not feature the top two teams in the field.

Indianapolis Scecina defeated Christel House, 13-0, and Park Tudor knocked off Irvington Prep, 11-8.

The semifinals are tonight with Heritage Christian (18-8) facing Scecina (5-14) at 5 p.m. with Triton Central (17-5) following against Park Tudor (11-8).

Triton Central has put together a 17-win season without a senior on the roster and more talent in the pipeline, according to head coach Aaron Pyle.

“For the next few years, we will be tough,” said Pyle following a loss to Indiana Crossroads Conference champion Cascade on April 25.

The Tigers finished third in the ICC standings behind 2A No. 6 Cascade (21-4, 7-0 ICC) and Class A, No. 7 Indianapolis Lutheran (16-7, 6-1 ICC).

Pyle used three pitchers this season to amass a program-record 17 wins. Sophomores Brylie Couch and Lillie Fillippinie and freshman Madi Peterson all have earned run averages below 2.50 and have nearly twice as many strikeouts as innings pitched.

Fillippinie and Couch also help themselves at the plate, leading the team with .519 and .500 batting averages, respectively.

“Overall, we have a lot more utility players that can play multiple positions and not tied to one position,” said Pyle of his roster. “From the top down, everybody does what we ask and goes with it.”

Three of TC’s five losses this season are to state-ranked opponents. The two biggest wins came at Beech Grove (19-6), 2-1 on April 19, and against Heritage Christian, 10-0 on April 13.

Fillippinie twirled a five-inning no-hitter against Heritage Christian which sets up the Tigers as the favorite to capture the program’s first sectional championship since 2015.

In the win, though, Triton Central did not face Heritage Christian junior pitcher Alayna Tesnar, who has an ERA under 2.00 and a more than 2-to-1 strikeout-to-innings-pitched ratio.

The Triton Central Sectional champion will face the Union County Sectional champion in a one-game regional on May 30. The Union County Sectional includes 2A No. 9 Eastern Hancock (20-6) and Union County (19-4).

MORRISTOWN

The Yellow Jackets won four of their final six games to get above .500 going into the postseason.

Morristown will be the last team to debut at the Edinburgh Sectional that started Monday with Class A, No. 7 Indianapolis Lutheran defeating a 17-win Eminence squad, 11-0.

The host Lancers (12-12) take on Greenwood Christian (3-10) today in another quarterfinal contest.

On Wednesday, Lutheran (16-7) returns to face Providence Cristo Rey (1-12) in the first semifinal game.

Morristown (11-9) finally arrives on Thursday to face the winner of the Edinburgh-Greenwood Christian game.

The sectional championship game is set for Friday.

The Yellow Jackets do not have an overpowering pitching staff so they will need a strong offensive punch just to get to the championship game.

Nevaeh Cox leads Morristown with a .562 batting average. Brandi Enterkin (.489) and Alexia Rogers (.404) also are above .400 entering the postseason.

Cox leads the team with 10 doubles, three triples and seven home runs. She also has a team-high 34 RBIs.

The Edinburgh Sectional champion will host the winner of the North Decatur Sectional champion in a one-game regional.

WALDRON

The Mohawks (3-13-1) received a bye into the North Decatur Sectional semifinal round and will face the host Chargers (13-15) today at 6 p.m.

On Monday, North Decatur advanced with a 13-1 victory over Oldenburg Academy (2-17). Jac-Cen-Del (8-16) earned a spot in the sectional championship game with a 16-0 win over South Decatur (7-17).

Waldron lost a pair of conference games to North Decatur during the regular season and was outscored 32-3.

The pitching staff will be hard pressed to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard. That means the offense needs to be productive to reach the sectional championship game.

Audrey Hogg, Alyssa Benson, Brooklyn Hudnall and Bre Barton are all hitting over .300 this season.

The North Decatur Sectional champion will travel to the Edinburgh Sectional champion for a one-game regional.

State track and field meet within reach for Goedde, Wilkins and Lambert

To reach the IHSAA State Track and Field Meet, Morristown’s Oakleigh Goedde will have to surpass the height that won her the Warren Central Sectional high jump title.

The Morristown senior (photo) was the only participant to clear five feet one week ago in winning a sectional title. She enters today’s Franklin Regional as the fourth overall seed – the top three automatically advance to the state championship meet.

Franklin seniors Brooke Coffman and Morgan Sandrock each cleared 5-3 at the sectional as did Center Grove sophomore Emerson Vlcan.

Goedde and Greensburg sophomore Leah West are next in the seeding list at 5-0.

The girls state track and field meet is June 3 on the campus of Indiana University.

Much like Goedde, Triton Central junior Brayden Wilkins and Shelbyville junior Ethan Lambert will likely need a career-best performance to advance out of the Greenfield-Central Regional Thursday.

Wilkins is the fifth overall seed in the 100 meters and the sixth seed in the 200. He finished third in both events in the sectional.

Warren Central’s Jaelyn Reeves-Lile is the top seed in the 100 at 10.77 seconds. Greenwood’s William Riley (10.92), Warren Central’s David Taylor (10.99), Center Grove’s Micah Coyle (11.03) also are seeded ahead of Wilkins (11.06).

Whiteland’s Matthew Wray (21.82) is the top seed in the 200 ahead of Reeves-Lile (21.88), Coyle (21.92), Riley (22.29), Greenfield-Central’s Ian Jack (22.33) and Wilkins (22.37).

Wilkins also qualified for the long jump at the regional but opted not to compete to focus on the sprint events.

Lambert is the fifth seed in the discus event.

Center Grove’s Garrett Messer is the top seed with a best sectional throw of 185-9.5. The next three seeds are all over 160 feet – Warren Central’s Damien Shanklin (169-8), Roncalli’s Seth Brosseau (164-4) and Whiteland’s Tayton Schakel (164-1).

Lambert is the only other competitor in the field that cleared 150 feet at the sectional. His best throw was 151.

Also competing Thursday at the Greenfield-Central Regional are:

  • Shelbyville sophomore Blake Hughes in the 400 (seeded 10th at 51.81)
  • Morristown junior Cade Mahin in the 400 (seeded 14th at 52.49)
  • Shelbyville senior Beau Kenkel in the 800 (seeded 9th at 2:02.41)
  • Triton Central junior Ethan Cales in the 110 hurdles (seeded 13th at 15.97)
  • Shelbyville’s 3,200 relay team of seniors Elijah Von Werder and Kenkel, junior Ben Price and sophomore Teagan Ervine are seeded 16th at 8:40.95.

The boys state track and field meet is June 2 at Indiana University.

Seniors lead Shelbyville to extra-inning win over Cathedral

All four seniors contributed to an extra-inning win Thursday in Shelbyville’s final game of the regular season against Cathedral.

On Senior Night, Kylee Edwards tripled with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and Hailey Pogue hit the first pitch she saw to bring an end to a back-and-forth affair against the Irish, 9-8.

Cathedral dropped to 17-9 and saw its 9-game win streak snapped. Shelbyville improved to 17-8.

Fellow seniors Abby Brenner (single, two walks) and Riley Maulden (single, run scored) helped rally the Golden Bears, who immediately fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning.

Angela Valentine belted a 2-run home run off Shelbyville starting pitcher Cheyenne Eads to stake Cathedral to a 3-0 lead.

Eads, a junior, quickly erased that lead with a 3-run home run in the bottom half of the first off Cathedral starting pitcher Sidney Feczko, who pitched into the fifth inning before being relieved by Maddie Liter. Feczko returned to pitch the eighth inning and took the loss.

Shelbyville’s four seniors totaled nine hits and six runs scored in their final home game. The Golden Bears will not host a postseason game this year.

Maulden singled and moved around the bases on three wild pitches to give Shelbyville its first lead of the game, 4-3.

Feczko delivered a two-run double in the fourth and the Irish added another run to take a 6-4 lead.

Shelbyville got a two-run double from Destiney Johnson in the fifth inning. Kali Laycock followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Brenner to re-take the lead, 7-6.

Pogue scored Edwards, who had three hits and scored three runs, in the sixth with an insurance run but Eads hit Liter with a pitch with two outs in the seventh and then allowed an Alyssa Fry single and Ashley Sylvia double to tie the game.

Shelbyville had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh off Liter when Maulden reached on a fielder’s choice and tried to score from first base on a Laycock double to the fence. A perfect relay throw from shortstop Anna Moore to catcher Aubrie Wright beat Maulden to the plate and the game went to extra innings.

Pogue stepped into the pitcher’s circle and worked a scoreless eighth inning then closed out the game in her final home at bat.

Massive surprise by Gigante in $150,000 Caesars at Horseshoe Indianapolis

Gigante and Joe Ramos did not care what the tote board said. The duo may have been the second longest shot in the field of nine Wednesday in the 18th running of the $150,000 Caesars at Horseshoe Indianapolis, but that did not deter their game plan in scoring the title in the Black Type event.

Gigante drew the far outside post when the horses lined up for the one-mile turf event. They were that last in the gate but one of the first ones out. Ramos had a game plan to get out in front quickly, and that is exactly what they did. Dude N Colorado and Irad Ortiz Jr. also left briskly from the center of the track and the two met up just before the first turn, giving Gigante just enough room to cross over to the inside rail and lead the way.

“I knew the five (Dude N Colorado) had a lot of early speed, and I told Nemo (Vallance) that if we broke sharp enough, we were going for the lead,” said Ramos, who is the defending jockey champion from 2023 at Horseshoe Indianapolis in Shelbyville. “I saw the five was taking back a little, so I pushed my horse to go on and get to the lead because I didn’t want to be out around the first turn.”

Down the backstretch, Gigante still had a convincing lead but with a lot of talent behind him, he was going to have to produce a big final half. Around the final turn, everyone was in attack mode, including Wadsworth and Florent Geroux from the back of the pack. They swung wide while Gigante held his ground on the inside with numerous horses in between them.

At the head of the lane, Gigante still had the lead and was not slowing down, rallying home with the threat of Wadsworth coming at him heavily on the outside. The wire arrived just in time for Gigante, who scored the win by a nose over Wadsworth, the favorite of the field. Dude N Colorado finished third.

“I knew the five was on my right in the stretch,” added Ramos, a native of Puerto Rico. “I was not paying attention to the others, but I knew they would be coming. At the quarter pole, I asked him (Gigante), and he responded, and I felt right then we had a good chance for the win.”

Gigante paid $68 for the win. It was the first start of 2023 for the Not This Time three-year-old colt, who was a $120,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland. He is now three for six in his young career for owners Craig Taylor’s  lapetus Racing and Victoria Taylor’s Diamond T Racing. Steve Asmussen trains the colt, who surpassed $250,000 in career earnings.

“This horse got here from Scott (Blasi) from Churchill, so we really didn’t know much about him,” said Nemo Vallance, who has worked for Steve Asmussen as an assistant on and off for a couple of decades. “But Scott always has them prepped and ready to go for races like this so we knew we would be ready. “Plus looking at his lines, he has had some good works. Steve (Asmussen) never gives much advice. He just says go win and good luck.

Horseshoe Indianapolis Handicap

Safeen and jockey Luis Saez made their first appearance in elevated racing action Wednesday, scoring an impressive victory in the 15th running of the $150,000 Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Safeen got away fifth as several horses left for the lead. Around the turn, Safeen on the outside had the most momentum. It took the length of the stretch to get there but Safeen timed the wire just right for the win by a half length over Mohawk Trail. Bling finished third.

Safeen paid $10 for the win. The sophomore daughter of War Front earned her second win in five career outings. Safeen was an $18,000 purchase from Keeneland January All Ages Sale as a two-year-old. Bred by Shadwell Farm LLC, she made her racing debut last September for owners Galvin Fergus and Rebecca Hillen. The start in the Horseshoe Indianapolis was her fifth start at her fifth different track.

Sagamore Sired

Good Forever and jockey Marcelino Pedroza Jr. had good gate speed in the five and one-half furlong sprint and was in contention early before backing off the top spot. With the inside horses under control, Good Forever was being pursued on the outside by Zappinit and jockey Joshua Morales.

Good Forever was strong to the wire for the win in the 10th running of the $100,000 Sagamore Sired by three-quarters of a length.

Zappinit finished second over Spotonjustice for third.

Good Forever was the favorite of the field, paying $5.80 for the win. The Forever d’Oro chestnut was making his second start of 2023, earning his first win of the season, breaking a trio of second place finishes dating back to last fall.

Swifty Sired Fillies

Forever Noted and jockey Eddie Perez were determined entrants in the 10th running of the $100,000 Swifty Sired Fillies.

Forever Noted got the lead early on the inside but was pressured by Girls Are Tuffer and Malcolm Franklin with Imagine the Moon and DeShawn Parker also hanging close.

In the stretch, Forever Noted moved to the outside and tangled once again with Girls Are Tuffer and Imagine the Moon. Once they passed the duo in mid-stretch, they were in command of the race. Several late closers began to come into the picture, including Wildcatjustice and Fernando De La Cruz but Forever Noted was well in hand at the wire, winning by one and one-quarter lengths.

Forever Noted paid $23.20 for the win. It was only the third career start for the daughter of Forever d’Oro. She catapulted her earnings for owner Marion Gorham to more than $86,000 with the win.

HHC championship secured under the Greenfield-Central lights

GREENFIELD – Addie Stieneker blasted three home runs and Cheyenne Eads struck out 11 to lead Shelbyville to an 11-1 victory Monday night at Greenfield-Central.

The win improved Shelbyville to 16-7 this season and closed out its Hoosier Heritage Conference record at 6-1 to claim no worse than a share of its second-straight conference title.

“We talk about our goals every year. We want to win the conference. We want to win the sectional and we usually have a goal of winning 20 games,” said Shelbyville head coach Mark Hensley. “We will have to win a few in the sectional to get to (20) because we are a few games short this year (due to rainouts and scheduling issues).

“Being able to go through our conference with one loss is doing something. I don’t care what the records are, anybody can beat anybody on any given night so any time you can get a win, especially one that is kind of surprising like this. I was expecting this to be a 4-3 type of game the way they hit.”

Prior to Monday’s game, six of the eight teams in the HHC had double-digit wins and winning records. Three are ranked in the top 15 in the most recent state coaches poll. Shelbyville is not ranked despite having seven losses by a combined 10 runs and six of those losses to state-ranked opponents.

Stieneker (photo) jump-started Shelbyville Monday just after the 8 p.m. first pitch with a 2-run home run that staked Eads to an early 3-0 lead. The junior pitcher took care of the Cougars from there, allowing just three hits and two walks. She ended the final four innings with strikeouts.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t find a way to scratch a run or two …I think four or five of her losses are by one run,” said Hensley. “She has thrown most of the huge games for us. She comes ready to play every single day. You don’t have to worry about her.”

Stieneker made it easy on Eads Monday with a stunning performance against the Cougars (17-7, 3-3 HHC) and starting pitcher Madysen Herbert. Already up 4-1, Stieneker belted a solo home run in the third inning and then finished off a 6-run fourth inning with a grand slam for a 7-RBI performance.

“It was like Addie Stieneker vs. Greenfield tonight,” said Hensley. “She came up the second time and had a 3-0 count and I told her if she liked it she could take a hack at it. She shook her head no like she wasn’t going to swing. Then she hit it out.

“Third time she came up with the bases loaded so they couldn’t pitch around her. I wasn’t expecting her to hit it out but I knew she would hit it hard somewhere. Obviously the ball right now must look like a beach ball. Those were three balls she absolutely laced.”

Stieneker now has seven home runs this season.

The Golden Bears go for win No. 17 today at Carmel (5-14).

Free throw procedures and foul administration amended in 2023-24 high school basketball rules changes

Beginning next year, high school basketball teams will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus.” This change to Rule 4-8-1 eliminates the one-and-one scenario and sets new foul limits each quarter for awarding the bonus free throw.

Rules changes were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its annual meeting April 24-26 in Indianapolis. The recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

In addition to awarding two foul shots for all common fouls, teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five fouls in each quarter and team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. Previously, teams were awarded the one-and-one bonus when their opponents committed seven fouls in a half and two foul shots when 10 fouls were committed each half.

“The rules committee studied data that showed higher injury rates on rebounding situations and saw this as an opportunity to reduce opportunities for rough play during rebounds,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS Director of Sports and liaison to the Basketball Rules Committee. “Additionally, resetting the fouls each quarter will improve game flow and allow teams to adjust their play by not carrying foul totals to quarters two and four.”

The throw-in procedure for front-court violations was simplified in Rules 7-5-2 through 7-5-5. When the ball is in team control in the offensive team’s frontcourt and the defensive team commits a violation, a common foul prior to the bonus, or the ball becomes dead, the corresponding throw-in by the offensive team will be at one of four designated spots determined by where the infraction took place. The designated spots are either the nearest 28-foot mark along each sideline or the nearest spot 3 feet outside the lane line on the end line. The one exception is when the defensive team causes a ball to be out of bounds, the throw-in shall be the spot where the ball went out of bounds.

Throw-in administration was also addressed in a change to Rule 7-6-6. When an official administers a throw-in to the wrong team, the error can be fixed before the first dead ball after the ball becomes live unless there has been a change in possession.

Other approved rules changes include:

  • Rule 2-1-3 establishes the official placement of a shot clock operator at the scorer’s table for those states utilizing the shot clock.
  • Rule 3-4-5 clarifies that multiple styles of uniform bottoms may be worn by teammates, but they must all be like-colored and adhere to uniform rules outlined in Rule 3-6-2 regarding logos and trademarks.
  • Rule 3-5-6 addresses undershirts and allows teams to wear a single solid color or solid black for visiting teams with dark jerseys. This provides an opportunity for schools with hard-to-find colors to have all players wear a black undershirt.
  • Rule 9-3-3 was amended to allow a player to step out of bounds and return to the court if the player gains no advantage. A player is penalized only if, after returning inbounds, the player is the first to touch the ball or avoids a violation.

A complete listing of the basketball rules changes will be available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org. Click on “Activities & Sports” at the top of the home page and select “Basketball.”

According to the 2021-22 NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, basketball is the third-most popular high school sport for boys with 521,616 participants in 18,428 schools nationwide. It is the fourth-most popular girls sport with 370,466 participants in 17,901 schools.

Class 4A, No. 6 Pendleton Heights slips by Shelbyville in invitational championship game

Shelbyville boys volleyball prepares for first sectional

Shelbyville High School boys volleyball coach Vince Bradburn reflects on the program’s inaugural year with a sense of satisfaction and appreciation.

“I cannot say enough good things about our players and the effort they gave this season,” said Bradburn, the program’s first varsity coach. “The guys decided they wanted this to be more than a ‘rec’ league and worked all year with that idea in mind. They wanted to represent Shelbyville to the best of their abilities.”

The first-year contingent spent this week preparing for the program’s sectional tournament which will held Saturday at Southport High School.

The Golden Bears, 5-6 this season, will face the host school in the opening contest of the four-team event. Southport currently has a record of 19-10 and is No. 8 in the state rankings. Franklin Central (21-9) and Indianapolis Lutheran (10-5) will compete in the opposite bracket.

Boys volleyball is classified by the Indiana High School Athletic Association as an “emerging sport,” as opposed to a “fully sanctioned” sport. Seventy-five of the IHSAA’s 407 member institutions fielded boys volleyball teams for the 2022-23 school year.

Sixty eight schools will participate in this year’s post season tournament.

The Shelbyville team opened the season against veteran program in Heritage Christian with a home match and quickly found itself behind 6-0 in the opening set.

“I called a quick timeout,” said Bradburn. “We settled down and even though we lost in three sets, became more competitive.”

Shelbyville placed runner-up in an invitational tournament at Blue River Valley three weeks later. The Bears won their pool play round by recording victories over Purdue Polytechnic and Lawrence North before losing a rematch in the championship encounter against Heritage Christian.

“You could see definite improvement in that short time when we played Heritage Christian again,” stated Bradburn.

In addition to Heritage Christian, the Bears faced off against tradition-rich boys volleyball programs Madison and Franklin.

“Franklin invited us to play on an evening when they celebrated their program’s 20th anniversary,” said Bradburn. “They recognized members of their first team from 2003 that night. I think seeing the importance of that tradition inspired our guys. They understood that they could be laying that foundation here.”

Bradburn was introduced to volleyball while in college at Indiana State.

“There were outdoor volleyball courts right by my dorm,” said Bradburn.

He became involved with the women’s program, assisting in various ways such as line judging.

“The coach took me under his wing and taught me about the sport,” said Bradburn. “My interest and love for it continued to develop.”

Bradburn cites Shelbyville senior Jackson Parker for his exceptional leadership this season.

“Jackson has worked hard to learn the game and leads by example. He is an excellent athlete and very team-oriented,” said Bradburn.

Junior Jayion Grice came to the program with some club volleyball experience.

“Jayion was an outside hitter for us and was instrumental to our improvement during the season”, said Bradburn.

Freshman Diego Hernandez was the team’s setter, however Bradburn declared that, “He did not play like a freshman. He was very consistent all year.”

Bradburn was pleased that the program was able to schedule a junior varsity contest this season as well: “Players put in a great deal of time practicing so it was nice to get a JV game scheduled so more people had an opportunity to play more.”

This first Golden Bear boys volleyball squad was senior laden with eight seniors (photo) – Parker, Shiv Patel, Brayden Jones, Al Hernandez, Christian Haas, Jack Johnson, Carson Linville and Riley Fortune -- on the 14-person roster.

Nathaniel Juniper served as assistant coach this season.

“We truly appreciate the community making us feel welcome and supporting us during this first year,” said Bradburn. “We look forward to the challenge this weekend at the Southport sectional.”

“We are excited to welcome Pacers Sports & Entertainment to Noblesville along with the players, coaches and staff of the G League team,” Mayor Chris Jensen said. “The Pacers are an iconic brand with deep roots in central Indiana. Partnering with such an impactful organization opens numerous opportunities for our community and drives forward our efforts for a larger sports and entertainment district with enhanced partnerships.”

The new arena is anticipated to open during the 2024-2025 season, and the team would play at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in the interim. City and team officials are working through due diligence steps with local partners and plan to build the arena at Finch Creek Park near the Mojo Up Sports Complex, which generates nearly one million visits per year.

The city expects to draw 65,000 fans annually to Noblesville and Finch Creek just for games, which is already the second most visited area in Hamilton County for sports visitors.

“We are working with the Pacers and other partners on programming options for the arena on days it is not used by the Pacers. The facility would be available for events like IHSAA tournaments and competitions, concerts, conferences, corporate events and graduations,” Jensen said. “Further steps are being taken to finalize development and programming partners, which may also incorporate additional project features and recreational amenities.”

The franchise will remain the Mad Ants through the 2023-2024 season. A new mascot will be unveiled prior to the 2024-2025 season and Mad Ants, a name with a special tie to Fort Wayne, will be retired.

“The G League is world-class basketball, and PS&E is proud to bring that to Noblesville as we strengthen our basketball operations and enhance player development in one of the state’s most vibrant and growing communities,” Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Rick Fuson said. “We are excited about the way this partnership fits into the bold vision for economic development Mayor Jensen has laid out, and we can’t wait to continue growing our NBA and G League fan base right here in Hamilton County.”

At the Noblesville Common Council meeting today, a 10-year partnership agreement between the City of Noblesville and Pacers Sports & Entertainment will be presented. The agreement includes $5 million in cash investment from PS&E, which will also lead an effort to secure another $5 million in naming rights and signage over those 10 years, as well as $36.5 million from the city in building the arena.

“We welcome the new partnership with the Pacers,” said Noblesville Common Council President Aaron Smith. “The administration and council have made proactive, smart investments to assist with the financing of this partnership. We are excited to continue the strategic growth on the east side of our city and provide a new attraction for our residents and guests.”

Featuring 30 teams — 28 with one-to-one affiliations with NBA franchises — the G League offers elite professional basketball at an affordable price in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

“Fifty-four percent of NBA players have G League experience. Noblesville will compete in 27 media markets in 21 other states, plus Mexico and Canada,” Jensen said. “Noblesville also has a proud history of being a basketball community, including 1998 Mr. Basketball Tom Coverdale and the 2022 Millers Girls Basketball State Champions. Adding our partnership with the Pacers only cements us as a destination for basketball and youth sports.”

Board of Directors tables four-class proposal

During its annual review of the by-laws Monday, the Board of Directors of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. tabled a proposal that changes the way schools are classified in the four-class sports.

The board, led by President Chris Conley of Delta High School and Vice President Kye Denney of Wes-Del High School, approved 12 proposals, three failed to receive enough support, and several others were tabled during the meeting in Indianapolis.

All proposals are considered in the order that the rule appears within the current by-laws. The Board of Directors has four options on each proposal: affirm, deny, table or amend a rule. A simple majority is necessary to act on any measure and all approved measures become effective immediately unless otherwise noted.

After lengthy conversation, the board opted to table the proposal for further study which would begin classifying schools in the four-class sports of baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball using fix enrollment figures. Since 1997-98, the rule has required equally distributing schools among the four classes.

The proposal, which will now be taken up at the June 22 Executive Committee meeting, was submitted by Commissioner Paul Neidig on behalf of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (IIAAA). It calls for the following breaks:

  • Class 4A – 1,400 enrollment and up
  • Class 3A – 600-1,399 enrollment
  • Class 2A – 325-599 enrollment
  • Class A – 324 enrollment and down

Due to the tabling of the four-class proposal, the other proposals affecting the Tournament Success Factor were subsequently tabled as well.

In other items:

  • The board unanimously approved (17-0) of reducing the necessary number of schools participating in an Emerging Sport (currently girls wrestling and boys volleyball) from 150 to 100 before that sport would become officially sponsored and a state tournament implemented. The minimum of 40 schools per district was also struck from the rule.
  • The proposal that required schools to notify the Association of their intention to play up one or more classes for the next reclassification cycle with a deadline of September 1 was approved 18-0.
  • An amendment to Rule 9-14 that reduces the number of practices required after missing consecutive days was approved 18-0. Students missing 8-14 consecutive days will now need two practices (previously four) while those missing more than 14 consecutive days will now need three practices (previously six).
  • Clarifying language to Rule 14-8 that high school students with a provisional officiating license may officiate any contests other than those at the high school level (grades 9-12) was approved 18-0.
  • An amendment to Rule 14-9 that extends the deadline to renew an officiating license from May 31 to June 30 was approved 18-0.
  • A proposal from the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association requesting the first authorized practice date for girls tennis in the spring did not pass (1-17).
  • Amendments to Rules 50-1 and 50-1.2 (Pre-Participation Practice) that reduced the number of practices required both passed unanimously (18-0).
  • Two proposals from Austin Principal Dr. Ryan Herald that would reduce the maximum number of games that a baseball and softball team may play both failed to receive any support.
  • The elections of next year’s leadership of the Board and Executive Committee were also held. Stacy Adams of Valparaiso High School was voted president of the 2023-24 Board of Directors and Chad Gilbert of Charlestown High School was elected vice president. Chris Conley of Delta High School was named chairman of the 2023-24 Executive Committee and Tom Black of East Central High School was confirmed as vice chairman.
