Shelbyville senior excited for opportunity to build men's soccer program at IUPUC

Being a college athlete had been in the back of Zavier Leon’s mind ever since he arrived as a freshman in the Shelbyville boys soccer program.

“Obviously it’s every kid’s dream when they play high school sports to be an athlete in college,” said Leon. “It kind of came around my junior year that I needed to ramp something up to become a college athlete.”

Now, just over a month away from graduation, Leon never would have dreamed he would have the opportunity to play college soccer with his best friend and Golden Bears soccer teammate Al Hernandez.

On Wednesday, Leon made his commitment official to join the inaugural men’s soccer program at Indiana University Purdue University Columbus.

“To be one of the first people to step on the field and make a name for the team and control your own destiny,” said Leon when asked why he chose IUPUC. “This is what I wanted. I want to make sure we build a good stepping stone for the next couple of years and hopefully this becomes a powerful school. I am glad to be one of the first kids to say I played for this school.”

Leon will join fellow Golden Bears Al Hernandez and Christian Haas as inaugural members of the Crimson Pride program, led by head coach Tyler Joy-Brandon.

“He is very set on how to make this program as successful as possible,” said Leon of the IUPUC coach. “I like that mentality. I want to be the best. I want to be the person that kids look up to.”

Leon was a versatile member of the Shelbyville soccer program. He accepted a new defensive role in 2022 that will likely carry into his first season at IUPUC.

“He took on a huge leadership role in the back,” said Shelbyville boys soccer coach Ben Purvis. “He is not afraid to challenge his coaches if he sees something on the field that he thinks needs to be adjusted and that is good for us because we are not always there, especially not being teachers in the school system.”

Leon believes he is up to the challenge of continuing his defensive role at the next level.

“My main role we are looking at now is defense – center back or outside back,” he said. “It’s a brand new position to me. I only started there last year so it’s something I will have to learn at.”

IUPUC, located in Columbus, Indiana, is completing its first year with an athletic program. Men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball will be added this fall. The athletic department recently received word it will become a full member of the NAIA River States Conference which means it is eligible for postseason competition starting with the 2023-2024 school year.

“The fact that we are able to take everything that he has worked toward over the past few years and turn that into an opportunity to play at the next level and get to play with some of his teammates is, I think, a cool experience these guys are going to have.”

Leon, the son of Hector Leon and Amy Parker (photo), will major in Business and Accounting at IUPUC.

The Mr. Basketball result means Burton will wear the No. 1 jersey for the Indiana All-Stars in their annual series with Kentucky. The Mr. Basketball award goes to the top boys’ basketball senior in the state.

The Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball awards are part of the IndyStar Indiana All-Star program that dates to 1939. The Miss Basketball award, along with the girls' All-Stars, was added to the All-Star program in 1976.

The complete 2023 boys' All-Star team was announced on April 4. The complete 2023 girls' All-Star team was announced on March 14. Laila Hull of Zionsville previously was announced as Miss Basketball for 2023.

Burton earned the boys' top honor after being named on 171 ballots submitted to Broughton in balloting that ran from March 14 through March 29. Xavier Booker of Cathedral was runner-up with 20 votes. Zane Doughty of Ben Davis and Joey Hart of Linton-Stockton each received six votes. Myles Colvin was fifth with five votes followed by Mason Jones of Valparaiso with three votes. In total, 16 players received at least one Mr. Basketball vote.

A Notre Dame recruit, Burton averaged a state-best 30.3 points as well as 5.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.6 steals while leading Penn to a 28-2 season that included Northern Indiana Conference, Elkhart Sectional and Michigan City Regional championships. He converted 58.2% on field goals (348 of 598), including 42.5% on 3-point attempts (65 of 153) for the Kingsmen. He also sank 87.1% on free throws (148 of 170).

For his career, Burton totaled a school- and St. Joseph County-record 2,273 points as well as 533 rebounds, 512 assists and 329 steals while Penn amassed an aggregate record of 74-31 over his four seasons (10-14, 12-12, 24-3 and 28-2). He also holds the school record for points in a season (909 as a senior) and produced a triple-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in this year's sectional opener against Elkhart on Feb. 28.

Burton is the first boys' player and the eighth overall player from Penn to be named an Indiana All-Star. Those chosen as All-Stars previously from Penn, all girls, are Jessica Reiter (2000), Lily Svete (2009), Alex Morton (2012), Taylor Lutz (2013), Caroline Buhr (2014), Camryn Buhr (2016) and Kaitlyn Costner (2021). Also, Penn's Kristi Ulrich is the head coach of the 2023 girls' All-Stars.

In going to Notre Dame, Burton joins Chris Thomas of Pike (2003) and Luke Zeller of Washington (2005) as Mr. Basketball honorees to join the Irish program. Burton, Thomas and Zeller are among 24 Indiana All-Stars to play for the ND men's basketball program.

Burton also is the third Mr. Basketball winner from St. Joseph County. He follows John Coalmon of South Bend Central in 1957 and David Magley of South Bend LaSalle in 1978. Burton also becomes the third Mr. Basketball recipient coached by Al Rhodes. The Penn mentor also guided 1985 winner Jeff Grose and 1996 winner Kevin Ault while he was the coach at Warsaw.

While in high school, Burton has been recognized as 2021 IBCA Large School All-State, 2022 IBCA Underclass Supreme 15, 2022 AP third-team All-State, 2023 IBCA Senior Supreme 15 and 2023 AP first-team All-State. Longshot winner Tay scores victory in season opener at Horseshoe Indianapolis

There is something special about winning the first race of meet. It sets the tone for the season. That is just what Tay did for the Scott Mullins Stable Tuesday at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Starting from the outside post six, Tay and jockey Alberto Burgos (photo) were in contention early on the outside of the five and one-half furlong event. Sacred Sky and Joe Ramos held down the early lead on the inside but around the final turn, Tay and veteran racehorse Double Tuff with Rodney Prescott moved as a team toward the leaders.

At the head of the stretch, those two began to put some distance between themselves and the remainder of the field. Midway through the stretch, Tay took over and was hand ridden to the wire for the three and three-quarter length win as the longest shot on the board.

Double Tuff was second over Sakic and Malcolm Franklin, who rallied up late for third.

“We gave him (Tay) some time off and he’s been training here all winter,” said Mullins. “This horse never left the state. He was born right down the road at our Sugar Creek Farm. It is a great feeling to win the first race. And I could not do any of this without Cynthia (Gastel). She works so hard for our stable.”

Tay paid $65.40 for the win. The four-year-old son of Deputy Storm was making his first start of 2023. It was his second career win in eight starts over the past two years. Unraced at two, Tay now has more than $42,000 on his card for the Mullins Stable, who also owns him.

It also marked a first for newcomer Burgos, who made his racing debut in the event.

“This is my first race here and it’s a great feeling to win this race,” said Burgos, a native of Puerto Rico. “I worked this horse a few times over the winter. He has been working well. I am very happy to be here and to get a win in my first race.”

Burgos comes in from riding at Presque Isle Downs last year. He is currently in his fifth year as a jockey and had six wins for the 2023 season to his credit prior to his win at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Overall, he has 104 wins and more than $2 millions in earnings.

Another horse adding to his bankroll was Ahardhabittobreak and Francisco Quintero, who won the first Quarter Horse race of the meet. The Tony Cunningham trained Indiana bred gelding was a winner by a neck over Heza Royal Wagon and Cesar Esqueda. I Beacha and Fernando Morin finished third.

Ahardhabittobreak, a three-year-old son of Habits Secret earned his first career win in his sixth career start. He is owned by Teresa and Mike Gross.

Wagering for the 10-race card topped $2.85 million, nearly $1 million ahead of last year’ season opener for handle.

Class 4A, No. 9 Columbus North capitalizes at right time to defeat 4A No. 15 Shelbyville

Columbus North capitalized where Shelbyville failed.

Class 4A, No. 9 Columbus North pushed a run across in the top of the seventh inning and Maddi Rutan struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning to defeat 4A No. 15 Shelbyville, 1-0, Thursday.

The Golden Bears missed an opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Hailey Pogue greeted Rutan, who just took over in the pitcher’s circle, with a standup triple.

The Eastern Kentucky recruit settled in and induced two infield fly ball outs around a strikeout to keep the game scoreless going to the seventh.

With two outs in the seventh, Payton Morris singled, stole second base and scored on Kaylee Cowan’s double for the only run in the contest.

Cheyenne Eads took the loss despite allowing just four hits and striking out five in seven innings.

Shelbyville (2-2) has lost three of its last four meetings with the Bull Dogs (2-0-1), who will host the Sectional 14 tournament in late May.

The Golden Bears played Thursday without star shortstop Kylee Edwards, who missed the game with an illness. The Mississippi State-bound infielder is hitting .538 early this season with three home runs.

“I think this is the first one,” said Shelbyville head coach Mark Hensley when asked how many games he has coached without Edwards in the lineup. “I don’t think she has missed any games as far as I remember. I remember one game one time where we were up a whole bunch and I took her out in the fifth inning. She got so mad at me and wouldn’t talk to me for about two days. From then on, I decided to just let her stay in every single game no matter what.

“She has been sick all week and can’t seem to shake it. She felt like she could play today but her health is more important than a game the first week of April.”

Columbus North debuted a new look against Shelbyville, who has battled Rutan for the last two seasons. Morris, a heralded freshman, made her first start in the pitching circle.

She limited the Golden Bears to three hits, walked two and hit a batter and benefitted from a pair of double plays turned by her defense.

With Edwards on track to graduate as well as Pogue and starting outfielders Abby Brenner and Riley Maulden, Hensley took a look Thursday at players that will fill out the 2024 roster. The final six players in the batting lineup were sophomores and freshmen.

“I would imagine those six players, I’m sure they’ve seen some pretty good pitching in travel ball but it’s been awhile since they’ve seen somebody that looked like (Rutan), who was throwing hard today,” said Hensley. “That is part of it too. I was pleased with our approach at the plate. I know we struck out some with those girls at the bottom part of the lineup, but their approaches were good. We took some good swings at her. They weren’t chasing terrible pitches.”

Shelbyville faces another Sectional 14 opponent today when it hosts East Central (1-2) at 5:30 p.m.

The Golden Bears open their Hoosier Heritage Conference schedule Saturday morning when New Castle (0-3) visits for a 10 a.m. scheduled first pitch.

Shelbyville didn't have to look far to find its new head football coach

Scott Fitzgerald is more than just a little familiar with the sideline at McKeand Stadium.

Fitzgerald served several seasons as the Golden Bears offensive coordinator for then-head coach Pat Parks. Now, he returns as the program's head coach with the approval of the Shelbyville Central Schools Board at a special meeting held Wednesday evening.

Fitzgerald fills the vacancy left by Brian Glesing. Glesing accepted the head football position at Salem after two years in Shelbyville and a 2-15 record.

Since departing the high school program following the 2017 season Fitzgerald has worked with the youngsters growing up in the Shelbyville elementary and middle school grades, including his own sons. The Shelbyville Middle School teacher also worked as a wide receivers coach for his alma mater, Franklin College.

Fitzgerald expressed his thanks to Superintendent Dr. Matt Vance, the school board, SHS Athletic Director Jenny Demuth-Hensley and Principal Amy Dawson.

He spoke with GIANT fm Sports and The Shelby County Post Wednesday night about accepting the job, the program's current status and some familiar faces that will join him coaching the Golden Bears.

Dr. Matt Vance talked about the process that ended with the hiring of Fitzgerald.

Shelbyville's Badgley continues recovery following serious accident

Damon Badgley was working out in the Golden Bear weight room the Monday after Shelbyville’s two-point-loss to Whiteland in the semifinals of this year’s Columbus North sectional basketball tournament. The Shelbyville sophomore was heartened by his inaugural varsity season and the team’s consistent improvement throughout the year.

He was intent on wasting no time in preparing for his junior season.

Badgley’s early postseason workout plans were curtailed two days later, on March 8, when he was involved in a traumatic auto accident while driving to school on State road 44.

“A car passing a vehicle from the opposite direction forced me off the road and my truck rolled over a few times,” related Badgley. “The truck was demolished, but I was able to get out and walk. Two people stopped to help me but we knew it was bad. You could see the bone through a hole in my arm. The responders got there very fast but I knew I had severe injuries.”

The wreck left Badgley with a badly broken left elbow. He was immediately transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for evaluation and treatment. Tests revealed minor pelvic and leg fractures but significant damage to the elbow. Later that day, doctors stitched back and reconnected muscles and tendons in the arm.

“The doctors’ main concern was that the accident severed the muscles that control mobility in the wrist and they had to reattach those,” said Damon’s father, Gary. “They would have to graft a muscle from another part of his body if the reattachment was unsuccessful.”

Fortunately, Damon did not suffer any concussion or head injuries. The major concern was the elbow.

Early results of the surgery were encouraging. He was quickly able to move his wrist and fingers so there would be no need for additional surgery. He has continued to make steady progress and recently began physical therapy.

Badgley will continue therapy sessions two to three times per week for the next few weeks.

“The physical therapy will work on my range of motion,” he said. “Right now, the arm is stiff so I need to work on extending and improving my range of motion.”

“Basketball notwithstanding, Damon is an exceptional young man,” stated Shelbyville head coach John Hartnett Jr. “Our primary concern is to get him healthy. He is someone who cares about others and demonstrates that.  A serious accident like this affects family, friends, coaches, teachers and teammates. We are very pleased that he is recovering so well.”

Badgley had to contend with a couple of other injuries over the course of the past year as well. He hyperextended his right knee on the final day of 2022 summer practice and had to wear a brace for three weeks. He also chipped a bone in his left hand and played with some minor pain for the last month of the basketball season.

He enjoyed a strong sophomore season for the Golden Bears, starting numerous games and seeing extensive playing time. He was the team’s third-leading scorer averaging 8.5 points per game and connected on 27 3-point field goals. He hit a 3-point shot with eight seconds remaining to secure a Shelbyville victory at Pendleton Heights and nailed another critical trey in overtime versus East Central in the opening sectional contest to give Shelbyville a lead they would not relinquish.

“Damon developed into one of our primary players and became one of our main scorers,” said Hartnett. “He also became an important rebounder for us. He is very committed to basketball and that paid dividends this year. He showed remarkable growth and improvement throughout the year. We are very excited about his basketball future.”

Badgley is quick to thank his coaches and teammates for being very supportive during this ordeal.

“Everyone got in contact with me and my family from the day of the accident on,” said Badgley. “The basketball coaching staff always goes above and beyond to make us a better team and they did the same for me after the accident. Coach Hartnett has been in touch since this happened. He sent me a gift basket from the team while I was still in the hospital and is always checking on my recovery. My teammates have been there for me as well. I am so very thankful for all of them.”

Nearly one month after the accident, Badgley understands that he still has significant healing to do: both physically and emotionally.

“I get stronger every day, but I want to make sure I recover completely,” said Damon. “This whole thing really made me pause and realize how fortunate I am to have a great family and people around me who truly care.”

He has his sights set on resuming practicing and working out within a month, always of course following medical advice and direction. “Playing basketball is something I have loved doing since I was very young,” he said. “I look forward to being back at it more determined than ever very soon.”

Evansville to host 2024 Wrestling State Finals

The Indiana High School Athletic Association is pleased to announce the 86th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Finals will be contested at the Ford Center in Evansville.

This will be the first time the city of Evansville has hosted an IHSAA State Finals event in any sport.

The regularly scheduled dates of next year’s state finals are February 16-17, 2024. Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, which has hosted the state finals every year since it opened in 2000, will be home to the 2024 NBA All-Star Game on the same weekend.

The Ford Center, which has an approximate capacity of 11,000, is in downtown Evansville and has served as host of the Evansville Wrestling Semistate for 11 of the last 12 years since opening in 2011.

“We’re extremely pleased and grateful to the city of Evansville for their willingness to host the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals - one of our premier events every year,” said IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig. “Evansville has an impeccable reputation for hosting amateur athletic competitions and we are very confident this will be a great and memorable experience for everyone who attends. Evansville stands ready for this opportunity to host this event and share their hospitality with the rest of the state.”

The IHSAA reached out to other venues in the state with the necessarily specific availability, capacity, infrastructure, and willingness to host this event and the Ford Center was found to be the most compatible.

“We are elated that Evansville has been selected to host the 2024 IHSAA State Wrestling tournament,” said Lloyd Winnecke, Mayor of Evansville. “We eagerly await the opportunity to roll out the red carpet for student athletes and spectators. The remarkable Ford Center will serve as a dynamic host venue, and we are confident that visitors will enjoy our thriving downtown, and all the amenities and hospitality our great city has to offer.”

McDuffey recognized with Golden Bear honor

On a Saturday night in March of 1986, Doug McDuffey walked into Shelbyville High School as a member of the Golden Bears’ Final Four basketball team with his IHSAA state finalist basketball medallion in hand.

Thursday, almost 37 years to the day later, McDuffey (photo, left) was at SHS again, this time to become the second recipient of “The Hardworking Golden Bear Award,” an honor recently created to acknowledge Shelbyville High School alumni who positively promote Shelbyville Central Schools and consistently work for the betterment of the community.

Shelbyville Central Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Vance made the presentation in the SHS Golden Bear Room citing McDuffey’s “genuine dedication and commitment.”

“Doug is an excellent example of a successful and generous Shelbyville alumnus who works hard every day to have a positive influence,” said Andy Hensley (photo, right), Shelbyville Central Schools Director of Student Services. “He is a fine representative of this award.”

McDuffey has contributed his efforts to numerous local endeavors including the Boys and Girls Club, The Knights of Columbus and Blue Bear Golf Club. He also has dedicated time to working with youth basketball and football programs.

McDuffey, who grew up on Shelbyville’s southwest side, recalls a childhood filled with activity and fun.

“I had tremendous friends who all helped each other,” stated McDuffey. “We were fortunate to have a strong group that wanted to achieve as we got older. I think we all shared the goals of working hard to do well.”

McDuffey, a 1986 SHS graduate, also played on the 10-1 South Central Conference football championship team in 1984. He worked for O’Neal Steel for 29 years and is currently employed by Bellman Trucking in Indianapolis. He has been a professional driver for 35 years and holds CDL and Hazardous Materials Licenses. He currently serves as the assistant Golden Bears boys golf coach.

Doug and Deborah, his wife of 22 years, are the parents of DaMiah, n SHS senior, and DeMiles, a junior, as well as newly-adopted children Kristopher, Kameron and Kamyah.

“I had very good parents and there were always special people around to guide me, to keep me doing the right thing,” said McDuffey. “Great mentors. I always appreciated that. They gave me a sense of value and that is very important. I feel that I should give back and be helpful to others whenever I can.”
